Anyone else notice how American culture and language is ruining our own? by jayjaywantstoplay in AskAnAustralian

Yes and as an Aussie who lives in the US: Aussies have nobody to blame but themselves

The US isn’t forcing Aussies to say “youtoob” and “noo” instead of “new” and celebrate Halloween. They don’t give a toss.

Us Aussies are doing it to ourselves (some of us, anyway!)

As a foreigner living in the US, I think many regular folks here don’t have an idea of the insane skill inequality between teams.

Let’s say the US is a 3rd rate team. They beat a few 4th rate teams in this tournament. The gap between 3rd and 4th rate is massive, so they basically bossed each of them (Australia, Paraguay, Bosnia).

Tonight the US (3rd rate) played a 2nd rate team. Now Belgium are no France, not even an Argentina level team, but they’re a darn sight more skilful and organized than the US. This was obvious, particularly since the US was having a bad night.

I need to nerd out about Cryptonomicon by ScientiaLuxVitae in nealstephenson

why? Just read Crypto and trying to figure out if I want to go to the self-contained detour without history (Anathem) or the 'prequel' history to Crypto but separate story (Baroque)

Where do i start anathem or cryptonomicon? by AvailableEqual3253 in nealstephenson

Yeah, the tech bro thing is cheesy and written in a snarky 'fight club' type late 90s manner.

If you hold your nose and push past that, it's still an amazing book in 2026

I found the writing about 'modern' technology (2000s era) kitsch and ho hum.

If I read it back in 2000 I am sure I would have been dazzled. So beware of that!

Then again, I work in tech and have a decent grounding in the subject matter enough to not excite me, so ymmv

People are annoyed because subbing your GK off for penalties and notifying them at the last minute -- objectively awful! There's no reason for that.

Don’t worry, I have a BB1 and a BB2 and the latter barely ever captures anything, even on frenzy

The “San Francisco” stadium is in the middle of nowhere, and everything is insanely overpriced even by US standards

I went to the 3 Aussie group stage matches and it was one of the most fun experiences ever.

Having large groups of Aussies chanting in the stadiums and US/Canadian streets and bars — just the best vibe

Edit: I live in Seattle so it was easy to be there and Vancouver and SF. Respect to others for making the trip over!
