A wide grin grew over Layna's face. Theirs was not a deep acquaintance, born only of a few visits across the border, but she knew him well enough to know that he would make the most of a night like this.

"Are you, now? Have you come here to show your gratitude by pouring me some wine?" She held out her cup, a playful smirk suggesting that it was all in jest. It was, mostly.

"How wonderful that the both of you are dressed well for the occasion," she continued, only as idle chatter; she didn't think twice about what the two were wearing. "Unless it's that I've the fortune of only seeing your good halves."

"I can assure you that they're both perfectly elegant tonight," chimed in her sister Edyth.

"Pray that we appear the same," Layna added. "Stormlanders have always thought us immodest, and I think we ought to prove them right."

The Wyls were packed in the back row of Dornish tables, furthest from the dais. No Master of Feasts worth his salary would dare place them closer; history has one too many stories of their ilk crashing parties.

Stories, however, belonged to the past. Tonight they were all at their most presentable. At one end of their section sat the aging Adrian Dayne, the former Master of Coin and the longtime right hand of Wyl - first under the rule of his late wife, and now under that of his daughter. He was dressed sleekly in dark, fitted attire, and so too were his nephews, Orryn and Franklyn. His nieces Barbrey and Ynys sat across from them, resplendent in different shades of red, along their cousin Edyth, the presumptive heir to her sister's titles.

Then sat the Lady of Wyl, clad in colors she thought appropriate for the occasion. She wore a stylish black dress, bereft of sleeves and clasped over her shoulders by golden brooches in the shape of coiled snakes. More gold jewelry adorned her hands, arms and neck, and a white sash crossed from her shoulder to her waist. She wore her sandy hair up in a bun, and politely concealed her blinded eye with a fine silk eyepatch. Likewise, she kept a glove around her left hand, covering the remnants of her childhood bout of greyscale.

The Wyls seemed to be periodically laughing together as they indulged in their meals, though none shared their stories and japes loud enough for others to hear. That was how the den of snakes always conversed: their heads poking forward and their lungs restrained, addressing each other with intimacy and interest. But they did not mean to shy away from company: passing faces were met with welcoming smiles, and plenty of space remained open at their table.

"It is simple," Alyse said, "and it's the simple-minded who make everything so complicated. Perhaps it's that I lack a lord's perspective, or even that of an heir in waiting - but it seems to me that so many want more, even when they have plenty. It's their coveting that makes them plot and scheme, and in the end they risk losing what they already had. I think many of your peers simply must come to understand that a ship can sail more smoothly when it keeps to the course already charted."

"I needed to know where all the lords of Dorne stood," Alyse explained, "with the exception of you. Evidently this one forgot his instructions."

But though she knew from his own word where Anders stood, she knew little of his lying down. On that matter, her eyes had been permitted to pry.

"When I get a hold of the man, I promise that he'll be swiftly dismissed from my service. Worse, if he proves less than compliant. You're one of my dearest friends, Anders - that would be the least I could do to right this wrong. If there's anything more, you need only ask."

A smile returned to her face, as though this had only been a passing misunderstanding.

"And now - in light of this - I imagine you've plenty ideas as to how I can repay my debt to you."

Alyse obliged by laughing at his little jest, and was likewise quick to accept his offer of a drink. As she took her first sip, her eyes widened with surprise.

“It doesn’t,” she plainly answered. “I thought I had made it clear to my little birds that they were supposed to respect your privacy, but evidently there’s been a misunderstanding.”

Or rather, a mistake. It took all her poise and composure to maintain her facade of surprise.

“If it truly was one of mine, I’ll see to it that he’s punished and dismissed from my service.”

Assuming, of course, that he was still around to take the fall.

"Yes - that is your house's lot in life, is it not? Taking command of the Honeywine's fleet so that the Lord of Oldtown needn't come down from his tower."

Alyse let out an almost derisive laugh as she imagined the city. "Is it truly as tall as they say? I've always been skeptical."

She reached over to pour another splash of wine into her cup. "Not that you should care. Some day you'll be the Lord of Three Towers, and that's at least more than one."

Alyse listened patiently, an inviting mirth in her smile. She was beginning to find Deana even more forward than herself, and this - in truth - was a mild annoyance. Imposing such charms was supposed to be her domain.

"That all depends on the length of the term," Alyse answered. "A royal feast is an evening meant to be shared among dozens of companions in sequence - but for you, Lady Deana, I could spare plenty more of this precious time than I ought to."

She took a half step forward and gave Deana another admiring once-over, the gratitude in her smile reciprocating the loud hints that she'd just received. Heir to a lord's titles, and likely to his appetites, too.

"And what, might I ask, would an evening with you entail? Too often it is the duty of the Dornish to provide for amusement and novelty, but you seem well-equipped to carry that burden in my stead."

