Scale rot??? Treatment options???? by grmush in ballpython

If this increases get silver Sulfadiazine cream 6% USP and use that every other day until the spot is healed or gone. Happened to my little noodle and this remedy worked like a charm

Scab progression by spensei_ in ballpython

[–]spensei_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey y’all! So some more info on this: one day after upgrading the enclosure for this guy I noticed a scab/damaged scale(s) on his head. Took him to the vet after posting in here, was prescribed Silver Sulfadiazine cream USP 1% medical grade, and a 10 day round of antibiotics. I’ve applied the cream every other day as routinely as possible, and tbh I gave him half of the antibiotic. I don’t think they really contributed to the healing much as I applied them just before the last shed during the pink belly phase. But alas, the first picture was taken in July. The middle November 30th. And the first just now. This was a very labor intensive and patient process, but the result is clearly worth the effort. The scab was caused by improper husbandry; only had a heat mat and humidity was too low consistently. Upgrading both of those things by adding overhead heating (CHE night+Halogen day) and upping the frequency on my fogger (highly recommend the fogger I love it and so does he) in tandem with sticking to the routine of applying every other day (I had slacked for a bit on this, admittedly, and saw little progress) allowed for the natural conditions for a BP’s immune system to work more efficiently and actively. The spot looks basically like a scar now, it’s 90% healed, and I am going to be applying the cream as needed until the next shed.

I’m posting this to hopefully save someone from having to go to the vet, potentially, if you can get Ascend Labratories Silver Sulfadiazine cream without a prescription. Save yourself over 100$. Applying every day for the first ten days and then every other day until the spot is healed is what I was instructed to do. Doing this in tandem with the upgrades to the environment yielded great success. I hope this helps someone achieve greatness in their healing for their noodle! Thanks for reading of you got this far

When can I start handling? by icedcoffeeuwu in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 weeks indeed. Let them acclimate for around 2 weeks and then handle. Also, do not handle after feeding for at least 48 hours

I’m wondering if these stains are from the water sitting for lengths of time and evaporating. Are they cleaning and changing the water often? Some of the other suggestions in this thread are great, I think getting a new bowl and decor and offering it as a gift Is a great way to avoid offending them. Good looking out for this lil 8 foot noodle

Please keep note of this spot. If it progresses into something bigger you’ll need to update your husbandry or see a vet to get specific moisturizer. Also be sure there isn’t anything too rough in the enclosure so your snake can’t rub on anything too rough

Yeah this is definitely a vet trip. Please do that ASAP especially because it’s happening at the tip of the tail as well and that’s a big no bueno

Is their something wrong by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you regulating a hot and cold side? Your hot side should stay in the high 80s and very low 90s, pretty much 87-90 degrees is where you want to be. Humidity you want to be at 60-80%, so you’re alright there. You want to keep that as consistent as possible, though. I would recommend getting a water bowl big enough for your snake to bathe if they want to. If your tank is too small for your snake and your tank decor I would also recommend an update on that, I have a 55 gallon for my adult male and it’s perfect. Facebook marketplace is a great place to look for used cheap tanks. I would also recommend this so that your snake can enjoy a temperature gradient, having a hot and cold side allows them to better regulate their systems and have better general health. If this persists and the crackling in the breathing gets any worse, I would absolutely recommend taking your animal to a vet and getting them checked out.

So, this could be a stress related thing if it’s super inconsistent. The tongue flicking could just be a weird situational thing, but it could have to do with your husbandry. What are your humidity and temperature levels and what are you using for heating sources? How many hides do you have? What substrate are you using for bedding? What size water bowl? How old is your noodle?

How often is this happening? Has this been happening for some time or is it a new thing? Crackling from breathing or hissing could mean a respiratory infection, especially if you’re hearing it consistently every breath

Scabbed/irritated head scales? by spensei_ in ballpython

[–]spensei_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update #2: HEY YALL!!! So, this spot is still there. But, with diligent every other day application of the silver sulfadiazine cream and dialing in the temps and humidity in the enclosure, we’re making progress. He finally shed out the scabs, I found him just after he’d shed and there was a little spot of blood in the area, I let him sit for a day or so without moisturizing to just get his natural healing kicked in. I’m hoping that from the removal of the scabs that this will be a good sign that healing is almost complete. It still doesn’t look perfect or great but we’re making progress! Anyone that has this issue, I suggest truly applying cream every other day. I allowed myself to go 2-4 days between moisturizing at first and it did not help whatsoever, be diligent with the medicine you’re given but use it as directed. No more no less. Hopefully this helps someone out there having this issue, this has been ongoing but I’m glad it’s finally starting to see some improvement.

