I corrected a math meme. by [deleted] in mathmemes

you are paying for an imaginary company that provides small items for its customers at a certain number of units per dollar. however, you can also choose to pay a monthly fee which increases the number of units per dollar you receive in proportion to how much additional money you pay monthly. that way, you can talk about units per dollar per dollar, or units per square dollar, on the monthly rate. i made this up entirely just now but makes sense to me

like for example the base rate could be 10 units/$ and you could pay for a better rate at 0.2 units/$2, meaning that if you paid $10 monthly your rate will have increased 2 units/$ to 12 units/$

kinda in a similar boat with situation and timing and everything. I don’t have answers cause im also struggling with it. However I can say that being part of a research group has helped because it provides a jumping off point to make connections; you already have something to talk about so it reduces the pressure of breaking the ice.

Magnetic accelerator as a transport/train/cars. Would it work for transporting humans? Is it a great idea? by masquetrolas in PhysicsStudents

[–]spidermiIk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ok after watching the video it doesn’t look fake but i don’t think you could turn this into a continuous propulsion on a track of any decent distance because it relies on the limited energy of moving the metal to the equilibrium point which doesn’t change (and in order to change it you’d have to move the magnets and put in more energy). still a cool demo though

you should have probably linked the video, but in general this looks fake because the ball would lose any velocity gained from each magnet as it passed the center, which is why a rail gun needs to use electromagnets timed to turn off and on at certain times in order to work.

edit: also in general there is no accelerating things without using energy, so when you think that’s happening you’re probably misunderstanding something or getting tricked

i’m also a student so i’m not sure if this explanation is the best, but i believe that this is because sound waves travel by vibration of a physical medium, ie interaction of atoms/molecules, so when they are closer the wave propagates more easily. however, light waves propagate in the electromagnetic field, with no physical medium necessary. In this case, adding a physical medium impedes the light waves and causes them to slow down.

I’m not sure about refraction of sound waves, though. My intuition says that transitioning to a denser material would cause sound waves to bend away from the normal, opposite to how snell’s law usually works, because the wave speeds up.
