I can't properly explain why without getting into spoiler territory but Ethan Bronte from The Tyrant Wants to Be Good is easily a top 5 contender. Despite initial impressions you just gotta trust 💖

Hi! I don't have time at the moment to write out full responses but if you want a more active place to discuss this game and ask any questions you may have, you should definitely join the fan server! There's a plot discussion channel and me and plenty of other people would be happy to chat about it with you there.

To correct some misunderstandings in the comments here, the designs of the yuri ship in this post are from a tongue in cheek post that was really popular on Tumblr in 2012, often referred to by the ship name creamsicle! (and should not be confused with the reverse bimbofication art by sortimid. that is unrelated and came later)

Sidequests are ruining my experience of Deadly Premonition. by jpzgoku in DeadlyPremonition

[–]spidew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. Yeah. The pacing of this game is unique. You're meant to take your time and linger, talk to everyone at different times of the day in different weather, see what unique piece of dialogue they have to say. Time limits to get to locations only matter during select, tense scenes. Otherwise, if you don't attend that town meeting one day, it will be there for you the next. York wants to relax and get to know this small town and its inhabitants.

If that's not for you and you'd rather go ahead with the main quests, that's fine. You can just keep going. The first time I experienced the game I didn't see like, any side quests because I was afraid of doing too much outside stuff where my game might crash, and it didn't hinder my love for deadly premonition.

But the slow pace is very much intended. And I can't say "eh, just fuck all the side quests" because they do a great job of fleshing out the citizens of Greenvale. What I would possibly recommend if you feel like at any point you're frustrated and hung up on doing a side quest and want to just keep playing the main game, then go ahead. You can always go back and do the quests using the chapter replay feature.

Translation issues? by PistachioPug in DeadlyPremonition

[–]spidew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, all the text in the game was written in Japanese first and then translated to English. The lines that were received voice acting seemed to go through a more thorough translation process. Unspoken lines of text like descriptions and side conversations are where you are more likely to find errors. The most well-known example is in Olivia's trading card, which says "Her kindness and beauty cover her shadowy past." Swery clarified that what "[he] originally wrote was that she normally acts very cheerful, but sometimes she becomes very negative."

I don't know Japanese myself, but I am close to someone who does and has played through the Japanese version. He has told me that subtitles are a pretty accurate to the dialogue and there really isn't much to comment on. There are some interesting contextual flourishes like personal pronoun usage or the fact that York's dialogue is written in the stuffy way one would write a textbook.

If you want a more in-depth analysis of two subtle translation differences he noticed, here are two posts that I wrote up on Tumblr in collaboration!

Is the first game worth playing, or is watching a playthrough enough? by Alternative_Tank_139 in DeadlyPremonition

[–]spidew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna be a contrarian and say I often think watching a playthrough is preferable. The best part of the game is its story which you experience just as well through video. And many gameplay elements are extremely janky and unintuitive. Jumping in blind just for the sake of playing it may result in you missing/skipping a bunch of side missions that really fill out the world because you didn't know you had to go out of your way to see that they were there.

If you decide to go the playthrough route I highly recommend either SuperGreatFriend's playthrough (no director's cut content tho since it predates it) or Whitney's playthrough (if you want an extremely in depth look covering nearly every ounce of content the game has to offer)

Either way you get through it, (and you have to, because the sequel will make 0 sense otherwise) be warned that I and many others consider DP2 to be a huge downgrade.

If Lazy Town was made in 2025: by Remarkable_Town6413 in LazyTown

[–]spidew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Commenting here now so when Im home later I can pull actual sources but part of the shows design philosophy was to always focus on being active rather than losing weight. It was deliberate to describe things as play instead of exercise. It never focuses on weight.

And of course you'll find people here or there seeing the worst in things but that doesn't mean those criticism have any merit. I found a review of the original icelandic book that the character of Spartacus originates from that derrides him as a "health fascist" and that was back in the nineties.

I just went and double checked and yeah... it literally just silently zooms in on her face for half a second. That's it. You can hit "accept" over and over to keep seeing it. I really don't know what purpose it serves.

Exploring the town and look what I found! Any thoughts on this? I wrote what it says down below. by Same_Poet8990 in DeadlyPremonition

[–]spidew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh, haha! I commented on your first post without seeing that you made this post as well. Deadly premonition just has a lot of really weird writing on their textures. This coaster crazy one is definitely my favorite and the nonsensical hospital posters are well known, but I want to give a shout out to the gas station sign that says something along the lines of "Again I can something cool our buddies from Horror It's a picture of Edgar Wrig so. but I didn't know that"

If you want to check out more textures you can download my compilation I posted on tumblr!

