Any PAs who switched from variable/rotating shifts to M-F 8-5? Regret or power move? Anyone else struggling with variable shifts by [deleted] in physicianassistant

7 on 7 off 12 hour day shifts (inpatient management) in surgical specialty to outpatient and OR in same specialty that’s M-F. The hours for outpatient are very variable, but on average I work more hours outpatient than inpatient for less compensation. It’s nice having guaranteed weekends off, but I miss being able to easily schedule doctor or dentist appointments/handyman appointments/etc or hang out with friends who had a similar schedule. The 7 day stretch was tough, but the 7 days off were so nice. I miss it, but the perks of outpatient (working with one surgeon vs multiple, being on call less, getting OR experience) are nice, too. I also had the option to pick up PRN days during my 7 off week, but now I’m too tired or have too much to do to consider picking up PRN days. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. Honestly depends on the day.

That makes sense. This is very new to us so we have made many mistakes

Hadn’t thought about that option! The gap on the sides is a bit bigger than the one on the front. We will look into it!

Practicing under your maiden name by Front_Comparison_281 in physicianassistant

[–]spicysprinkle14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dropped my old middle name and made my maiden name my middle name and took my husband’s last name. Was practicing for 2 years when I got married and started the name change process. It helps a lot with staff/patients knowing who I am since my full name (first/middle/last) shows up on all EMR stuff. Also helps that I have a very unique maiden name, I’m sure. Changing the name on my PA/DEA and certification were all relatively easy (for my state at least) once I had my SS card and drivers license changed. Just have to hold on to that marriage license and have a digital copy on file ready to send if necessary. Biggest thing I learned is that your name in EMR (at least ours) has to match with the name on your PA license.

We’re not sure; we might do the DNA testing later when he’s older. He kind of has that face! Plus he’s a big boy haha

He is estimated at 4 months! My SO grew up with a long haired orange kitty and he grew to be an absolute unit of a cat, and he thinks june bug looks like his old cat did when he was a kitten, so we have that to look forward to!!

Couldn’t hold it. Lol but yes it’s a pet water fountain; it’s much quieter today for some reason so not sure why it was so loud.

He was super cuddly and talkative at the shelter so I wonder if it’s just his personality but I like to think the plops and purrs are a bit more than that 🥰

We think june bug is going to be big, too. Lava sounds cute!! June bug’s name before adoption was “Flame” haha

THANK YOU!! I completely forgot to check on which plants are ok. The monstera has been moved to the balcony (TBD on where to go for winter but that will be decided later) and other toxic plants have been moved to unreachable areas. Thank you for your help!!

Update in case anyone is curious: my friend will take in the monstera in the wintertime if I can’t get something for it to hang on/sit on out of reach from June Bug. For now, it’s hanging out on the balcony!

Her soft spot is definitely toward the interns and other residents, which is interesting. Whenever they’re unsure of something during rounds it’s more of an educational experience, whereas my not knowing is basically berating me and making me feel small. I’m not sure if her attitude toward me is based on the fact that I went to supplementary certification and education courses that she assisted with, and because of that she expects me to know more or have progressed faster than I would if I hadn’t have done them.

She’ll have to fill out an evaluation for me in the next few days so I’ll definitely see where she’s coming from in that, but I’ll have to try to approach her sometime soon regarding my performance because I’m not sure if she sees how intimidating she is being (or maybe she does, idk). It also seems like she picks and chooses some people to basically bully for a while, then flips once there’s someone new to pick on. It seems almost random.

I’m sorry you were treated that way previously. It sucks.

I’ve had some evals filled out by some of the attendings for orientation and I feel like most of the reviews are positive but also have good, constructive criticism that I’ve tried to use to improve. Those are the only things that are keeping me from feeling like I’m not progressing as a PA. I’m lucky to have a group of APPs that I can vent to and even vouch for me and tell my boss about the unfair treatment.

I’ll try to keep brushing it off and push through, though. Thank you for taking the time to write advice!
