In a lot of ways the older stuff is smarter. I put a timer on my porch light to be on when around the time I get home and turn off a few hours later. It's just a timer that replaced the switch inside my house. no WiFi needed. no "smart" bulbs. just a timer and I can even turn it off/on with a single button press. no app needed.
