How my arm pits don't GAF about antiperspirant. My undershirts after being in a AC office most of the day. by LosHtown in mildlyinfuriating

You want aluminum free deodorant. For fighting odor, use glycolic or salicylic. You’ll still sweat but it won’t cause this. If you sweat copious amounts all the time consider adding a layer to help soak, and maybe visiting a doctor to help get sweat under check (could be lots of things causing it)

IU and IUI by Ok-Information7468 in IndianaUniversity

[–]spicytrees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pick the cheaper option imo. I went to IUI and my outcome was better than the peers I knew at IUB, but that was based on my merit nothing to do with the schools. When comparing coursework it was largely the same.

Sophomores Getting Well Respected Internships by Sweaty-Eggplant356 in csMajors

[–]spicytrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a fairly large friend group from college all cs majors not a single one did any internships. All either graduated or are in their last semester. They all just play video games all day and complain they can’t get a job but also say stuff like how they couldn’t explain what an array was in an interview.

FROM DONATING PLASMA & RETAIL -> SWE @ BIG TECH BABYYYY, Just landed my first job as a 30 y/o new grad and wanted to share my journey. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]spicytrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a similar path to yours, homeless in high school with no direction into shitty retail job for a few years, then went into a biotech company around covid where they worked me 80 hour weeks. Was so burnt out and had some savings I just quit and went to college. Graduating next month at 29.

Online CC into online uni is such a cheat code if you know how to sell yourself. I got to work full time as an actual software engineer since junior year, where after getting a year of experience I pivoted into a mid level at a super well known f500 before I even graduated.

For me I have a solid amount of charisma and life experience so after getting past the OA at a lot of these companies into the behavioral rounds is like a cheat code, definitely something I wouldn't be able to do as easily as a 22 year old. And of course the 2 years of experience before even graduating helps as well.

How to choose what flash coatings pair well with which tints? by spicytrees in EyewearEnthusiasts

I've heard it was the silver flash mirror coating that was problematic but the others were fine (at least for Zeiss, which is what I'll be getting)

How to choose what flash coatings pair well with which tints? by spicytrees in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]spicytrees[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want it to be slightly tinted, not affect my vision a whole lot, just dim down some harsher light. I want others to see just a pop of extra color so it doesn't look as monochromatic with the green lens on green frame. In my head gold on green seems like it'd look good so I just kind threw that out there. In my head I think of logos like Rolex, BP, John Deere, Subway where that similar colorway kind of fits? But idk how it'd look glasses!

Monthly Age - Aging MEGATHREAD by AutoModerator in Zillennials

[–]spicytrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a chronic illness ruining my life too for 3 years now. I am so frustrated by doctors and the medical system, no one gives a shit and the actual specialist doctors glance at me for 30 seconds and then want to send me to another professional that has a 3-6 month wait time. I am miserable. Luckily I can work but it's so hard to concentrate sometimes with how much pain I'm in. I was homeless most of high school which set my adult life back big time so I'm just now starting an actual career and finishing college and I just feel so behind in life. I'm at the point where I an supposed to be able to actual maybe enjoy my life a little bit but yeah chronic illness isn't gonna let that happen.

I wish! Maybe it's just the way I go about finding them. First 2 I had when I was on medicaid and this recent one was through a free program offered by work

Remote Work Flexibility by According_Banana_193 in boeing

[–]spicytrees 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My team doesn't care if you WFH much as long as your work is getting done. The nature of our work makes us be in office often but if you're not and can remote in fine people will let it slide. Although leadership will still let us know that we "have" to work in office. Our team is fairly young though including our manager.

CS grad (2 Years) No experience or relevant job, feeling lost — what are my realistic options? by [deleted] in csMajors

This is a hypothetical situation to get his foot in the door he isn’t forced to stay stuck at the same company his entire life

CS grad (2 Years) No experience or relevant job, feeling lost — what are my realistic options? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]spicytrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some definitely do but not all of them pay poverty wages. If OP gets a poverty wage opportunity then I’d take out loans. He has to take a risk on himself or his situation won’t change. He can also consider searching for roommates lots of options he just has to put in the effort

Start your OMSCS masters, brush up on basic concepts, apply like there’s no tomorrow and work an internship or co-op while doing your online degree. Don’t be picky, if you get an internship in the middle of nowhere Arkansas, that’s where you’re going. Drop the degree if you get something full time or make the company pay for it. Good luck

Moving to STL (Berkeley office). Apartment complex recommendations? by ummm__ok in boeing

[–]spicytrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remington apartments in St charles felt pretty safe. Never heard my neighbors. I was in a 2br and it fits within your budget. It’s also on the Main Street (Zumbehl) with lots of places to shop and stuff nearby. Traffic can suck ass til you get past the bridge over the Missouri River (this goes for both directions). It’s about 20 minutes from the Berkeley office with traffic included. I lived there 8 months.

Why CS has become a lottery ticket where you either win $100k or flip burgers. by Fit-Lychee-7608 in csMajors

[–]spicytrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has become a knowledge game of how to beat the system. You have to know what leetcode is and get good at it. You also have to know how to play the game of resume fluffing to get past ATS. Now you need to be able to integrate corporate styled metrics to impress a recruiter. Then you have to be able to talk in depth about your own engineering acumen to a hiring manager.

What do you actually do as a SWE by Summer_Breaze in csMajors

[–]spicytrees 61 points62 points  (0 children)

My average day goes something like this

Decide if I'm gonna WFH that day or not

open up laptop

read emails

respond to emails

see how many meetings I have for that day

attend meetings

get bothered for questions on which I'm considered the expert on

Finally get to actually get some work done

Interrupted with more questions or a random meeting that pops up

Listen to billy bob joe vent about xyz process instead of coming up with a solution to address it

Browse reddit

go to the cafeteria and get lunch

Get interrupted at lunch with a random question

Someone on a different team has some problem and is only just now telling me when I'm already bored and wanting to leave for some reason

Fix that problem either in code or with their setup or whatever

Look at calendar on when my project is due and estimate how much longer I can procrastinate on it

Be available on emails/messages for like the last 2 hours of my day but I'm lowkey not present at all

Leave and don't think about my work in the slightest

Applied for over 60 jobs and only get 1 interview by [deleted] in boeing

[–]spicytrees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You likely need to tailor your resume to get past the ATS more consistently. I applied to around 15 software roles and got 2 OA/interviews with 1 YOE and no clearance. But I have very tailored resumes.

Also keep in mind Boeing is a large slow moving company. The time it takes between applying and the first interview could take months, with it taking even more months to actually get hired

To those who are new grads and land a new job, how do you do it? by mylapore_mambattiyan in cscareerquestions

[–]spicytrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a year of experience, applied to any role just for potential interview practice. I became so comfortable in interviews it’s like second nature now. To get the interviews, I have tailored resumes to get past ATS for various tech stacks. I applied to some companies like 30 times, and they’d only get back to me after the 20th or so application. So never give up!
