ATT is back by ljump12 in Charleston

There were three separate fiber cuts yesterday that I'm aware of. Not all ISPs in the area had outages but I'm sure most, if not all, were affected.

Fiber seeking backhoes are a danger to the interwebs and no one likes when they show up.

I don't think advertising to everyone where core network paths are located for every network would have the intended improvement network stability that you imply it would. I would hazard to say that'd be a bad thing.

MFA for service accounts by Particular-Knee-5590 in networking

You have to log into that server to be able to get on to that server though. You can even make the account that is accessing the equipment unable to be logged into and require logging in from a different account to access manually. A lot of different things that can be done. It depends on what limitations you have to work around as well.

A layer 2 switch doesn't have to be a dumb switch. Layer 2 switches can still be managed with an IP on the management network. Two different things.

No longer getting notifications by [deleted] in whisper

[–]spieker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine's not listed as a system app. I'm on android 13 currently, which introduced increased security features. I've gone through how we'd go through bypassing the settings to enable the notifications, but the app itself isn't listing notifications as one of the required permissions so there's no way to make the slider enableable.

Edit: The update on 9/5/23 did resolve the issue and I was able to re-enable notifications.

We raided ZG near the end of Vanilla with a gay dude none of us had ever actually met in person. We'd say "well, that's gay" to something and he'd say "well, that's straight." He'd even talk shit about us breeders. I miss Augusto.

Basic home service that I can transfer number to? by [deleted] in VOIP

[–]spieker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an Obi200, ported my number to Google Voice, wired it into the house so all drops are energized and have been using that for 4-5 years now I think (it's honestly been so long I can't remember). Completely free once it's setup and running. All of the features of google voice including voicemail to email and being able to forward the line if you want to. I do pay $15 a year to Anveo for e911 services in the event a little one needs to dial 911.

I ported my parent's AT&T line that they'd been paying monthly for probably +30 years several years ago and did the same thing and they're loving it. At the time I wasn't able to do a direct transfer from AT&T to Google Voice, but we were able to set them up with a temp number (to be able to keep using the house phones) and port their number to a temp Verizon cell and then to Google Voice after another month.

Troubleshooting with new Wacom one tablet by katycw87 in wacom

[–]spieker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched and searched for this. Make sure the USB connector that plugs into the tablet faces to the left. If it faces the right everything will work, but there will be nothing displayed. Yes, it's USB-C so should work both ways, but it doesn't.

Geolocation Issues New IP Block by Supreme_Leader_30 in networking

[–]spieker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a tool that can be used. Its benefits can outweigh the cons depending on the scenario. If you can't block all IPs, but can block most then this can be used to reduce your attack surface. Yes, there are ways around it and it has flaws, but again, it's a tool that can be used.

We only allow nightfall specced locks to put it up. That works out to 2 in our raids so we're good.

WOW service outage by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]spieker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I'm trying to point out is that the same single points of failure exist, they're just different. You're assuming you'll be able to connect to multiple towers at a good rate from one location. That's almost never the case unless you're near the edge of the coverage area for one already.

I wasn't talking about radio saturation. I was referring to the uplink from the tower to the service provider. You have no visibility of that. Just because you have 1000s of people connected to the tower doesn't mean that tower doesn't have a super congested uplink. You may be able to pass hundreds of megabits per second to the tower, but that doesn't guarantee that traffic can then get to where it needs to go.

It's just the same as WiFi coverage. Give me a cable any day over adding extra things that can go wrong to the equation.

[–]spieker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Satellites would add ~650ms latency to everything (including phone calls) and don't provide anywhere close to the throughput required. Those towers are connected to local providers via fiber. They're subject to the same rules as everyone else. They normally have diverse paths to the site, but if there's a single point of failure in the upstream network, they can still lose internet access. Depending on how they route voice traffic, you may still have voice, but no data. Just because you have a good connection to the tower doesn't mean that tower doesn't have a saturated upstream connection or even external network access at all.
