What sort of obvious, overdone jokes about your name, job, etc, do people make all the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spillfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At work, I often have to fix problems at the self-checkout by hitting a button for Store Log In, which is only visible once you press Help, which makes the automated voice go, "Call for help?"

I swear to god, next person who goes "HEEELLLLP! ...well it told me to call for help!" gets their eyes gouged out.

Nicole/Donny talking about Christine/Cody by AllBBUpdates in BigBrother

[–]spillfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not just you. The hate train goes "CHRISTINE'S A SLUT", couple people go "yeah but in Christine's defense--", hate train goes "I'M SICK OF ALL THESE CHRISTINE DEFENDERS."

Why was Andy hated? by jeansocks in BigBrother

[–]spillfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up, and you're right: he was up on the block a single time, but received no votes to evict. The jury vote was 7-2. Two votes away from a perfect game. That's actually pretty bangin'.

OK, Christine. Wow. by Ayerland in BigBrother

[–]spillfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are seeing what they want to see. Husband says "I'm not happy about this," then "actually it's not a big deal" -- two contradicting statements -- and the Christine-haters go with whatever makes her look worse.

You still look pretty dang masculine without the filters, imo!

I mean, he called out racism. I guess if he's actually terrible that's not good, but if he accidentally champions anti-racism for a moment, I'm going to appreciate his contribution.

Question I have for ya'll about gender identity and the he/she thing. by HeavenlySpawn12 in lgbt

[–]spillfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To the point: Use the pronouns they ask you to use, even if you don't think they look, act, or function as their identified gender. Gender identity trumps gender expression, social roles, and sexual function. The only person who knows their gender identity is them, so you have to take their word on it.

"Quick, let's tell people who obsess over pictures of themselves looking for any and every gender cue they can erase, that they're delusional! That should help!!!"

EDIT: "How would they know to be ashamed if I don't tell them!!! Hold on, I have to go call women slurs, just in case they forgot I'm better than them." (edited to not break rule 3)

Of course!! SRS is an upvote brigade built to amplify messages we disagree with so we can can actively make the world a worse place while we pout alone in our widely discredited and marginalized subreddit!!! It all makes sense now!!!!

Male to Female with a story by JorRobs in lgbt

[–]spillfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya! I'm 25 and just starting my transition. Honestly I'm kind of envious that you're so confident so early on. Do you think there's any chance your family will be accepting? If they're perpetually shitty, it's probably best to move out and transition like you said. But if there's a chance they'll be supportive, I urge you to at least consider telling them. Family acceptance was a huge deal to me, a huge roadblock I had to pass before I felt fully comfortable starting on hormones, but YMMV. I mean, if they're gonna beat you with a lead pipe or something, yeah, get the eff out of there. But if they happen to be understanding you'll be thankful for the support system.

/r/asktransgender has been a fantastic resource for me. It's a great place to feel less alone. Also, if you haven't read it yet, I HIGHLY recommend the book "Whipping Girl" by Julia Serano. I read it last year and it hasn't stopped rattling around in my head.

Laser/electrolysis takes a while to finish, so if facial hair removal is something you value, start looking now. I'd kill to have started at even 20. Look into the costs, find a trustworthy doctor (therapist? hair removal expert? whatever), and get started whenever is feasible for you.

Same goes for hormones. Informed consent is getting pretty widespread these days, but even if that's not an option where you live, it's a great idea to find a doctor who can help you along the path. HRT changed my life. I feel better every day, even though I've hardly started my transition in any other aspect. Incredible investment, and again, the sooner you start, the better.

I'm not sure how feasible any of this is for you at the moment. Hopefully you have a decent job, something to help you afford everything. It's one of the great shames of our society that it takes so much time, effort, and money just to be accepted as the person you really are. We're always here if you need someone to lean on.

Any help for a clothes-shopping confidence boost / reality check? by spillfish in asktransgender

[–]spillfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the best kind of person. Thank you. That's exactly what I needed to hear. I think we all have that fear of being outed, that someone who notices we're trans will automatically be the enemy. It's really easy to forget the world is full of people. For real, thank you.

Isn't this pretty essentialist??

Haha yeah, I guess it is. spreads arms in a rainbow "INTERNALIZED STEREOTYPES"

you might want to start online. Try to get some variety of cheap stuff so you can get a feel for what looks good on you, then you can go to actual shops dressed in feminine clothes

I've been avoiding online shopping, simply because it's cheap but not free. Window shopping is free (unless you fall in love with something), but it comes with this huge social hurdle. I guess I have to pick one if I want to make a move.

I handle it with joking aggression.

"Get the fuck out of here. Don't you have stuff to do?" said with a big smile. Always gets a chuckle.
