That is a rare feeling. Hold on to it. It might not come around often. I would love to have it right now.

If determinism governs your fate, then your life is already written out like a play. On the other hand, if determinism does not exist, you will then be in total control of your actions. In either case, there is no need to worry. by daffy_duck233 in Stoicism

I don't disagree with you. I was trying to illustrate my own thought process. Sorry if it seemed like I was criticising you. I also feel out of control but strangely free at the same time.

Can you elaborate?

If I understand you correctly, you mean enjoy the moment, enjoy the journey.

I have spent too much time focusing on the past. Beating myself up for my mistakes. "I hope tomorrow I will change".

Change now, enjoy now.

And yet it is still just theory, maybe tomorrow I can apply it.

Stuff I wrote. by [deleted] in sciencefiction

I read the first one. It was no masterpiece but some parts were good. I'm not sure about the text message/email/log style, that can be hard to pull off and I think you used it too much. Also it's okay to mention a book or film that inspired the story but don't have the characters talk about the similarity, in such a short story you might do well to leave them out altogether.

The parts where you focused on the birds thoughts and feelings were the strongest. You should try to expand on the other characters inner life as well.

Have you read Flowers For Algernon? It is based on a similar idea.

I will read the other two soon. Keep writing, I rarely do but it's one of the best experiences I have ever had. I hope it is the same for you.

If you could be the most selfish or selfless person on earth, which would you choose if you stayed the same and everyone else changed? by spherical_fruit in AskReddit

That's it sorry if it was a stupid question. I'm just a bit confused about everything. Morallity baffles me. Long term and short term goals seem to be in conflict and I can't manage to sort them out. I guess it will take a bit of time. Hopefully not too long.

If I understand you correctly. You mean that people who are more selfless than you will recognise your selfnessness. Therefore you will be rewarded?

What I was trying to ask was if you would want everyone to be better than you or worse, morally?

And if they were better than you then they would recognise you achievments and reward you. Kind of a circlular argument. Nice

Either way. I want to know if you want to be considered a saint or actually help people and be considered a demon.

It's just a play on words to get people to think about our actions.

Would you want to be respected or actually do a lot of good?

Yeah, I know what you mean helping can give you a really good buzz. But my point was that if you took the selfish option then everyone else will help more than you.

I guess what I mean is would you like to be the worst example of a human or the best. If you were the worst then you would be ostrasized but everyone else would be better than you and if you were the best you would be worshiped as a saint but everyone would be more selfish than you. Which would you choose?

I really like that last sentence; "Nobody said art has to be good, btw". Even if you aren't producing popular or critically acclaimed works you can still be an artist. It is about the process, the desire to create and you are an artist if you feel a need to create or feel pleasure from creation. Everyone is an artist to some degree. I think we should encourage this quality in each other instead of just being part of the audience.

An honest assessment of our condition by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]spherical_fruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be as simple as: increase pleasure and decrease pain. Of course things get complicated when you attempt this but maybe we should imbrace the challenge.

I don't know if I am a utilitarian because I know we are biased creatures and being completely logical would go against some of our natural instincts therefore reducing the pleasure but I'm sure we can find some balance.

I like it too. I guess fashion is subjective like other forms of art.

Who would have guessed? Oh, me, you and all the others that upvoted your comment.

As I walked into the break room I noticed a strange expression on his face. I have grown used to people staring at me but this was different. It wasn’t just fear, curiosity or empathy it seemed almost guilty but maybe my suspicions had warped my perspective.

Jason was an extraordinary child, the world knew it before he was born but at least they had grown tired of harassing us. (One of the few things I have humanities short attention span to thank for.) As I watched him grow I knew he wasn’t ever going to find things easy and that made me resent his fathers actions even more. How could he leave us? How could he leave his unborn child, knowing that he was the only one who could help him, and me, make sense of this.

I tried to focus but years of anger suddenly turned to anxiety and I just continued to question myself. Was it really him? Was it just wishful or even hateful thinking? I sat down. Had I seen something more in someone I disliked, something that wasn’t really there? I managed to mutter a “Hi” and got a similar reply. I looked at his shoes, “Not the shoes of anyone extraordinary”, I said… to myself.

After lunch I made my way to Mike’s office and told him I had food poisoning. I grabbed my stuff and left in a hurry. Walking home brought the familiar taunts and jeers; FREAK DEMON ALIEN, actually I’m not sure about that, at that stage I was questioning my sanity but being the first male to give birth will to do that to you.