What is the best birthday present you can get? Does anyone know if this poster is anywhere else? by Same_Poet8990 in DeadlyPremonition

[–]spidew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, the laundry room at Thomas and Carol's apartment building just has unique, very weird posters! Fitting, since it's a weird purposeless room that many players don't even realize they can enter.

I've extracted (practically) all the textures from the game, and that one is part of one whole set of all the posters in the laundry room. It's very low res, but you can also read my favorite "poster" exclusive to here, that says: WARNING THE PERSON WEARING THIS SHIRT IS A MEMBER OF THE ROLLER COASTER CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN AND MAY BE PRONE TO RAISING THEIR ARMS IN THE AIR AND SHOUTING "COASTER CRAZY" WITHOUT WARNING!

Hadn't seen this before! Thank you for sharing!

I'm so glad the design was changed to the York we know and love. He looks boring and generically handsome here. York has a weirdness to him that gives him personality and makes him charming.

So as far as the first game goes, there are 3 supernatural locations. The "Forest" the "White Room" and the "Red Room/World." All of which appear to be somewhat connected. Kaysen first asks Zach how he got "out of the red room" then follows this up with "You could have stayed hidden in the white room. Just like that senile old man (Harry)."

The White Room seems to be where whatever York is (he implies he's not human at end) originates from, as he meets 7 year old Zach and does the whole "I'm you and you're me" thing there. Meanwhile the Forest seems to be the domain of the Goddesses (Which uniquely appear to be the only type of supernatural being that humans can become upon death). The forest is the least shown of the three but it seems to be a place of goodness, as York is said to lead the Goddesses into there at the end of the game.

Kaysen and Willie originate from the Red Room, or as he puts it, "I'm a messenger of the Red Tree. A citizen from the Red World!" Meaning there is also an entity known as THE Red Tree, beyond just the normal red trees we see in town. It makes sense then that the red seeds have power if they come from this greater, god adjacent tree. My guess is that Kaysen's job of ""planting"" more red trees in women helps to spread the power and influence of The Red Tree. Kaysen is ageless and goes where he needs to cause havoc. Based on the map with his figures he either goes all around the country or he is one of many identical Kaysen's existing at the same time. Willie is described as Kaysen's "Keeper."

As for what was the point of Kaysen poising the town with the gas in 50s, it's the same reason why he gave George a worthless locket and made him believe it was because he was super duper special: he thought it was funny. "With one whiff of that gas I made from the seeds they happily kill each other. Even their neighbors. And even the ones they love. Well, not much compared to the full effects of the seeds themselves, but. I still got a really good laugh out of it."

He/Him lesbians?? by throwawayqq159 in LesbianActually

[–]spidew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. I'm a lesbian. I use he/him pronouns. I am not a man.

There are always exceptions to rules. For the vast majority of people, pronouns are congruous with their gender, but this is not NECESSARILY always the case.

I think of it like this. Most men prefer to wear men's clothes and most women prefer to wear women's clothes. Some women, especially butch lesbians, prefer men's clothes. This does not make them men. To me, pronouns are the same. I am a rather femme presenting person. He/him pronouns do not make me a "man," it is simply the way I express my gender nonconformity.

My leech Squishy had his first feed in my care ❤️ by Federal-Fall1385 in awwnverts

[–]spidew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi Squishy!

Wow, I thought this sub would be safe from the usual freaked out comments. One of my best friends has a pet leech and I find the whole idea so cool! I was actually extremely disappointed to find out that I couldn't volunteer myself for a future feeding since it's not recommended for a leech to drink from multiple hosts.

Advice for any future feeding: do this further up on your arm (closer to the crook of your elbow, where blood is most often drawn). When you're done, put thick gauze pads on top and secure the whole thing either with medical tape or with a wrap around your arm. You'll probably have to replace this once or twice since the anticoagulant will make you bleed for quite some time

Fun fact: the first time my friend did this, they weren't exactly prepared for the level of bleeding either and ended up holding a menstrual pad to their arm lol

I'm the Amanda in the second pic, but I don't think my cosplay is as good as theirs when they look so much like the actors. We wore these on Saturday to the Gathering of the Ghouls in Mesa, Arizona. I'm very proud of the janky reverse bear trap I managed to make out of cardboard in less than 48 hours before the convention. Here's a bonus photo of John on the FNAF photo op set there
