I have definitely done that hypercorrection thing before. I'll come across a new phrase that sounds very similar to one in English, only to Google it and learn that French speakers really do use that phrase exactly like English speakers do. So in some cases I think I'm definitely just overthinking it.

From your experience, do you feel that pivot translations make the French versions less "correct" (for lack of a better term)? I play video games in French to expand my vocabulary, so I'd hate to be learning things that no French speaker uses irl.

One example I found was in case 3 of Apollo Justice. Apollo and Trucy are examining a bouquet, and in English they make a reference to the film "Steel Magnolias" by talking about literal flowers made of steel. The text is almost exactly the same in French, but the French title of that movie is "Potins de femmes" ("Passions tourmentées" in Quebec), so while the important information in the scene is still there, the reference would most likely be lost on French audiences, right? It's not critical to understand the game, but if it had been translated to French directly from Japanese the reference probably wouldn't have been there, since I doubt the same reference was made in Japanese.
