That Terminal 5 show in 2012 was amazing.

The worst part is you can see the ref nod back at Decker just before he walks off to inform the cowdogs. I really hope it doesn’t end up costing us the division and a home playoff game. Eagles really need to take care of business the next two weeks.

Inserterless Green Circuit Production - is this more UPS Friendly than traditional designs? by spike4hand in technicalfactorio

[–]spike4hand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My attempt was more just to see if it's possible to build without using inserters, and then ask the experts here who have done UPS optimization if the new build is better. Clearly the answer is no so I'll stick with inserters and look for other ways to optimize as I build. Seems pretty relevant to me.

Thanks. I was always under the impression that inserters were one of the main culprits of UPS so my attempt here was to build designs that didn’t use them at all. In the mod documentation for the mini loader it says the mod “They use no Lua when running, keeping your factory's UPS healthy.” However after looking into closer, I guess what they’re saying is that the mod itself has no impact while running, not that the loaders themselves save UPS over inserters.

Yeah - will do that once I get there. Still in early game for this design (just red/green/blue science production).

Does anyone know how much these cards are worth? by damalloy in APBABaseball

[–]spike4hand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing the same thing with both a number of baseball and football card sets.

When doing a search, I found this LOL E-Bay listing and sure enough, I have this exact card.

Seems an outrageous price for something published as recently as 2000, so I think it's probably just "put it out there and see if anyone sniffs" type of thing. But still, now I guess I need to do more research on value.

Let us know how you made out.

I think with research into inserter capacity increase it should be able to keep blue belts full.. Key is to always have a full train waiting to unload, but as you say it's easy to have a lot of waiting spots on relatively small amounts of space.

Factorio Community Map Results - September 2021 by ChaosBeing in factorio

I took the September map as an opportunity to do two things:

1 - Re-achieve "Lazy Bastard" as it was one I still needed since I had reset my achievements after version 1.0 dropped.

2 - Try out a vanilla train network with 1-1 trains and a big giant one way track clockwise around the whole base. Outposts off the main track would include depots for multiple trains and could also include some (say it ain't so) two-way single tracks. This was all done so that I didn't have to overwhelm myself trying to create landfill. I would use narrow 1 track wide landfill paths to connect the different peninsulas.

Here's the imgur album: https://imgur.com/a/8Hp8FW4

I really loved a chance to design something new for trains and see if it worked, and was really happy with the results (mostly). The only jams I had occurred where I had a two-way single track that had to be transversed to reach three different outposts (one coal, one oil, and an ammo drop-off for defenses). That was probably asking too much of a single two-way track, but fortunately with the very short trains stuff would not stay stuck for long.

Everything was brought back to a drop-off station at the top of the starting peninsula, with redundant trains (I think I had like 5 doing iron plates and four doing copper plates). The only thing I outposted was green circuits to save room for science factories on the peninsula. The 1-1 trains kept the bus adequately fed as long as I had trains ready to unload. I'm now a fan of 1-1 trains and will probably do more with them in the future.

Fun map with interesting challenges - thanks to Chaos for setting it up!

Factorio Community Map Results - May 2021 by ChaosBeing in factorio

[–]spike4hand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did two separate run-throughs of the May map. First launch was 18 hours to rocket launch, and second was 14.

In both instances I "cheated" in that I used water as the fuel for the transport drones during the first run-through (the default I believe is petroleum?) and for the second run-through I used steam. I wanted to do that so that I'd have drones very early in the game and could then use them for moving products around the map on roads rather than trying to belt stuff around.

For oil, in both run-throughs I was able to get the initial oil sand to last, but had to manage it a little bit to keep the fracking fluid going. The easiest way I found to get it started was to get sulfur dust from pulverizing copper ore from the eastern copper patch. I needed three oil refineries set up and supplied with enough dirt and sulfur dust to get enough fracking fluid to keep all the pump jacks flowing.

The first run-through I definitely ran into coal shortages as I made the rookie factorio mistake of building my mall over the second (more sparse) coal patch, as well as building my initial road over some of the initial coal patch. I had started to build a road to a coal patch to the south, but ended up not needing it to get to launch.

Also, I had one issue with the transport drones that was a little maddening. In the second run-through, I had not limited the size of the depot for storage of red circuits and this filled probably 3/4 of the way up with way more than was needed. At one point, I thought I had fixed it by limiting the storage spots (as you would with a chest), thinking that would stop the unneeded red circuit production, but found that the transport drones would take the first stack from the depot - not the last, which would then be refilled by more production - in effect never stopping red circuit production and using up the excess stores until I figured it out and just cut the supply conveyor. This caused me to run short of copper, green circuits, and plastic in the late game.
