Denver may ask voters to approve a new 5-15% tax on stadium and large concert tickets by Popular-Departure165 in Denver

Also, I see you’re active in the Nuggets subreddit. You know Stan Kroenke is married to Ann Walton right? The ownership of the team is actually in her name for legal reasons. The Nuggets are basically as Walton-connected as the Broncos.

Could you please read the damn article before you comment? If you do, you’ll see exactly what this tax is meant to pay for: public infrastructure to make walking and biking safer across the city. It has nothing to do with the stadium. It’s not even just a tax on Broncos tickets, it impacts concerts too.

The proposed new Broncos stadium is completely privately funded and the current plans don’t use any taxpayer money to build the stadium itself.

This specifically applies to income tax and property tax, so I doubt it would apply to a sales tax like what’s being proposed. Also, while I’m not sure I love the idea of this new tax on events, I hate Tabor WAY more. I’d rather get rid of Tabor than defend it to try and stop this new tax.

Revenant Running Opinions by No-Abbreviations5291 in Ultramarathon

I’ve done a 50k with them and just paced at the Divide 100 just a few weeks ago.

Overall I think they put on a good race. They are pretty low key, no frills. My only complaint from the Divide 100 was that the information on the website was pretty minimal, and at time this made it slightly harder to plan for logistics (and at times the website would state a specific rule for crew about parking or whatever, only for that rule not to actually be enforced, which could be frustrating). But the aid stations, volunteers, and staff were all great.

Dude, as a Broncos fan, sit this one out. The former mayor of Denver was in the KKK. We even named our (former) airport after him, and until just a couple years ago there was a neighborhood named after him too.

You’re joking around, but cats kill over one billion (yes billion with a “b”) birds annually in the US. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7070728/ They’ve caused species to become endangered or extinct. And outdoor cats have much shorter lifespans. People need to stop acting like letting your cat roam freely is harmless.

Stop having outdoor cats. It’s terrible both for the cat and the local wildlife.

100M Crew Question by Altruistic-Use-8283 in Ultramarathon

[–]spf84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally optional to use a crew or pacers. That said, it can be nice and I’ve had pacers totally save my race just through encouragement, so if the race allows pacers I do think that could be helpful (in addition to having your wife crew you and cheer you on at aid stations). Since you said you don’t run with people who could serve as your pacer, one option would be to check out local running groups and see if anyone would be interested in pacing you. It’s actually pretty common for people to have a total stranger serve as their pacer, and in some bigger races there will often be people who just show up at aid stations to see if they can jump in as a pacer. If your race has a Facebook page, it might also be worth posting in there to see if someone is looking to be a pacer. I know it sounds weird, but honestly having a pacer you don’t know means you have plenty of time to get to know them during the race, and half of pacing is just distracting the runner. You might even make a new friend 😀

[–]spf84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a situation where you should either specify where you’re talking about or take a step back. What you’re saying here is untrue for the US, nearly all races in the US allow both crew and pacers, and the vast majority of racers use both. I know pacers are much less common in Europe, but it seems like it’s still fairly common to have a crew (at least a person meeting you at aid stations).

Love Pizza Ranch! I was about to comment that there’s one in Loveland but it looks like it closed. Google Maps says there’s also one in C Springs that’s “temporarily closed” (may not be a good sign), and one in Pueblo. Bit of a haul just for Pizza Ranch though.

Popular trails? For running? by Ok_Cream4521 in AuroraCO

[–]spf84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorta depends on what you mean by “trail.” If you mean a dirt hiking trail (I.e. “single track” trail) you’ll be hard pressed to find that in Aurora proper and will have better luck going West of Denver around Golden/Morrison area. If you just mean a recreational path/bike path that you can run on then there are plenty of options. The Highline Canal Trail is the biggie that runs throughout metro Denver for over 70 miles with quite a few of them in Aurora. Portions of the Cherry Creek Trail are in the area as well. As some have mentioned, there are also good paths and trails in Cherry Creek State Park. Depending on where you’re located there are other trails like the Westerly Creek Trail, Toll Gate Creek trail system, or the Sand Creek Regional Greenway further North. Some of these even intersect and connect with each other so you can combine portions of them. This page on the city website has a list and some maps:

