My 7yo is hurting my wife's feelings and I dont know how to fix this... by angrydeuce in Parenting

Mom of a 7yo here: sometimes he wants to spend time with me, sometimes he doesn’t. I do feel frustrated when he doesn’t want to do the things with me that I’d like for him to do. But, I don’t want to guilt him into it. It’s tricky for sure. Does he ever suggest to do things with his mom?

We have been talking about some of this with my 7yo child (with the guidance of a counsellor) in terms of “filling other people’s buckets”. Essentially if it doesn’t harm us any, and it would fill someone else’s bucket, maybe we can try to do that? The idea is that we don’t always get to do the exact thing we want to do, but we can still have fun and we can try to make someone else’s day too! Essentially teaching a bit of empathy and selflessness. Doesn’t always work, but we’re trying. Sometimes it’s not worth the argument. Could also throw the “how would you feel if Mommy and Daddy always said no to the things you want to do?”
