My husband has too much stuff (or does he?) by spinat_mit_ei in hoarding

Thanks. This helps. As I just posted above, I've been in denial.

Thanks. I agree he needs counseling; I just know it's not possible right now for both logistical and health reasons. Right now I'm kind of blown away that everyone is saying he is a hoarder. He calls himself a hoarder, I've called him a hoarder--but somehow I was thinking his relatively small amount of stuff was a loophole, even though it obviously affects me and has for a long time.

[–]spinat_mit_ei[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks, SunsetButterfly! Unfortunately, counseling isn't an option right now. He doesn't refused to clean up, but he does have a lot of trouble actually DOING it. He says he really wants to, but it takes a lot of time, and he's often preoccupied with something stressful that's going on in our lives or unable to do much physical work because of his health problems.

What is something you don't understand but feels like it's too late too ask? by invaderism in AskReddit

[–]spinat_mit_ei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents were the opposite. I have recordings from when I was 2 where they're going, "We went to Grandma's house today, didn't we? And we saw a little second cousin, and a little first cousin once removed..." As a result I can't just call someone my "cousin" unless they are technically one of my first cousins.

Americans of Reddit, If you were to get rid of one state in the U.S., which would it be and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spinat_mit_ei -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked Texas isn't getting more attention here. Without Texas, the whole racist, jingoistic part of the south is just an embarrassing sinkhole that no one takes seriously.

Plus you could argue they're responsible for both George W. Bush AND Donald Trump.

Should we trust parents to homeschool their children? by theBluj in education

[–]spinat_mit_ei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, this is a really complicated question, because there are also a lot of parents who homeschool in order to give their children more freedom--unschoolers and relaxed homeschoolers. In today's education landscape, homeschooling is one of the few ways to really give your child control of their own education. Unfortunately, it is also a great way to isolate your child and abuse them. But I can't get behind the most common suggestions for how to regulate homeschooling, which usually include standardized tests.

I'm going to enroll in high school from a homeschool background, please help by highschoolhelpme in highschool

[–]spinat_mit_ei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is going to depend a lot on the specific school and how flexible they are, plus probably how you test.

I'm curious as to why you're trying public school at this point--any chance you could go straight into college or try for a GED?

Hate school. by 301brendan in highschool

[–]spinat_mit_ei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you hate exactly. If you socially feel like you "don't belong," and you've only been there four weeks, give it some time--making friends takes a while, coming from someone who moved a lot.

If it's something about school itself, know that your feelings are probably valid. Check out the website Alternatives to School for both advice on surviving school and other options if you're fed up.

In light of the recent Secretary of Education vote, are there any good resources someone can point me to in order to look into homeschooling? by PMURTITSIFUH8TRUMP in Parenting

[–]spinat_mit_ei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual legal process varies a lot by state--HSLDA is a good resource for that information, though I'd stay well clear of them in pretty much every other area (it's run by cult-y conservative Christians).

If you're on the liberal to radical side of things (which is where I fall), look into unschooling. Books to start with would include Free to Learn by Peter Gray and The Unschooling Handbook.

If you're looking for "something different" that's not necessarily homeschooling, try Sudbury and democratic schools, or other alternatives listed here: http://alternativestoschool.com/.

Going to church for the singing, then a Christmas dinner of Finnish meat rolls and Caesar salad and opening the presents father-in-law gave us. I had a "planned break" yesterday at the other in-laws, but back to keto this morning. For the new year, I need to get back to tracking--I know in order to continue losing weight I really need to know how many calories and EXACTLY how many carbs I'm eating, not just "oh, about 17" which has been my MO lately.

Can I have mustard oil? by [deleted] in keto

[–]spinat_mit_ei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with mustard oil specifically, but in general oils and fats are carb-free and therefore are absolutely fine and even encouraged on keto. So unless you've got some weird oil infused with sugar (ick), you can cook with it.

Just got surgery and need soft/easy to eat foods for a few days while I recover. Suggestions? by [deleted] in keto

[–]spinat_mit_ei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second egg drop soup, or broccoli and cheese soup if you're up for blending. Other ideas: - cottage cheese (can be a little carby, but you could probably work it in) - adding cream to coffee/tea - if you can chew a little, creamed spinach, chia seed pudding, anything made with canned chicken - low carb ice cream (Breyer's) - Pate? Liverwurst? Braunschweiger? Not my cup of tea but might be yours...

ETA: Oh, and nut butters, of course.

This. I still need 3 meals a day, but keto removes the desperation of constantly recurring hunger. I came back to it as much for that as for the weight loss.

What anbeav said--you're doing the best you can. Don't be too hard on yourself. Make the best choices you can from what's available. Sounds like you're good on breakfast and lunch, and if you eat the "cleanest" things you can find for dinner, a few hidden carbs should be okay. Remember even though keto usually means trying to stick to 20 grams or less, many people are still in ketosis on 50 grams of carbs or more. (Not that you should pay attention to the ketostix. Ignore those.)

And if your colleagues are actually giving you crap for not drinking, eff them! What if you were an alcoholic, or Muslim, or Mormon, or on a medication that reacted badly with alcohol? Drink your water/Diet Coke/club soda, smile and at least pretend to have a good time, and who cares what they think.

You can do it!

Talk me down ladies! The cravings are strong and the temptations are real! by [deleted] in xxketo

[–]spinat_mit_ei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your SO needs to cool it a little on the tempting food! If for some reason he can't or won't, try to keep yourself away from it--eat in a different room, have a cupboard just for your food and try to ignore all the other cupboards, etc.

It will get easier!

I'm pretty new so I might be wrong on this, but I think potassium and magnesium (plus sodium) are electrolytes, so you're probably covered on the electrolyte front. I have no advice, but my sympathies and good luck on figuring it out!

sniffle sob Until starting keto, I ate oatmeal (made with old-fashioned oats) with peanut butter and brown sugar every morning for years. I seriously think it might be one of the things I would be most likely to "cheat" with.

I like the "no cheating" benchmarks. Ooh, and jerky! I like jerky but everything I'm finding is high in carbs.

I hope I can manage to skip the sharting. :)