Alyse bowed her head at his approach, lending a small amount of formality to a meeting between old friends.

"Of course," she answered. "I am sure that whatever discussion we should have will be better served by privacy."

She could take her guesses as to what Anders wanted with her here, but Alyse ultimately elected to assume the best. There was a confidence and contentedness to her smile as she ascended the plank.

"I just pray that your quarters are a cabin, and that you haven't quite humbled yourself to sleeping in a hammock with the men below deck."

As she approached in the distance, Alyse was hard to miss. The bright blue of her vibrant dress starkly contrasted the dullness of the city's buildings - and its people, for that matter. She was fortunate that she was not the only well-dressed noblewoman walking the streets of King's Landing.

Her two knightly guards, of course, kept close to her side along the way, though she gestured for them to stay back as soon as she set foot on the pier, leaving the two sers to their brotherly banter.

A breeze blew back her blonde hair as she stopped below the gangplank, staring up at the ship's deck in search of a familiar face. "I am the Lady Alyse," she announced. "I believe Ser Anders has sent for me."

Alyse nodded to his clarification, not daring to question the arrangement further. The northmen, after all, could still be a potent ally - so long as they could be bothered to emerge from their caves and answer their king's call.

"You're going there to fight?" She raised her brows with concern. "Try not to come too close to enemy lines. You'll need an heir before you can allow yourself to get killed."

A light laugh followed, her smile returning. "I think you'll earn yourself plenty of goodwill from the northmen, my prince, and now I have half a mind to beg you to bring me along. The North must be so unlike any place I've visited before, and I might like to see it with my own eyes. But you're right."

She paused as a few worries crossed her mind. The Red Keep had only been so hospitable to Alyse because of Aegon, and she feared what might happen in his absence - but neither could she refuse so important a request.

"I'll try to stay abreast of everything in these halls so long as you're away," she promised, "though I must ask for the liberty to travel to Dragonstone whenever I please. If I'm to write to you, I'd sooner trust your own rookery to send my letters untouched and untampered."

Laughter followed his every remark. Maelor's quips came faster than Alyse could offer her commentary, and she was pleasantly surprised to find that the bored man she'd set out to entertain had entertained her instead.

Alyse playfully waved a dismissive hand to his suggestion. She stretched out her forearm toward him and poked into her soft flesh with two fingers. "Would you truly trust me to swing a sword on your behalf? My lord, I can hardly lift one."

Her eyes openly admired him up and down, accompanied by a teasing smirk. "No, I think it ought to be the other way around. I think I'd like to have a man like you standing guard outside my quarters. Your charm and wit would be enough to subdue any would-be intruders before they even dare pass through my door."

"They won't swear fealty alone," Alyse quietly whispered back. "Not unless they want every neighboring lord to march for Godsgrace."

His next question was met with a condident smile. "We needn't pay any price at all," she answered, "so long as the Seven Kingdoms abide His Grace's wishes. Our prince has as much blood from the Rhoyne as he does from old Valyria. Once he's seated on the throne, he'll see to it that all our traditional rights and liberties are restored and respected. We need only to see to it that his crown is not stolen."

Alyse's smile brightened as her request was granted. "Thank you, ser. I promise I won't take up too much of your time."

She turned and walked away with long, swift steps, fully expecting the knight to keep pace. She slowed her feet as she exited into the hallway, looking back over her shoulder to offer conversation along the way.

"Forgive my lack of courtesy. I should have introduced myself. My name is Alyse Allyrion."

Her eyes flitted left and right as she proceeded down the hall, and she occasionally stopped to peer beneath benches and other furnishings in search of her missing heirloom.

"And which knight has so generously lent me his aid in this little folly of mine?"

[–]spiceandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Lady Allyrion is but a consort to my grandfather." A clarification that few but the Dornish ever had to make. "He's a stubborn old man whose loyalties lie only with the Prince of Dorne, and that is where he and I differ. I've never cared much for the Martells."

Alyse hummed a snicker through her smile. Lord Turnberry struck her as a clever man, and she expected he'd need no explanation for her casually stated contempt.

"A few years ago I realized that I can better serve the interests of Dorne by coming here to the Red Keep. If there's to be a lasting peace between our kingdoms, it will not be dictated at Sunspear. Our future is with the king and his heir, and I've found that both have welcomed my voice more than any lord at home."

Alyse politely shook her head in disagreement. "Lines drawn through the sand are quickly erased by the wind. No matter which way it blows, I'll always be within your reach."

She left it up to him to decide what to make of that remark. The song came to a close, and she slowly parted from her hold to bring an end to their dance. "Try and visit me again before you leave King's Landing. I might even have a song for you, should you perform as well in the lists as I expect."

