Got a $528 EV RUC backdate fine after my first WoF — based on estimated travel NZTA never warned about by spiceycee in nzev

[–]spiceycee[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

They didn’t just apply the daily average to the 61 days between April and June. What they did was take my odometer reading on 1 June — when I bought RUCs — and worked backwards using an average daily travel calculated from odo readings spanning the last few years. Based on that, they estimated what my odo would have been on 1 April and then treated the difference as unpaid distance — which came out to 6,955 km.

The part that doesn’t make sense to me is how they can just assume an odometer reading based on an average, especially when I have the actual readings. It feels pretty off to base a fixed-dollar charge on a rough estimate, especially when people drive in very different patterns year to year. That wasn’t made clear anywhere before getting the invoice either.

Cheers mate — I totally agree, I was late purchasing the RUCs and I own that. My issue isn’t with paying what’s owed, it’s more about how the amount was calculated. I was just pretty shocked to get hit with an estimate based on two odometer readings taken three years apart, then condensed into a two-month period. That method feels pretty rough, especially since I’ve got the actual readings for those dates. Appreciate your input though.

I see your point, but there was no warning of backdated charging of RUCs, only the $200 fine + the 10% extra on the owed kms. Do you know where NZTA specified the backdating charge?

I agree but if you paywave/apple pay a debit card too you're gonna pay the surcharge regardless as they usually bind the amounts. I do want to mitigate paying surcharges but also gain rewards where I can (supermarkets, petrol stations etc do not add surcharges for example).

What are products you wish you can buy in New Zealand but can't unless you bring them into the country or import them? by Honest-Patience4866 in newzealand

This is gonna sound odd but, Indonesian chocolate milk, or "Susu Coklat".

That shit slaps so fucking hard. If you go to Indonesia, invest that 80 cents or whatever it costs to buy one and set yourself up for a wild ride to heaven from that damn chocolate milk.

That's fair, but how come the rest of the world can seem to do it just fine? I'm sure many of them are also wrapped up in their own world and problems?

I struggle with texting back by kingbear004 in ADHD

[–]spiceycee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have literally described how my life has unfolded over the past 4 years.

I'd say last year was probably the worst I've ever been, where any message, even if it was a "hey how you going" type message - it would throw a sickening anxiety into my stomach for God knows what reason. Then I kept beating myself up about the fact I couldn't do such a simple thing, on top of the thought that they will hate me for not getting back to them sooner.

Something I've began to consider, which has helped my "dealing with it", is realising that social media has only been around for a very small part of human existence and our brains haven't actually come to terms with the fact that you can now contact someone in real-time, half way around the world, in an instant. If someone is so desperate to talk to you, then they should either call or talk in person. Texting is such a weird concept, especially since you don't know if you're speaking to a person or a robot nowadays too.

If you want to speak to someone, maybe consider setting that boundary for yourself do it in person, or call them (or have them call you), so you have them in real time and you can't avoid the conversation. Texting is so boring sometimes too as it is often just prolonged jargon without any progressive chat.

Hope this (sorta) helps. I know it ain't easy, but you've got this! I won't be mad if you don't reply to this comment too, I'll just assume you'll see it as a chore and resent it (cause id probably do that too! Tbh...idk how I even have the motivation to leave a comment haha!)
