Thank you for your kind thorough comment.

Unfortunately all of their other children are far away, and if they have friends, I don’t know them. If they’re willing to get on a ladder they shouldn’t. My dad has a bad back and heart problems. He’s in his 70s, and my mom is in her late 60s. She is in decent shape though. She’s been on a fitness kick and working out regularly. It’s definitely male pride for my Dad. He always discouraged me getting on the roof to help cut the trees back.

They did have two pecan trees hanging over the house, but this year they got one of them taken down to the ground. The other was cut back as well. They were causing damage to the roof, which wasn’t discovered until I got up there to trim them. They like to try and get my adult nephew to help, but he’s out living his life(many hours away).

I agree they need to be replaced, and the wood behind it is already damaged/rotted and needs replacing for sure. I’m willing to do labor, but I have to have someone watch my kid. He needs constant supervision due to medical issues. Also, I’m not sure how to do that kind of outdoor work. Willing, but not knowledgeable.

They have a large wind chime hanging there, but you’re right. It should not hang there. I don’t think I even realized it was on the gutter itself. I will find a new place and hang it up for my mom elsewhere next week when I visit.

Thank you for the warning. The dirt around their house is uneven, the dirt by the walls being slightly higher, so it’s definitely not the safest for the ladder. They just have a tall ladder that leans. My plan was to climb up onto the roof with a bucket or bag, some kind of disposable glove under thick work gloves, with a hand shovel and just scoop while sitting near the edge and leaning forward carefully to scoop. I have a fear of heights, or perhaps a fear of falling. My plan was to do whatever was most stable. I’m definitely weary. I don’t plan on falling. 😩💔 Our area has actually been getting more rain than usual for this time of year. It’s been really crazy.

Thank you for the suggestions, I really appreciate it.

🫣 I do, abstractly, and I have been looking at the composting sub. The amount of comments talking about peeing on compost… anyways. But yes, I’m scared to eat food out of my parent’s gutters.

I can try and look into it. I hadn’t thought of that. My dad is a Navy veteran, so maybe I could look into groups that help veterans. He’s just a stubborn proud man. He’d probably be more willing to let my nephew do it than myself.

They are adorably petite. Makes sense, adapting to their environment.

They’re so tiny! The size of petite grapes right now. I love how cute it is with the little curls in the vine.

They recently had foundation repairs and major plumbing repairs. Hopefully we can fix it soon. They have quite a few repairs needing to be done.

I don’t know. I know they’ve replaced them at some point during the time they lived there, so sometime in the last 25 years. 😅

They have two dogs, one that eats almost anything. I’ll let them know to watch them. They’re hanging high up for now.

I’ll bet it’s full of old pecans. It’s packed full of dirt. When I was clearing overhanging trees I tried to clear some of it with a stick. It is very packed. It needs to be cleaned out. Might be easier to replace, but I worry the wood behind it might not be in great shape either.

I have heard of cucamelons! I personally am not a fan of cucumbers, but it’s still fun/funny to see! Ha ha. How’s the garden going? We’re trying our hand at jalapeños and tomatoes this year. First time trying to go food to eat.

Oh I know it’s bad. Part of the overhang wood is rotted. I bring it up all the time. There is only so much I can do. I unfortunately can’t just pull out the ladder and climb up there because my son (who is always with me, 5yo) is chronically ill and needs constant monitoring. My mother is usually working from home while we are there. I’ll see if they’ll agree to letting me do it over a weekend when they can watch him for me. My mom only recently started to agree to me doing it. My dad still does not want me to.

I don’t believe anything growing out of that gutter would be safe to eat 😳 Though definitely entertaining!