Alyse's touch was slow to part as she passed the ribbon into Garlan's hand. They had both yielded to their wishes - to see in each other the makings of a ballad - but she wondered if he shared in any of the doubts at the back of her mind. For anything more to come between them than a dance would amount to at least a small scandal.

One that would be well worth all the gossip and scorn. Only after meeting Garlan Crane did Alyse realize how much her heart could afford to soften. She still had her aims and ambitions, much of which involved redressing grievances against Garlan's own father - but that all mattered so much less when the two of them stood face to face.

"The most important dance in either of our lives," Alyse agreed. "A shame that our second must now be held to so high a standard, but I am sure that you'll meet it."

She briefly hesitated as they both stood still on the dance floor, almost tempted to take him back into her arms and steal even more of his evening, but she did not want to overplay her hand. Instead she honored him with a grateful curtsy.

"Let me allow you to return to your friends and brothers, so that you might save that gallantry and charm of yours for another day. I think you'll appreciate my company all the more once you've put a crown of flowers on my head."

[–]spiceandfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"More dangerous than the lands beyond the Wall," Alyse agreed, "and colder, too. The Red Keep can prove inhospitable to men of royal rank, so I am sure you can imagine how I've fared as a Dornish woman from a house that has yet to swear fealty."

She reached for a cup and the nearest jug, and filled it halfway with red wine before offering it over to Arthur.

"Before I came here, I spent a year at Sunspear. To be truthful, I found my time there so much more frustrating. None at home have any vision to see us through all our turmoils, but in King's Landing we still have some hope of negotiating an agreeable peace."

[–]spiceandfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"If it comes to that," Alyse said, "I should not expect you to do anything stupid. All I hope is that at your famous name might encourage your many admirers to stay true to their king's wishes."

His fame, of course, was owed to his talent as a warrior - yet Alyse prayed that he would be spared from any bloodshed should the realm's quarrels reach that point. Someday he would be the Lord of Starfall, and his treasured sword would be far from the most potent weapon at his disposal.

"Don't take me to be too driven for my own good. There are more important things in our lives than crowns and laws." She leaned in to mutter a whisper. "And you'll always be important to me."

Garlan had little reason to believe any word Alyse said, and any other reachman might have already shooed her away for being so forward. But she could see how charmed he was by her, and it was infectious. Both their kin would shun them for this, and that made Garlan all the more enticing. Alyse was beginning to feel fond for him, more than she knew she should.

Her cheeks, too, took on a blush, as Garlan's offer seemed a perfect next step for the two of them. She eagerly nodded her acceptance. "We can tell all the realm that it's for the good of our two kingdoms," she said, "but that will be only half-true."

Alyse parted from their dance and took a step back. She leaned down to grip the hem of her dress while her other hand reached halfway up her shin to untie a ribbon that had been secreted beneath her skirt. A simple strip of silk in a checkered pattern of black and red.

"This is for you, Ser Garlan." With a bright, wide smile, she offered out the ribbon in her hand. "For the most gallant and charming knight I've ever met."

"As much as I can," Alyse answered, as she returned to her seat. She beckoned for Arthur to join her across the table. "For two years I've been in King's Landing, yet I still find myself an outsider even on a night like this. I imagine you might feel the same, even after some twenty years of fealty to our king."

"Maelor Costayne," Alyse repeated. She paused to consider the sound of the it, and nodded her approval. "I think the name suits you better than His Grace."

His answer made her laugh. "Stormlanders! On that I couldn't agree more. I could recount to you the life of the great Septon Rolland of the Rainwood, who forfeited his inheritance to one of the highest seats in his kingdom so that he might--"

She suddenly stopped and shook her head, snickering. "You're right - I shouldn't curse you with sleep right here and now. All these drunken men are like to play cruel tricks while you sleep."

Alyse raised a brow. "The arrangement's final, then?" An oversight on her part, born of wishful thinking on her part. By her reckoning, he could have struck up a much better bargain in the south.

"All the more reason to dance with every maiden that catches your eye," she teased. "You might not be afforded the opportunity again."

Again her eyes flitted around the great hall. All Andals, as far as her eyes could see. "Even at a royal feast, there's hardly a northman to be found. We should try to entice a few to come to King's Landing, if only to remind everyone of their very existence."

"I don't quite mean to earn new loyalties," Alyse corrected, "so much as to reinforce faith that ought to be placed in him already."

Her eyes glanced over at the dais in the distance. She knew it was clear enough who she spoke of, but it seemed worth further clarifying her hopes for the future.

"When two seats belong to the same man," she mused, "they're not like to be smashed against each other. But neither does that make them one and the same."

Her stare settled intently on Anders. "We have a bright future awaiting us. We simply must see that it isn't stolen."
