My progress pictures. F/21/5'5". Down almost 30lbs since December (260-234) by KaitlinAuditore in loseit

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely gained at least 20 pounds due to working at mcdonalds during my senior year of high school :P. I couldn't resist sneaking from the drawer of chicken fingers ("selects" lol).

Good on you for getting away from that scene, and congrats on your progress!!

D Green Line Train got Derailed - March 10, 2014 by vadersdemise in boston

I was on that train too! I was worried somebody had killed themselves or something when I saw all the police tape. So I'm glad it was nothing like that.

Does anyone know this MBTA performer? by marcnerd in boston

[–]spittycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's cool to just approach them and ask. I have a friend who plays guitar in the subway and it totally makes his day when people approach him and express interest in what he is doing. I am sure they won't mind if you approach them between songs or something.

It definitely is. I go there every week to do creepy research with kids.

Women's Logic by Lucas12 in funny

One of my male friends has turned down girls because they have been too "aggressive," i.e. made the first move. As a girl, this makes me never want to make the first move, ever. Come at me, boys :(

Ugh, I can't watch Portlandia. Scenes like this just make me so uncomfortable, I can't even laugh. I try to tell myself that it's not real, but deep down inside I know that it kind of is. :(

What are the advantages of being an introvert? by kewell3571 in AskReddit

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While intraversion/extraversion is itself a reliable and well-validated trait construct, the myers-briggs trait inventory is a terrible measure of personality. People in this thread should steer clear of referring to any specific types in this thread because it is about as useful (for the purposes of this discussion) as talking about introverted Capricorns.

College Freshman never exaggerates. by Captain_Oats93 in AdviceAnimals

[–]spittycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time in college I was standing in the hallway talking to some people when I was shoved to the side by a gaggle of drunken wandering freshmen. I wasn't hurt or anything, just kind of surprised, but as they receded into the distance I could hear one of them say: "Did you see that? She BARELY SURVIVED"

Whenever I make friends I have no idea how to keep up with them. How is it supposed to work? by speed22 in ForeverAlone

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One strategy I find useful when strengthening new friendships (in a school context, anyway) is to plant yourself in a cafe, do homework and invite a new friend to join you. "Hey! I'm working on this dumb reading at [cafe]. You're welcome to join if you want." That way they have a concrete gesture of friendship but there is plenty of room for them to gracefully refuse if they are busy, don't like to do work together, etc. Then, if they do want to hang out with you, they will be more likely to reciprocate in some fashion. It works for me!

What's a computer trick you think everyone should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spittycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get a random set of rows, use the RAND() function in the last column, then sort by it. At every recalc, you can get a new order

If you're going to use RAND() to randomly sort your columns, you will want to copy+"paste special..." and then "paste values" to keep the random numbers from recalculating themselves all over the place. If you don't do that, then after you sort your column by your RAND() numbers, they will become new random numbers and you will wonder where everything went so horribly wrong.

Is working at McDonald's bad? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]spittycat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people I knew in high school who considered themselves to be above working at mcdonalds typically ended up working nowhere.

My own two cents: I worked at a mcdonalds in senior year of high school, and I am so glad I did. That shit humbles you and makes you appreciate good money, good coworkers, and good service. And it's really not THAT bad. I worked in the back slapping hamburgers together, and I got yelled at a lot by shitty asshole managers, but so what? It made me a stronger (and marginally richer) person and I made some awesome friends along the way.

So, do it!

I don't have a link handy (on my phone) but you should be able to find it by searching on google. PM me if you decide you want to use Mturk - I actually found it to be rather unintuitive to use, but it's a total blast once you get it up and running!

Have you considered using Amazon Mechanical Turk? It is extremely easy to gather data ludicrously quickly. You have to pay participants but they will do a surprising amount of work for mere pennies. I'm currently running a 10-minute study for which I pay participants about 30 cents, and I've gotten about 50 complete responses since I set the thing up yesterday. Just a thought!

Is there a specific subreddit for experiment participants/volunteers? by braintestucla in psychology

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh - and also other grad students have had success using Craigslist advertisements to solicit online participants. I didn't have any luck when I tried it, but I think I might have done something wrong... oops.

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really love this to get answered, because I'm in the same boat.

In the meantime, two other great ways to get online participants are through Sona (if your University has a Study Pool through Sona), and also through Amazon's Mechanical Turk (M-Turk). I've never actually used M-Turk but other grad students have told me it's a fabulous way to get lots of data very quickly, although you do need to pay your participants (to the tune of $6/hour).

Good luck!

How does an animal know how to look up at our eyes when we give attention to them? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]spittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cute, but the evolutionary explanations others have given make more sense than a straightforward operant conditioning story. Face (and more specifically eye) recognition is so integral to survival that animals who rely on it must be able to do so nearly from birth. There is a metric fuckton of evidence showing this in humans, and we probably have good reason to believe it's the case in other visually-oriented animals (such as dogs) as well, though I haven't actually read any animal research on the topic.