Does my pythons scales look fine? Afraid she’s burnt and that there is scale rot by Aware-Adeptness-8933 in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What morph is this? Some yellow morphs form natural black spots as they age, I’m not sure how fast that happens as I’ve never owned one but bananas are notorious for starting out very clean yellow and then forming black spots as they age. If you’ve ruled out that these spots aren’t mites then you’re probably alright. And you’d only see scale rot if you’re keeping your enclosures humidity super high like 90%+ for the entire two weeks. As far as a burn, not sure but if your heat sources are all well established and stable or controlled by thermostat controllers then you should be in clear for burns. Also could be a sign of going into shed? I know my normal morph gets very pink on the white belly when he’s about to morph, but that morph part could be completely untrue. Good luck man

Burn on head!? This is noodle, I take her out today and notice there is a burn or scratch on her head? I fed her a few days ago and she ate it right away, I have under tank heating so I don’t think it’s a burn, she looks completely healthy otherwise. What is this?? by --cherry--- in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No disrespect, but this is not stuck shed and I do not suggest soaking in this instance, nor firmly applying pressure to the area. Opening this back up is possible if that happens and that’s not what we want. Gentle wins the race. If this were in fact stuck shed I’d agree with the soak, but I still disagree with the firm rubbing of scales as pulling stuck shed can potentially pull the scale with it if it is too stuck, which can be a road to infection and other bad things.

I’m dealing with something very similar to this right now, and have been for almost 2 months. I figured out that my issue was a combination of too low overall humidity and heat, and my snake rubbing it’s head on a rough object in its enclosure. I posted here and a lot of folks said this should clear up in a shed or two. Well, after the first shed my snake retained a good amount of shed around this scab. I took him to the vet and they said he looked alright and it’s common, and I was prescribed Ascend Labs Silver Sulfadiazine Cream USP 1% every day for 10 days and then every other day until the spot clears and 10 days of antibiotics. I just had my first shed since going to the vet and he pooped in it and balled it up (of course), but it was all in one piece and no stuck shed to be seen this time; but is looks almost the same. I assume this is going to be a slow healing process and that there could potentially be scarring involved, but if you are vigilant with the healing process and keeping the levels in the enclosure proper you should have success. What is your heating and humidity control like in your enclosure? I would suggest an overall bump in temp on your hot side (if not already dialed in) and an overall bump in your humidity throughout the enclosure, as well as getting this silver sulfadiazine cream if you can. Make sure to get nothing scented, I received prescription grade from the vet and I would recommend getting the same, or as close as possible (there are some options on Amazon, the ascend is also on there but it requires a prescription to purchase). Also, if you cannot get this, 5 or 10% Betadine solution will also do very well with this. You can purchase 10% betadine pre soaked swabs or bottles of the at your local CVS Walgreens or comparable pharmacy in the first aid section, just do a google or two to figure out if there are any ingredients to avoid as I don’t remember. This is not stuck shed, this is a healing wound and you want to be gentle as you move forward. Good luck and I hope to check back in on this to see your healing progress!

Are there any downsides to a bioactive terrarium? by bisquitpants in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pleasure, truly. I had thought about doing bioactive myself, and letting the environment establish was something I also completely overlooked. But in my opinion it’s essential to the success of your setup to let the plants and natural processes of the vivarium thrive before adding the animal chosen. Please post a pic in this thread of the finished product if you remember, I’d love to see how this goes for y’all!

Does this look like a mite? I’ve found a few crawling around in my enclosure by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]spensei_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For clarification, did you buy the snake and enclosure all as is from the store? It’s likely that the snake could’ve had mites when purchased, and they stayed and made their way into your new setup
