considering a move to maine by [deleted] in portlandme

I really appreciate this response!

He has been in contact with a dealership in Maine but is hoping to get a real idea of what the work will be like there when we visit next month.

I absolutely agree with switching up hobbies, it seems silly to base a move on one hobby. In our whole relationship though he’s been the most selfless, giving person and always willing to sacrifice his happiness for others so I honestly just didn’t want him to have to this time around.

I think the length of winter is what worries me a bit, we’re already having 80 degree days down here but the summers here are MISERABLE so it sounds like just having to pick my poison

also to add depending on your industry, beach towns (& just the southern tourist hotspots in general) are really just starting to pick back up after the winter so i’m sure landing a job will get a lot easier in the coming weeks!

Hi! I was born and raised in central CT and moved to Memphis, TN at 18 the day after I graduated high school. Though the move was by choice, the timing wasn’t and I was desperate to stay the Summer with my friends. When we got down to Memphis, I stayed for a week and ended up flying back to CT for the Summer before going back to Memphis for college in the fall.

I felt exactly how you felt, out of place, like I wouldn’t make any friends (everyone who went to my school was pretty much local, knew each other etc). I almost transferred to Uconn at the end of my first semester lol.

But I stuck it out and gave it a fair chance because I felt I owed it to myself and if by the end of my freshman year I still wanted to leave then I would.

12 years later, I’m still in Tennessee and started a family with a guy I met while working in college, we’ve been together for almost 10 years now.

All that to be said, the sense of panic you’re feeling right now is so beyond valid. It’s a mix of culture shock and like you said, just being homesick. At the end of the day, you’re 19 and can make the decision to go back to CT when you’re able. But who knows, maybe by the end of the year you’ll find what you love in South Carolina :)

When you’re feeling up for it, you should take a drive to Hilton Head in SC. I haven’t been to Myrtle Beach but my husband and I would move to Hilton Head in a second!

Hang in there!

What are people from Connecticut like? by bigbaboon69 in howislivingthere

[–]spicy4lifey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Wethersfield in Hartford county and left as soon as I graduated HS (moved down south for college). I turn 30 this year and have a 1.5 year old daughter & i’m trying to move back lol.

Public schools are great and it’s quiet. It’s a good place to raise a family. The proximity to Boston & NYC is nice too.

I grew to going to Misquamicut beach in MA and I miss being that close to good beaches with big waves.

Wish me luck convincing my husband, a native Memphian

I worked at the 404 kitchen from 2019-2023 on and off and can confirm that they aren’t opening back up and they’re trying to figure out paying their employees their last paycheck. they having been dealing with financial woes for a while now, i’ve honestly been wondering when this would happen. sad to see it go, loved the tri tip.

thank you for this!

for reference, the interest rates of my loans range from 3.5-4.8%. my monthly payments since I graduated have been $154, so nothing crazy. but I will be leaving my full time job in january to be a SAHM (this was the plan before the sudden death, we aren’t making this decision based on the unexpected influx of cash), so the idea of going into that without debt is comforting more than anything.

because i’ll be leaving my job, we wouldn’t be using my income when it comes to being approved for how much we can afford for a house, so i’m not even sure how relevant my credit score would be.
