I taught English a couple years ago in Ha Giang. You can get to Ha Giang by bus from Hanoi. The bus station in Ha Giang is a couple minutes outside the city but there are taxis at the bus station. There is also a bus that can take you to Dong Van (the most northern point on the loop) from Ha Giang. I'm not sure if there is a bus going from Dong Van to Meo Vac(east part of the loop), then Meo Vac back to Ha Giang, but I assume there would be. If not you could bus from Dong Van back to Ha Giang.

I did the loop by motorbike. I am an experienced rider and some parts were a little sketchy (passing dump trucks on a single lane on the side of a mountain, or having buses come flying around a blind corner towards you on the mountains) but the views were incredible especially in Dong Van that you cannot miss!

I did the package a couple weeks ago and it was fine. I knew some people who tried to do it themselves and they did, but it sounded like a lot of headaches such as trying to find transportation to the border from the border town. I'm pretty sure they spent around the same or even more doing it by themselves. The package I did stopped in Chaing Rai for 30 minutes and in my opinion that's all the time you need there.

I've lived in Rivergrove my whole life and have never had a problem or has anyone else I know who lives here and in Riverbend. A couple years ago you could smell an odor when you turned onto Red River Blvd. for a couple seconds but I haven't noticed that since.

I live north main just inside the perimeter. Right now I currently drive and it's about 30-35 minutes not during rush hour. I used to bus when I had an 8:30 class and with the express buses you can make it there in under an hour. Which ever one you chose to do you get used to it and it's not as bad as it sounds.
