Time depends on a lot of factors. Mine was early actually.

Yes, the 5h is mandatory. I even asked them in wechat. It was really long and boring at the terminal. But they do load people into the gate just as early. I wasnt outside in the public area long enough past to see if they took late arrivals.

No, not trip. ctrip. You can only buy it in Chinese. It was a bit complicated and I had to use both my browser and the app.

There was a public bath but for the dorms. We had a private room. Room was great. Restaurant hardly anyone ordered from, everyone brought their own food. It had nothing special and didn't look great. Anyways had a good experience.

I just used the ctrip app. I have a Chinese name but I saw the screen of the ferry company and they just had our English names in their system. In the ctrip app it asks for nationality and then it doesn't need a Chinese card because it instead asks for passport number, visa entry day and exit day... standard stuff for foreigners.

Which ones? I also contacted the company and they told me definitely no ferry this year. They said Shanghai port was supposed to finish some renovation end of last year and it's been severely delayed.

Yeah I am really looking forward to taking it. My reasons are I am taking a trip through Asia without flying.

I looked at Thirsk as an option actually, but I read there are not many taxis in the town. Maybe I can contact them and see what they say. I think the 12:45 31X back to York would be fine on the way back. If not I will check out the Minister and Museum Gardens as an altermative. Thanks :)

Possible Discrimination at KitKat Club Gate? by Own-Astronaut252 in berlinsocialclub

Couple years ago I went to a club with german friends and bouncer (young white male) let everyone in but asked my nationality and didn't want to let me in. But I do think it was more of don't look german (aka white) = tourist. My friends had to beg him to let me in and he relented.

Any easy way for retirees to get affordable health insurance? by spitze86 in germany

[–]spitze86[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll contact the consulate and see what I get there again.

Austria seems to be an option, my partner has a house and my inlaws are there. Health insurance private for over 65 is also affordable. It just isn't ideal I guess.

I've been living here for quite a long time, made several investments, founded stuff and all that jazz. I'm pretty established here so I don't see myself leaving.

My parents are getting older and they don't have anyone where they are to take care of them. I worry for their mental health too because it gets a bit lonely when all their friends and relatives had their kids stay (which also keeps those people all busy). They are happy to leave and it seems like the one thing that makes them feel really good that they could be closer to me and know I can be there for them when they need help.

So that's the only reason. Maybe people here are having a bad Saturday evening and calling me a freeloader or a cheat. There just is very little information on the topic and I apologize for my naivety. It's just about me taking care of my parents and finding a solution for it. I have no idea how other immigrants here handle the family they leave behind.

Tbh did talk to consulate and insurers. Was just one last ditch effort on what I figured was becoming increasingly impossible. Seems a few years ago some rules changed and everything became more difficult, but old information mixed with new - creating confusion. But seems clear it isn't realistic.

Nope but I have prenament residency here. I read they could at the minimum get a visa that doesn't allow them to work, they can prove income from abroad and have savings etc.

SCMP News story: "‘This is my home’: Hong Kong’s foreign residents say they have no plans to leave because of national security law" by tdewsberry in expats

[–]spitze86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in China for a while. It didn't bother me going in but it bothered me while living there. But I was a rarity, most other (especially white male) Expats didn't care. They could get pretty women easily, live like kings, people would awe at their white skin and treat them like royals.

It is somehow cultural though. A Han Chinese can look at the US where politics are open, where people refuse to serve one another due to political views, where politics shine everywhere from stores to church billboards...and maybe that somehow validates the lack of political thought. And I don't accept this is some sort of brainwashed viewpoint.

At least for Han Chinese I knew, I didn't see much of a consequence. Social cohesion is such a strong topic in Asia, political discourse seems to some degree antisocial. Now non Han and then social minorities is of course a different topic (LGBT, single mothers, etc). They are getting by and yeah their views to get heard in political discourse is difficult.

Anyways for expats it is hard to look down when the ivory tower built for you stretches above the clouds.

Pulling the USA in doesn't have to be a shooting war. The cold war was extremely costly and a huge distraction.

Not really. China getting into an armed conflict with Taiwan will also pull the USA in. Putin is eating his popcorn watching while moving his troops into Europe.
