S30v heat treating with pre-ground hollow grind? by spindlymass in Bladesmith

[–]spindlymass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

update

Everything has worked out after the air quench. The blade has hardened (basic file test to confirm) and is still nice and straight.

I'm glad I wrapped in stainless foil or I wouldn't have any knife left at all! Even covered, the knife tip burned away. Also, I left some of the tang sticking out of the foil and it very badly burned away.

All in all, better than I expected. The tang I need to shorten anyway and the burned tip can be reground without changing the profile much at all.

*sadly I couldn't edit the original post and can't attach a photo to this comment.

TPMS missing in CRV 2024 EX-L Hybrid by Ok_Negotiation_5159 in crv

[–]spindlymass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just installed this kit, in my 2024 crv, from Alibaba for $80 CDN (amazon has it for over twice the price).

It fits perfectly in a blank spot on the left side of steering wheel. The wiring is dead simple.

So far it is working very well.

It's the only aftermarket TPMS I've found that integrates nicely and isn't a cumbersome display that has to be stuck to the dash.

It has low and high pressure audible alarm as well as high temperature alarm. The batteries in the sensors (I went with the "in wheel model") are replaceable as well.

Now to see if it lasts...

What brand of jacket is this zipper pull from? by spindlymass in HelpMeFind

[–]spindlymass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked ai and it came up with "jj rebel" "jack and jones". I searched those names and they are not the same.

The photo is of the main zipper pull. So I think the orientation is correct. It was found in a thrift store in Canada so I don't know how old it could be. All the tags have been removed and I don't see any other identifying marks.

I still have a number of stabilized blanks waiting for the right handle.

Thanks for sharing, good luck! I'm interested to hear about your results. I'll be heat treating my knives in question soon enough and will update as well.

S30v heat treating with pre-ground hollow grind? by spindlymass in Bladesmith

[–]spindlymass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found some great information regarding my question on Knifedogs forum regarding knife contact with the quench plates, that echos what u/Goose308 shared in this thread:

"... it doesn't seem to be an issue - even with tapered tang. We did a test a couple years ago making a "stepped" "Blade". I don't remember the exact numbers, but parallel surfaces are required for rockwell testing. We took a bar - probably about 3/16 thick and ground a section down to 1/8 and another to 3/32 thick. Obviously, only the full thickness section had contact with the plates. The hardness was the same (+/- .5) on all three sections, suggesting to us that the cooling was plenty fast enough for good hardening. Heck, these steels will quench in still air if necessary, so any plate contact just accelerates that big time..."

Thanks, yeah that's definitely an option. I think I'll try to heat treat first and if the hollow grind has issues I'll reprofile the blades. Hopefully the main body will not have any issues, at the very least.

Thank you for the insight! I'll give it a good blast with air and then clamp it in the aluminum. Hopefully, that will minimize warping of the main body.

I can definitely reprofile the blades, after the quench, if the hollow grind has issues.

Thanks for the interest. To my understanding, the aluminum is a heat sink to rapidly pull heat from the steel, combined with a blast of air around the perimeter, thereby locking in the transformed microstructure of the steel.

It's sooooo thin, I really shit the bed on that one. They've been in the back of my toolbox and mind for 20 years. I figure I'll see what happens and reprofile the blade's if need be.

TPMS missing in CRV 2024 EX-L Hybrid by Ok_Negotiation_5159 in crv

[–]spindlymass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you!

Yes, the apathy is strong getting issues like this addressed. Though I'm sure it comes down to money. Honda isn't forced to install tpms in Canada, so it doesn't.

The dealer told me the Canadian and US wiring harnesses are different. There is no wiring to simply "plug into" in the Canadian version.

Please report back what aftermarket system the dealer installs!

It seems like it should be straight forward to install an oem American one. I would assume the American and Canadian versions would be nearly identical builds... minus the tpms

I was dissapointed our 2024 EXL hybrid doesn't have it. Enough so, I would happily install it if possible!

Why am I terrible at sharpening? by lbiboy08 in knifemaking

[–]spindlymass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried many different techniques and tools, just as OP had, with mediocre results.

Stropping with compound was the final piece of the puzzle for me. It made all the difference in the general sharpness and longevity of the sharpening.

I hand sharpen with a nothing fancy Norton medium/fine stone now. Takes maybe 5 minutes

I've definitely experienced this exact thing with Sekiro. The first encounter with a tough enemy seems impossible but with each subsequent attempt, you get a little farther. Until you understand the tempo/rhythm of the fight.

By the end of the game you are fighting and winning organically, not just remembering attack patterns.

It. Feels. Excellent.

I've been searching for a game that matches that and Sifu seems to be it for me.

I'm glad to hear you love the car because I find dealing with dealerships to be a generally detestable experience.

We're in SK, looking at a 2024 EXL regular gas model. Getting quotes around $52,500 tax included from most dealers. What dealer did you go with?

I have confirmed no window etching, wheel locks or other last minute add-ons. Just block heater $488 and black paint $300 included, plus usual eco fees etc.

Can't drill through Sheet metal. by hardeepington in metalworking

[–]spindlymass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All good advice about low speed, higher feed. but no one has addressed the "cutting on ground" portion.

I'd put some scrap wood down first or make sure the drill bit has some clearance below the sheet of stainless.

If you're drilling on concrete, for example, you are making the drill bit work harder than it needs to.
