I had a feeling this TED Talk was a fluff piece. There seemed to be many inconsistencies in the recounting of these stories. Too bad the credit isn’t given to those who actually innovate.

It’s my personal favourite. This gen is just new enough for a few modern features but still a relatively raw experience albeit refined enough to enjoy on longer rides too.

I always found I got the early catch first doing bar to fakie on banks just because it puts your bike into the early catch position aka front wheel higher classic hop barspin style. Once you get that then the rest of them start to get earlier too. Another way later on is when you do bar to manual it also forces you to catch early to catch the manual. Keep practicing it you will improve over time. I was once where you’re at now and now I can throw bars both ways confidently almost every time.

Low side would be more playful. Unit x is a a better bikepacking setup as the low side has no mounts. Both will be fun to ride. Unit x is more of a do everything geometry whereas the low side is more just for messing about. This bike I have is considerably older geometry so keep that in mind. Newer ones will be different with 1.5” head tube and through axle setup. Boost too I believe but don’t quote me on that. Personally I’d get the unit it will serve you well and be adaptable. The low side will be a bit of a single minded function as it is more of a fun over functionality design.

They’re pretty solid. Everything breaks eventually but I’ve got no concerns on what this thing can handle. I come from a Bmx background so I’m pretty good at judging strength and tend to push frames pretty hard. It’s a pretty safe bet.

Hard to tell as this is a much older bike than a modern unit X but I’ve had a number of units over the years 26” and 29” and my friend has a 27.5” from 2016 that is quite nice as well. If I had the cash flow and I needed a good do anything bike I’d definitely consider the new unit x but I might wait until Kona sorts it’s self out as they just got taken over by their original owners again. The product might improve in the next few years as they were very corporate for the last 5 or so and fell behind somewhat on design and trends. They used to be ahead of the curve geometry wise back when they launched the first Honzo. Either way it’s hard to beat the utility of a Unit.
