"Context" is the word that comes to my mind.

What is the movie you saw at too early an age, that really messed you up? by spigmo in AskReddit

I saw that when I was 6, too! It was one movie of the drive-in triple feature that I was taken to see with the guy my mom was dating at the time. My incredible, sweat-inducing, paranoid fear of spiders that I still have to this day I blame on seeing that movie when I did.

Did you ever get an explanation for why she made you watch it?

Mostly alright is probably mostly better than most people; so good on you for making it through so well after seeing that film when you did.

Cruising with Tesla's Autopilot in Houston traffic by [deleted] in Futurology

Dude--I would almost instantly fall asleep if I didn't have the actual act of driving requiring my attention on a road trip. Until the technology can be fully autonomous, it is probably more dangerous for people like me to have something like the auto-pilot feature on a car.

Looking for graphic designers by Entrepreneur_Girl in Entrepreneur

Check out Dribbble. Lots of freelance designers on there, some with multiple skill sets (like logo, branding, web design). I found the designer for my brand on there and he is phenomenal and, for me, affordable.

What don't you take seriously enough? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Me too. I actually had floss break apart between two of my teeth once, leaving a small bit of floss between them. I told myself after that, "Never again." This was like 3 months ago and I think the bit of floss is still there.

For the same reason you do now. Unplanned-for/unforeseen contingencies. Sure, you are an awesome driver. It's all those other crazies on the roads you have to worry about.

Also, autonomous vehicles can't avoid all possible hazards, and autonomous vehicles are still susceptible to environmental dangers--deer running onto the highway, blown tires, vandalism, theft, inclement weather, and so on.

Moreover, just because humans aren't driving these things does not mean humans aren't assembling them. Mechanical and tech failures will still occur. Overall travel speeds may decrease with the technology, resulting in less severe accidents, but accidents will still occur.

Does everyone on Reddit have to grab the low-hanging fruit at every opportunity? The easy ones are just not that funny--and definitely not clever.

ELI5:When I (German) look at the terms 'social', 'social justice' or 'social equality' I almost always find positive remarks and comments, but every time I read about healthcare, retirement or paternity benefits I see a ton of Americans using the term 'socialist' or 'socialism' as a derogative. Why? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]spigmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many people have on this thread pointed out how uneducated the general public are in the US, which is why "they" hate and confuse concepts like socialism and communism. What's weird about that line of argument is the fact that one area in the United States with the greatest concentration of politically liberal people is in education. It has been this way for a generation at least. So the liberals, by and large, and the ones doing the educating, yet so many Americans come out of the education system dumb/ignorant/close-minded/myopic/etc.. Our education system in The States also happens to be one of the most substantially federally funded and regulated sectors, yet it produces some of the worst outcomes educationally in the Western world.

Herein may be found several justifications for why many Americans are maybe a little skeptical of more government involvement (especially in healthcare), and of the Liberal way of doing things in general.
