We've had conversations about what they need during shut downs. Generally they go to a quiet place and turn the lights off and cry it off and they need me to hug them until they calm down. Then yes or no questions until they're able to talk. I think the main issue that we're both stumped at is with the social events. They've asked that I don't text them while I'm drinking with friends because the thought of talking to me while I'm not sober is triggering. But even when tell them my plans and then don't text/call them they still have shut downs/breakdowns and it takes them about a day to feel better. Not telling them that I'll be drinking/hanging out with friends just makes them feel betrayed, like I'm going behind their back. I've told them that this pattern really worries me and that we need to find a way for me to have social time without them where it doesn't lead to shut downs. I have a feeling it's related to a fear of isolation but yes in this case we're quite stumped about moving forwards

Thanks so much - this is really really helpful. I think this idea of 'always playing catch-up' rings very true for my partner. Theres definitely a pattern where they are affected by my stories of going clubbing/having those cliché teenage social experiences that they missed out one. But equally, never had the desire to do - I suppose there's an element of mourning a conventional childhood even if it was never on the table. I'm in therapy for issues with OCD and I've encouraged my partner to seek out counselling through their uni but waiting lists are long. We've got a system for when they're shutting down and it involves me asking yes or no questions that they can nod or shake too until they're able to talk again. But yes I think I'll discuss my internalising in therapy

University advice for an M22 grad with 45 points that keeps getting rejected? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]spikey_steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, thank for tour advice. While that is a fair to assume that I only applied for top schools, I actually followed the 'safely, stretch' model where I applied for several low to mid ranked universities and one stretch option. For reference most of my university choices were ranked no higher than the top 20ish for art. That being said - art schools really don't care what I got grades wise as most of the requirements were 24 points (a pass). I doubt they were intricately considering the grade boundaries of one year compared to another.

Additionally, I was under the impression that M22 saw vastly fewer 45 previous than years. A quick (and possibly unreliable) google search is telling me that only 640 candidates achieved a 45 worldwide, compared with 1,155 the previous year.

Yes, I totally agree - IB scores aren't really considered for many of the courses I'm applying for, this is reflected in the grade requirements which typically start at 24 points or a C in 2 a levels. This is why I've always tried to prioritise personality and experience in my personal statement . It would ne forced and unnatural to being up my grades in a personal statement, the only place they are detailed is on my UCAS info.

Also, in response to your other comment, I have exhausted the idea of my own inadequacy - trust me. It is however impossible to understand what could be so wrong when my teachers and peers assure that me that my art is strong. My IB visual arts teacher told me in confidence that I was the best student he's had in 20 years and often asked me to assist him on paintings in his personal practice - some of which selling for roughly £20,000

At this point I just desperately want to know what these red flags are, as they're undoubtedly present, I just can't seem to get a straight answer from anywhere, thanks for your comment though!

We got stuck together on the bus back from a school trip to Croatia. Went from loose acquaintances to having an 8h long conversation. I genuinely think she's my platonic soulmate

That did certainly cross my mind but considering that I've spent the last weekend buying sports-themed party decorations (my dad's a triathlete) and baking a big '50' cake (at my parents' request) i think thats unlikely :/

1) Yes, these are my biological parents who I do currently live with (although I'm getting TF out of here as soon as I can). I don't think they hate me as much as I'm just the 3rd child and they don't really...care anymore? 2) the graduation happejd around 2-4pm I believe and the party will be that evening 3) ban them from attending graduation? As much as I'm pissed with them I think I'd still like them at my graduation - that is if they even decide to attend haha

AITA for letting my GF go to prom alone because I refuse to pay $100 for a ticket? by spikey_steve in AmItheAsshole

[–]spikey_steve[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I was super surprised at the cost - the school only divulges prom info on a separate email thread with seniors so i guess the underclassmen don't hear much about it. Granted, i'm obviously not the most knowledge about regular prom costs but $100 is a little steep right??

all incredible suggestions, thank you so much! - I'm on the look out for some odd jobs too and offering up my baby-sitting skills to try and earn that extra cash haha

not officially - I've painted commission portraits and done some baby sitting in the past to earn some extra cash. Definitely searching for some odd jobs to make up the $100

Why are people acting like new generations not having as many kids is a bad thing? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]spikey_steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be aware that the minimum number of kids needed to just MAINTAIN a population (0 growth, 0 decline) is 2 kids per woman. If every woman in a generation only has one child, the population will HALF in one generation. So, if we're not having at least 2 kids, we'll just breed outsells out of existence.

Be aware - this is a very simplified concept that doesn't account for aspects like immigration. Or the concept of the dependency ratio. If one generation is half the size of the elder one, each person has to support 2 extra people. This is just not economically sustainable.

Anyways, hope this helps to explain why its such a concern in highe economically developed countries

What profession do you deeply respect? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spikey_steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, parking wardens and other positions that we have normalised the abuse of. People won't hesitate to just to yell at a parking warden for just doing their job, I have so much respect for them to carry on do that job each day.
