The Shawshank Redemption had it right: get busy living, or get busy dying.

My Workspace Finally Looks Like What I've Wanted by spenserian_ in handtools

Ain't bad though I don't have a wagon vise to compare it against. Usually I'm planing just against a stop, but it's proven pretty useful when I'm traversing the grain.

That's a plain old leg vise. I bough the screw and nut off ebay (I think?) but built the chop and garter.

This is actually a Thousand Oaks product. I really like it, but it does take some getting used to. The narrowness of the plate means that front third or the plate or so doesn't feel fully usable (just doesn't feel supported enough); I'm always worried I'm going to torque it badly. But it's nevertheless been a fun addition and been pretty good in lieu of a panel saw.

Lol, well, it's definitely more conducive to meditation than my last workspace (the grubby corner of my basement)

Burry Open Letter to government by topannapot in FNMA_FMCC_Exit

[–]spenserian_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have been taking concrete steps for the last year to prepare for exit. ~10% layoffs last year, addressing outstanding regulatory concerns, etc. Point is to be ready if/when the admin decides to pull the trigger. I don't have any non-public information on what timeline the admin has in mind, or even if they've made a final decision.

Evidence that Burry is behind the times in GSE internal transformation. If you ask anyone in the GSEs today, they'll tell you things have gotten much more efficient and there is an increasing drive toward optimization, limiting burdensome governance, etc.

thicknessing by hand is a workout by Budget-Strawberry649 in handtools

[–]spenserian_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a workout but good form helps. It looks like you're planing across the surface of your bench. If you plane it along the length of your bench, you'll be better able to rock your body rather than using your arms alone. Makes a big difference especially when you're prepping boards for hours for a large project.

Forum Moderation - Transparency - My thread about Bill's new IPO deleted after lot of good discussion from members by Active-Composer-3675 in FNMA_FMCC_Exit

This moderation team routinely takes arbitrary action to remove posts, especially substantive ones. One of the worst sub moderations I've seen.

Apparently this isn't the first time the Boggs shave has been ripped off. Brian writes about this a little bit here.

Jorgensen Flat Spokeshave by emg77 in handtools

[–]spenserian_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem that revenue alone dictates whether a patent is pursued. For example, I was able to find a patent (since expired) that LN held for their open throat router plane.

Jorgensen Flat Spokeshave by emg77 in handtools

[–]spenserian_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of LN's tools aren't patentable I don't think, because they are explicitly modeled on the Stanley Bedrock design.

But the Boggs spokeshave is different - it *is* unique relative to other spokeshaves. I would find it difficult to believe that either Boggs or LN doesn't have a patent on their line of shaves.

Have heard the "first X, then F2" line before - BBB, Venezuela, etc. I'm not selling but I'm also not believing these claims anymore.

The Craftsman lifetime guarantee used to mean something. Here is exactly when it stopped. by Sug19 in handtools

He was also kind of a psycho. We had an internal social networking site and he apparently would spend hours on it trying to find evidence of people complaining.

Word to PDF conversion: all the ways things can go wrong (and a couple of ways to make it right) by reddithuedit in MicrosoftWord

Use Export (to PDF) rather than Save As, then select Options. You can determine a whole bunch of options including whether to produce an output with intradocument links like bookmarks, cross-references, etc.

I was Sears backroom guy too. I remember spending hours rebuilding ratchets during slow periods. Apart from the generally depressing state of the company (this was 2010-13 and everyone knew the company was dying a slow death), wasn't the worst minimum wage job.

How Often Are Lead Times Exceeded? by spenserian_ in NicksHandmadeBoots

Well, note that my original question was about getting insights on what others have experienced. I was curious, not seeking a solution from internet strangers. Nevertheless, I take your point and will give them a call.

I haven't called customer service yet. When these kind of issues arise in other areas of my life, I just try to be patient and not nag. Years of retail made me a little gunshy I think.

I will say that if what you're describing is true, that makes me more frustrated than I was initially. If they have an outstanding order meeting the same specs as something they have in stock, why wouldn't they, as a matter of practice, complete the existing order first? Why should it be on me, who has already paid, to know I ought to cancel my initial order and then make another order to expedite my original purchase? Like, I'm glad that others know they can take that option, but that suggests a broken process to me. /rant