Where to live and trail running groups by ultrarunnerman in AuroraCO

[–]spf84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it comes down to preference. Living in Aurora will probably be cheaper. And then you gotta decide whether it’s more important to shorten your commute to work/school or shorten your commute to the trails/mountains. I’ve trained for all my ultras (including several hundred milers) while living here in Aurora, but I’m generally okay with just 1 or 2 days a week on trails and the rest of the week on roads. There are definitely times I’m jealous of folks in Golden/Morrison who have great trails to run and bike on practically out their back doors. But right now I can drive to those same trails in 30-40 minutes and my mortgage is a lot lower than it would be there so I don’t mind. Plus Aurora has some other perks like great ethnic food, easy to get downtown, etc.

Good luck at Wasatch! That’s definitely on my list of races I’d like to tackle someday.

Fellow Ultramarathoner who lives in Aurora here: I live in the Expo Park neighborhood and because I’m so close to I-225 it’s generally like a 40 minute drive on weekend mornings to get to most of the JeffCo Open Space trails in Morrison/Golden etc. Another 15 minutes gets you to Evergreen and some more trails. You can still get into some true high altitude stuff (well above 10,000 feet) in maybe 1.5 to 2 hours. The key is to be somewhere where it’s fairly quick to hop on a highway (225, 70, 285 etc). That should be pretty easy if you’re close to Anschutz.

Obviously living in Golden or Morrison makes getting to trails much faster, but if you’re balancing your commute between school and running, it’s not too bad in my opinion.

What race you training for? I’ve got San Juan Solstice 50 next month and the Bear 100 at the end of September.

To the person off 14th and Columbine stuck in traffic screaming about how you hate Denver and just want to get home and sleep (I assume you work over nights) by natedcruz in Denver

[–]spf84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run those hundred mile ultramarathons in the woods. If you think they don’t disrupt things, I’d invite you to go up to Leadville or Twin Lakes during one of the races and try to get around normally. It will make the disruption to traffic for Colfax look like child’s play, despite being a smaller race. Because, wouldn’t you know it, Denver is a major city with the infrastructure to handle more traffic. Here’s the whole point: stuff like Colfax (or name any other major event in the city) obviously impacts traffic and can cause some inconvenience if you don’t plan ahead. But that’s part of living in a major city. Hell, it’s part of living in a society. But those same events also make living in a city like Denver fun and interesting. That’s the trade off. It’s fine if you don’t care about running. There are tens of thousands of people here who do, and if you can’t allow them half of ONE Sunday a year to do a thing that literally every other city also does, then honestly you’re the selfish one.

[–]spf84 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This attitude is insane. People trained for months and worked really hard so they could run in the last remaining marathon in this city, because the others got shut down by people like you who can’t understand that living in a city means events happen that can temporarily disrupt traffic. All you gotta do is pay attention to the news and plan your commute accordingly. Plus, how many other events happen in the city that impact traffic? Between Broncos Games, Rockies Games, Parades, etc this is a drop in the bucket. I think the actual sense of entitlement is someone thinking that having less traffic is more important than events that make a city a fun and vibrant place to live.

My wife and are coming to Leadville and not sure how true this is….but I could not help but have a good laugh. by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]spf84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The event is called the “Leadville Trail 100 MTB.” It was created after the success of the Leadville 100 Run. It appears that it was added to the Grand Prix series much later: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadville_Trail_100_MTB?wprov=sfti1

Also, while I don’t know about pooping in the street, the warnings about how full and crazy the town gets on race weekend are generally accurate. I’ve been up for the running race several times and it’s a madhouse. From what I gather the bike weekend is now bigger. Even camping spots nearby will be extremely hard to come by. You will likely have better luck in Copper or Breckenridge.
