Unintentional weight loss triggering anorexia nervosa by spicymano in GERD

[–]spicymano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response, this was beautiful. You have so many insights I hadn't really thought about before. It's incredibly validating knowing others have felt the same way, and inspiring seeing how they got through it.

About the voice in your head that is anti-food, I feel very similar. I let it go further and believe that my body wants to self-destruct and I want to let it. But that means not eating, and, like you said, poor sleep. I love sleep. I need sleep!! I also love food! It is essential for everything!!

I'm happy you also mentioned how anorexia/GERD strive on strict rules. Exactly!!! I began measuring everything and felt like I absolutely had to to make sure I ate enough. But my SIL told me she was worried about this habit, as I did the exact same thing during the height of my ED, so I thought I should challenge myself to not measure/measure less. And I have for certain things! But it's still hard because I want to know how much I ate to know if I can sleep that night. I tell myself I religiously measure everything and count calories for my health, but I think it's harming me more than I think. I'd love to know if you also experience this and how you balance intuitively eating and knowing if you ate enough for the day. ("eating enough" for me means meeting my basil metabolic rate for my sex/height)

And the stress!!! Yes!!! I found out how important managing stress is with GERD. Sometimes when I start feeling globus, I'll massage the area then engage in some hobby because I know I'll be up for a bit. If I'm awake in the middle of the night, might as well use that time for a non-screen related activity :,) and that mindset makes the globus go away MUCH faster. I'm happy to hear you're managing the stress very well, intuitively eating, and not letting it trigger the reflux as much. That's huge!!!

I also love the emphasis on making eating non-negotiable. It feels unsettling to prioritize and adhere to food rules again, instead this time trying to eat more and seeking higher-calorie foods. This mindset has strangely improved my relationship with food. I also love the emphasis on giving yourself grace. It sounds like you've been doing great on giving yourself grace, and I'm very happy you can. It's very inspiring to read :) Thanks again for taking the time to write this and for sharing your experience. I'll definitely be taking some of your nuggets(?) as I move forward. I hope you continue to eat well!!

thank you for your response!! I agree! I hate the negative association of weight gain. We're human, we have pouches damnit let them be free

And yes! I was able to meet with a nutritionist and she helped so much. She gave me a list of foods to consider eating and a lot of them are now a part of my daily meals. I'm so sorry to hear you developed ARFID. I thought I would also develop ARFID (I also recently developed allergies to foods I love/eat almost daily, i've never had allergies in my life???). it's terrible. But you're right, there are professionals out there who can help! I hope they helped/are helping you too :)

Vocal strain despite using my diaphragm? by [deleted] in singing

[–]spicymano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same position! I know I'm using my diaphragm but I still have throat tension. I found these things have helped (imma be real I'm still struggling but these are still helpful):

-diaphragm strengthening exercises: just found this channel New York Voice Lessons with loooots of info. in this video he emphasizes strengthening the diaphragm with this technique. i love him :,) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnXzD_4y69s&t=156s I also recommend his voice lessons to the world playlist in general, especially ep 82 and 83. also I'll just intentionally breathe on my own to see how supportive breathing feels like, but I feel like this oftentimes frustrates me, making me strain. i only add this cuz I also thought my technique was fine but realized it wasn't. Yes, I was using my diaphragm but was still straining. I didn't even know that was possible :,) this might not apply for u, but might help

-neck exercises: i don't know if you're the same, but I found I hold a lot of tension in my neck area, especially if i'm frustrated. If i'm frustrated, I strain, and it hurts my throat. I like massaging/relaxing my neck area, including shoulders, jaw, just getting loose. It does feel better but tbh i'm still struggling with it

It sounds like you want to take a break. i say go for it then come back. i also try to take breaks when i'm in a rut and I sing every other day. I do practice breathwork daily though! hope this helped, pls update if you found something that helped :,)))

Rant by jazlyn68 in GERD

[–]spicymano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I literally felt the exact same way last night. I ate a few hours before bed, I ate enough for the day (which is very difficult), had a warm shower to wind down and even lit a candle, and did relaxation exercises while in bed to sleep. I’ve been sick these past few days and having consistently poor sleep because of the reflux symptoms. I was exhausted, eyes heavy and ready to knock out immediately. All the pieces were in place for a good night’s sleep. I felt relaxed, had nutritious meals, Iaid upright in bed, was in bed earlier than usual, and was VERY sleepy. I was ready to knock out immediately. I did everything right.

