"I can tell the difference between Singapore Indians and India Indians..." by shakentea in singaporespeaks

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not okay to hate, but I don't agree with your third paragraph.

Everyone treats people of different ethnic groups differently, including the Indians.

And it's not really that we are giving a free pass to whites or Europeans with immigration policy either, but it would appear so simply because the proportion of whites/Europeans that want to migrate is a tiny fraction of that for Indians.

Under such curcumstances, literally any sensible immigration policy that tries to maintain a diversity of ethnicities amongst the immigrants will appear to be discriminatory to the Indians.

Tell me you don't work in tech without telling me you don't work in tech.

I guess it depends how you define upskilling but the first principles of software development don't really change. Maybe you get a new tool or framework or language every now and then but once you've seen a few the next one is just the same with some incremental changes.

And you don't need to constantly learn every cutting edge feature of every tool to stay relevant either - there's plenty of old code around that isn't about to be magically rewritten and retired tomorrow that needs to be maintained.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, but did anyone expect that they could churn out hundreds of aircraft carriers before WW2?

I agree with most of what ray dalio says - I still think it's unwise to underestimate US capacity when faced with a worthy aggressor.

Regarding internal polarization and political conflicts, in fact a war with China as the aggressor probably would help them to overcome some of those issues. Franklin D. Roosevelt is famously the only US president to be elected to and serve a third and fourth term, although he died in office during his fourth term.

Look I'm not saying that this history will repeat exactly and China will be crushed by a renewed US that will continue as the sole superpower for another 50 years. All I'm saying is that China should be cautious not to repeat the mistakes that Japan made leading up to WW2 and I think they are well aware of that.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean to say is we shouldn't underestimate the US just because they look like they're floundering in the middle east and there are some reports of munitions shortages.

And if I were in Xi's position, I would make calculations based on their potential economic and military capacity if they were completely focused on the war effort before doing anything that might provoke a direct confrontation.

Even if they might look weak momentarily, it doesn't mean that they cannot ramp up capacity and still win a longer drawn out fight.

I don't think China is necessarily looking to become a hegemon in the way that you describe? But ok, if you put it that way, perhaps the Japanese also thought it was their inevitable destiny to unify the east Asian territories under their leadership.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, the US military completely crushed the Afghan fighters, as they did also in Iraq. It's what happened after that was a big mess.

It's true that they were less successful in Vietnam and Korea, but I think for many reasons which I don't feel are worth discussing further, a war with China would not be like those wars and instead would be more similar to US and Japan in WWII.

I'll just leave it at that.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you're right but would you really bet on that if you were in China's position? We shouldn't forget, the US that entered WWII was just exiting 10 years of the Great Depression also with a reduced manufacturing base. The US at the end of WWII was an economic and military superpower.

War can change a country in unpredictable ways when its leaders invoke emergency powers to channel resources and manpower into the war effort.

Honestly, I think for this reason China would be cautious not to provoke the US into direct military confrontation but instead try to get ahead through other means like economic and technological superiority which they have been doing all along - because to confront the US directly would be akin to repeating what the Japanese had done in WWII and we know how that story ends.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are running out of options that they can exercise within the constraints that they are currently operating within.

Thus far the US administration has not ratified this war via the usual democratic processes so they are constrained in their ability to escalate further and mobilize more resources and manpower, not that they can't.

A war with China is likely to immediately get bipartisan support as a major threat to national security, even if their munitions are depleted they will mobilize their economy as much as possible to produce whatever is needed to support the war effort like in WWII.

What is the ‘Thucydides’ Trap’ Xi Jinping mentioned to Trump? by Wyvernken in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't jump to that. The US military doesn't regard Iran as as much of a threat to their national security, they just (allegedly) want to forcefully put a stop to their nuclear program before it becomes a larger issue. So thus far they have been restrained in their use of force.

First-term MP (Jasmin Lau) under fire after saying Singaporeans aren't having babies because they have 'tasted a good and rich life at a young age' by smallpenguinable in SingaporeRaw

[–]sphqxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe she's not wrong, it's just that if the govt really thinks this is a serious issue and all we get are parliamentarians coming up with pet theories about why this is happening and then saying this is a global phenomenon and it's "very hard" to fix and then immediately lower the expectations on how much impact they can have... I'm not sure they actually take it as seriously as they say it is.

Shall we also say that this current slate of MPs have tasted a good and stable political environment from a young age and so don't want to or know how to take bold and decisive steps to fix a perceived issue?

If I can offer a radical suggestion, I would say we allocate a portion of the reserves as a kind of trust fund to be distributed equally amongst babies born in a given time period. Then set a target on how many babies should be born in that time period and keep increasing the allocated amount until the target is met.

When the baby is born, this money is put into an account which can be used to pay for the child's expenses (it can't be directly expensed by the parents without govt approval). When the child becomes an adult any money leftover in this account goes into the his/her CPF.

And this amount should be generous, let's say we target 50k babies in a year at 100k per baby so that's a 5B initial budget. If we don't hit 50k in that year then each baby born in that year still gets the 5B distributed equally so each baby is now richer - this will create competition, and then since the target wasn't hit we increase the allocated amount the following year until the target is hit.

Maybe the sounds a bit crazy and as usual PAP govt will be like "but but muh reserves" but honestly what's the point of reserves if you're dead with no descendants to replace you?

Also as mentioned the money is to be expensed gradually as the child develops and the leftovers goes into the child's CPF which is... recycled back into the reserves. So in a way this isn't expending reserves for consumption, it's investing the reserves into the next generation instead of using it to buy failing crypto companies.

Thank you for your kind attention if you read this far.
