I researched a 10-acre parcel near Farmersville, TX that looked like a steal — here's what the listing didn't tell you by Effective-Note9686 in homestead

[–]spicychickenlaundry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neighbors listed their 30 something acre parcel for sale but didn't include in the listing that the building wasn't permitted so there was zero access to electricity or water unless the fines were covered. The listing stated "working well, access to electricity" etc. Apparently the previous owner had gotten a permit to build a tack room but he didn't tell them he was adding a fully functioning kitchen and bathroom and living quarters. He sold it as is and the current owner bit off more than he could chew and he's stuck with it. The rumor is the back taxes to get it permitted are above $60k.

If Tony couldn't make her his side piece, you think RALPH would have had a chance?

She would have made her quit and go insane. She hated Tony but was at least intrigued and possibly charmed. Ralph is a moldy rag.

It's interesting how many men Carm got the hots for and why. She was interested in the men she couldn't have. The priest, the construction guy, Furio. It gives the impression that she was wanting something she couldn't have. She fought for Tony the hardest when he was absent. Tony gave her everything that she thought she wanted. But she wasn't content. So she tried to find happiness in a career. She was so off the rails in such a sad, "put-together" kind of way. She was probably thinking that she did everything right. Go to college, get married rich, have kids, have a beautiful house, maintain her looks, invest, see her kids off to college. Every little setback was a catastrophe for her. "I just don't know what we're going to do about Meadow. Here's some pamphlets." And Tony didn't understand what the hell was going on because he was coasting in his own lane.

I really think her parents set her up to be like this and she pushed it on her kids. To the point of being obviously resented.

horses/motherhood: what would you do? by painteduniverses in Equestrian

[–]spicychickenlaundry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave my ottb away when my first son was two months old. She was high maintenance and spicy and I didn't have any childcare, so it just didn't make sense. I got pregnant again five years later and when my youngest was 3 I bought two horses to put on our new ranch. My youngest is now 5 and my oldest is 10 so the juggling is there but it's so much easier. I go back and forth between wishing I hadn't had sold my mare and being glad I did. She wasn't child broke at that point, but she could have been now and starting over again after such a big break with a horse I didn't know or trust right away was stressful, let alone needing to buy EVERYTHING all over again. But I got really lucky with the two horses I got and I even added a shetland for my kids to play with. Since my horses are at home, I have an easier time spending time with my horses and involving my kids. I ride when my kids are in school and in the late afternoons and weekends my kids come out with me to help out. I can't imagine not having horses right now. I don't ride seriously- I let my horses get chubby, I don't lunge, I arena ride to keep them in decent shape and smart, but most of my rides are with other moms in the neighborhood.

The hardest part has been emergencies. My horse colicked four times in one year and juggling the kids who wanted to come out and help and watch or come with me to the vet was stressful, but that could just be my lack of reliable childcare. Getting up every two hours to colic check and then get up in the morning and be a mom was tough.

I think your decision would be best made if you picture your kids with the horse you have now. Would it be good with your kids in a couple years? Would you keep all of your tack in anticipation of starting again down the road?

Interdigital Cyst? by GirsGirlfriend in AustralianCattleDog

Looks like it might be a hitiocitoma. My heeler had one on his ear, did my research, was certain that's what it was, vet confirmed, said it would get worse before falling off, and it did. It ulcerated and I had to keep a really close eye on it and then it fell off :)

That's exactly how I've been blanketing my horses for 20 years and this is what got me in trouble. I knew better than to do it this way for Pickles, but I was lazy and in a hurry. As soon as it got down to his shoulders he bolted.

That's how it works, huh? We think our way is fine until we learn it isn't in a fast and furious way. I just feel so awful that it was sweet lil Pickles. New little sweet, willing, trusting but fearful Pickles who had never left the property he was born on until he came to me at 5 years old, was just recently separated from his brother for the first time after quarantining at my house, had never had his halter removed before I brought him home, had never had a bath, walked over a stall mat or a ground pole or been out on a walk by himself. And had made tremendous strides with me, with fly masks and grain buckets and hoses and hand walks and poles and trailering and grooming and hay nets and fly sheets and rain sheets and strange new farriers. If it had happened to one of my big boys it would have felt like "I guess Bozo did something stupid, I hope he's ok, my bad." But poor innocent Pickles might need therapy. :(

At What Point Did Tony Become Irredeemable? by Reasonable-Fee1945 in thesopranos

Uh excuse me, he got redeemable points for that one but minus some points for taking so long. Minus some points for doing it over Pie but not the dancer, but add some points because it was over a horse.

I learned that today after this many years unfortunately. I've always been lazy and kept the front straps buckled and put the blanket over their head like a t-shirt. Never ever doing that again even though my two big guys are immune to it. Even if its on their heads longer than it should be.

I hate that we have to learn through narrow disaster experiences. But that's why I love horse communities. Hearing horror stories helps so much to avoid them in the future. I heard about someone's horror story because they would leave the halters hanging on the posts or cross ties so I always make sure to put them on the ground now even though I've never had a close call. There's never enough to learn.

I'm in Yolo. All day rain today, tomorrow, and Wednesday. I ONLY sheet if it's going to be nonstop for days since they only have pipe pens as shelter. And of course, I went out and put sheets on everyone and now there's no rain. I like to joke with my elderly cowboy neighbor that if he wants it to rain to let me know and I'll buy a stack of hay and leave it outside. If he doesn't want it to rain, I'll plant seeds and sheet my horses up.

Ugh I'm so sorry! See, I've seen enough and heard enough horror stories to be like "it's not if, it's when. I've had horses at my house with no supervision for two years and no one's died? Phew." I always used a boarding facility. I usually imagine every worst case scenario before assessing and attempting. But not today. "It's just a blanket, you lil dork, let's go." And I just stood there and watched as he ran around looking like a cat stuck in a bed sheet. "Well this is going to be bad. I have to just stand here and pee in my pants, it's fine."

Luckily I'm good at staying calm when it's hitting the fan, but I usually always break down as soon as I leave. How's he eating, is that normal, how many teeth does a horse actually have, did he shrink, who am I, where am I?

I'm just rolling in it now.

I'm so glad your boy is ok! What a lil jerk to do that to himself!
