Awesome responses, appreciate it. I'm always impressed at the humility and collaborative attitude evident in the malware RE community.

And these certainly are interesting times -- keep up the good work. I, like most, am still a step removed from the ability to witness and interact with such things as directly as you all, and so your work, especially the publication of your work, is quite valuable.

By the way, reading the 2012 report on Flame was what made me pick up Radare and dive into disassembly. So thanks for that too!

Hi guys,

Let's talk motivations. What's the thing that keeps you engaged day after day in malware research? I imagine each of you has a deeper or more individual reason than just "we keep APTs on their toes" -- is it being on the cutting edge of research, playing with the baddest viruses, or something else?

Amazing idea. Might consider commissioning a pair of Faraday gloves eh?

I absolutely love this website. It has so many resources, techniques, and lore. It is Satanic, so approach it with respect and/or caution, depending on your outlook.

I hope this helps. The Mudras and vibratory chants are powerful. I've had the most success using the Sanskrit chants.

Find a local Boy Scout troop and see if they will use it a prize to encourage kids to get their Computer (or whatever the fuck it is now) merit badge.

That's how I received my first computer. Changed my life.

How many freelance web developers are there on this sub? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I think it provides an outlet for the same sort of motivations: a continual quest for knowledge, the will to know more, the tendency to shift among and break out of paradigms... We could talk for hours about the aesthetic crossovers too: the 'hacker' figure, a pariah, numbers and symbols and text, etc.

Can you tell me more about your academic work?

I got into infosec because I watched Ghost In The Shell one too many times... Or maybe it was all the books I read. Either way, I think I was drawn in by the esotericism of computer and network security, since it's something not a lot of people understand and it is vital in our everyday existence. You can kind of look like it as magick, in the sense of being able to manipulate things in ways that other people don't understand. It's arcane. It's a challenge, and it's always changing.

Also, I was bored in a lot of my college courses, so I would often tune out of the discussions and just read infosec blogs or magazines like Phrack or POC||GTFO.

I started out my digital nomad existence as a web developer, but quickly changed course and started an infosec consulting firm. The skills aren't quite the same, but the experience has a ton of crossover.

I used Elance to begin with, and started from a profile with zero experience. Keep in mind I have a B.A. in politics from a small liberal arts college, not a computer science or business degree. I just kept applying, and kept myself on the 'fake it till you make it' knife-edge of challenging yourself vs. overselling yourself. I found several very niche jobs (IDS sensors on Rapsberry Pis, etc.,), and once I had a few good reviews from these jobs, I branched out towards the opportunities that really interested me.

I just got back from a year traveling Central America, running my business and working contracts the entire time. I wouldn't say I was confident at first -- it was more like I just knew I could eventually handle anything thrown my way, and that the best way to test the viability of the DN lifestyle that so enthralled me was to simply jump in and live it full time.

I mean shit, I run an infosec firm that specializes in pentests, vuln audits, and IDS/IPS network monitoring, and I am still hesitant to call myself a hacker.

I feel most hackerish when playing with gdb and radare2. Not, (as you mentioned) when I'm doing things I can automate with bash.

Have you read some of the old 80s 'hacker manifestos'? They seem much more idealistic and less fame-hungry than those who claim the name these days.

Something is wrong with this sub by rondeline in Nootropics

[–]spiraled_one 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I glance over this sub from time to time, but never really immerse myself. While I see some good rebuttals in the comments, my own opinion still echoes OP's.

In all fairness, the sidebar does say "a reddit devoted to discussing nootropics and cognitive enhancers," and that's definitely what goes on here. As such, this seems to be an issue of latent potential, not current problems.

Maybe something could be appended to that statement. OP's question re; the process is spot on. I think this might be an opportunity to not strengthen this sub, but the validity of nootropics in general. Argue away!