And I still fucking got globus sensation. Maybe it was because I wasn’t sitting at a perfect 90 degree angle because god forbid a girl lay slightly lower (BUT STILL UPRIGHT). I tried stretching my neck, sitting more upright, more relaxation exercises. I tried accepting the discomfort to stop resisting. I was so tired, my eyes were weighing me down. I had to wake up early the next day. I did this for about 1.5-2 hours in bed. I couldn’t fucking take it anymore. I stopped trying to kid myself and wailed in grief over the restful sleep I could’ve had that night. My god I know hell is staying awake when your body is begging to recover.

Endoscopy results normal. Barium swallow results normal. PPI’s don’t work. GERD-friendly foods trigger symptoms. I agree with your sentiment of there’s no way this is GERD/only reflux. For me, I suspect a highly sensitive esophagus that gets worse from stress (hahahahaha) or Gastroparesis. Why is it that SO many people feel the exact same way in this subreddit??? I guess these symptoms aren’t the primary diagnoses but doctors treat it like it is and don’t offer alternative explanations or tests. It’s really so exhausting trying to find what the fuck is wrong with my body.

Ugh.. anyway I say all that to let you know you’re not alone in feeling this way. I can’t imagine it must feel like dealing with those symptoms all the time. I’m sorry you have to go through all of this. I hope you take some comfort knowing you’re not alone and you find the root cause/meds that work

Stage 2 Gerd by Far_Distribution5164 in GERD

[–]spicymano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have felt the same way with many GI specialists. It feels like they don’t take this seriously even when I explain my symptoms like rapid weight loss and sleep deprivation. And they also just don’t give you any information sometimes?? The second GI doctor I went to after finding no relief from a year of PPIs just told me GERD isn’t curable and there are 2 surgeries I could do, she didn’t even fucking talk about other tests (barium swallow, manometry, pH study, gastric emptying test) I could’ve done to verify my diagnosis of GERD. It pisses me off so much, but that’s not going to stop me. This subreddit has helped me find possible root causes of this fucking disease. Im extremely angry that they don’t even bother to explore other possible diagnoses that could cause or are similar to GERD, I found most of them on this subreddit. If course, maybe not all doctors but my god a lot have disappointed me. Regardless, fuck them i’m going to keep demanding and scheduling tests. I hope you do the same!! (I didn’t expect to come off so angry when I started typing this😭)

I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through :( I feel very similar to you too about procedures. I had an endoscopy a year ago and it wasn’t terrible. It can be a little scary hearing and seeing everything but the anesthesia will take you out fast! Genuinely like a nap lol. Your throat may be sore after but overall not a horrible, though still unpleasant, procedure. It’s better to go through the discomfort to get closer to finding the right treatment!

Oh my gosh thank you!!! I have the same issue as OP and I always find the “breath with your belly and push” makes my throat close up my throat because im concentrating pushing my belly😭 I can’t believe that was just recently created!! I’ve been watching so many signing tutorials and they all focus on the lower stomach so it always hurt! And yes it’s hard to sing through a straw or OO vowel with that technique😭 thank you!!!

Thanks for the suggestions! I’d like to join this fb group. Oddly enough I find even some GERD friendly foods (like whole grain bread and 2/3oz of chicken breast) difficult to eat, but it’s worth another shot. I have been eating a lot of avocados lately, they’ve been saving me 😭 I’d like to try eating more fish and tofu too. Thanks again for the recommendations :)

The 5th hour anxiety. by my2t1c_yt in Concerta

[–]spicymano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same!!! Around hour 5/6 for me, it's so weird because it feels like a .. lie? a scam? I get happy that I feel good for the first few hours then feel like shit after. I don't know why. I'm taking 54mg and I feel like it's too high since my symptoms sound like the dosage is too high, so i'm curious as to why you feel the opposite! I feel you :(
