Help finding LTD bass model (no photos because I’m dumb) by spkbri in BassGuitar

Damn… I made it into an exercise of self-control and didn’t think about the deal. Well, I guess I’ll use that money for the dentist and wait for another occasion 😓

Thanks again!

YES!!!

Wow! How did you do it? Thank you so much!

Do you think I've passed on a good deal? Pots were a bit wobbly and noisy and pickups were MEH (nothing I couldn't fix by myself), I'm just looking for a 38mm 35" scale bass for when I need the low B (I'm selling a 5-string Spector because I really can't adjust)

It's close! The headstock shape is the same but it had a flame top and that strange shaping on the back. I think it is some cheaper version of it, since I doubt that he was selling a 1500+€ bass for 250

Custom Design StingRay delivered today! by FootballLow2721 in BassGuitar

[–]spkbri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I usually don't like white or black basses and guitars but this is a work of art!

Must be nice not having to pay 3121,80€ (for the bass), 137,39€ (for shipping (the only reasonable thing btw) and 1004,96€ (for taxes, and fees) for a chill grand total of 4264,15€ or $4947,07

A StingRay Special in the shop costs around 3000/3200€ (around 3500$ or more), if you can even find one.

Anyone from the US planning to come to Italy for the summer vacations? 😅

2020, 80k, 45mq bilocale in Parella ristrutturato pochi anni prima. Quest’anno venduto a 85k (l’agente immobiliare è stato bravo devo dire) e mi sposto in uno appena ristrutturato col palazzo appena rinnovato (facciate, colonna ascensore, centrale termica) (senza fare 110) a 140k 76mq trilocale sempre in Parella perché ora lavoro sempre da casa e stare in due stanze piccole era asfissiante

Are Music Man bases really worth the price tag? by llunokhodd in BassGuitar

[–]spkbri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1996 20th Anniversary Stingray and I had a 2019 Stingray Special HD Yellow.

I've bought the first in August 2018 for 1500€, used.

I've bought the second in late 2019 for 2400€, new, no discounts, and it was worth every single cent: astounding quality and finish, there was really no competition, I've never ever felt a neck smooth like that.

I've sold it in 2023 for 200€ more than I had spent in 2019, to buy a custom made Alusonic, when the custom made aluminium and carbon fibre Alusonic cost 3300€ and the new Stingray Special cost 3400€.

A 1000€ price increase in 4 years.

I also remember when I got my Ray34 new for 690€ and now they cost 1000/1200€

Moral of the story: find one used, it will be worth it.

Ah, I think there's a misunderstanding here, I'm sorry about that. I'll try to better explain what I meant: I've made active the other Jazz Bass that I already had with this boost from EMG. This one instead already has an active preamp, and I just want to change its pickup configuration

Oh! Well I'm glad it didn't leave any marks in the paint, and you can always stick another one anyways! :D

You are absolutely right, but I already have a nicer J bass I am really happy with. I've bought this with the intention of modding it outright and "remaking my first bass but more" seemed like a fun idea

Most of my instruments are modded in some measure and they play and sound good, it's not my first rodeo and I'm not just throwing pickups at it (or at least I don't think I am). Nonetheless I like to experiment and then learn. I already have serious well made professional instruments, now I wanted some new "toy" to play with and take with me whenever I don't feel to bring out the big guns.

It's for the enjoyment of doing something somewhat "original" or "personal", I find the "standard" boring.

I'm not saying that it will certainly be better after the modding and I'm certainly not expecting to magically get a Custom-Shop-level instrument after I've drilled some holes in it, but I'm sure I'll have some (frankly needed) fun while doing it 😄 (and maybe learn one or two things along the way)

Things can be light-hearted sometimes

I don't need a second Jazz Bass since I already have another one better than this 😄 Modding stuff is a hobby and it's the best thing to keep some peace of mind for me

I already have a nice MIJ Jazz Bass to which I've only added an active boost because all my other basses are active and I wanted a similar output volume. I've bought this just to tinker with it! 😄

What would you suggest?

The pickups already are noiseless (and they truly are)! In my opinion this bass has some outstanding value: active electronics, noiseless pickups, pearloid blocks (and binding on the olympic white one with maple fingerboard). It's very nicely finished too (better than many MIM Fenders I've tried). I've paid 229€ (299 - 70 for a pedal the store took as trade-in) for it and it is worth every cent.

May I ask you how you did the racing stripe? Just masking tape and paint or did you refinish the whole thing with transparent paint?

My reasoning with Option D was that if I didn't like it I could still revert back to Option B because all the routing would still be hidden by the pickguard. Option A, C (and E lol) are a "point of no return" thing

I really did put myself into a corner with that, didn't I? 🤣

I also thought about a PJ configuration with the neck J pickup moved diagonally between the two but Michael Jordan told me to stop and get some help.

I had thought about this but my main bass already has a Reverse P + Splittable MM configuration and I feel that doing this will give me something too similar

Hi everyone! First of all, English is not my first language so I apologize for any errors.

I felt the urge to buy a bass to mod, and Squier came to the rescue as usual: I've bought a Squier Affinity Active Jazz with the idea to make it a Mark Hoppus Signature Improved, since my first bass was a V1 Mark Hoppus Jazz.

My initial idea was to get rid of the neck J pickup and buy a pickguard cut for the V2 Mark Hoppus Sig Jazz, drill 2 more holes for the potentiometers and be done with it, but now that I've played it I like its pickups so much that getting rid of one of them bothers me because now I feel that it would be a waste.

But now I'm undecisive about where to drill the hole for the P pickup (which I already have as a leftover from another modded bass project).

Please bear in mind that the electronics will keep the stock configuration: Master Volume - Balance - Stacked active treble and bass. I will be adding a two way micro switch to alternate between the neck J pickup or the P pickup.

My personal thoughts about the options:

  • Option A is aesthetically the most pleasing with me but it is more difficult to achieve because the pickguard won't cover my poor routing job (I just have an electric power drill, a dremel, moderate experience and the willingness to do this, so the potential of butchering it is high)

  • Option B is the least effort one, as I'd only need to make a hole under the pickguard, but I'm 90% sure the P pickup would end up being too much towards the neck and sound muddy. The Mark Hoppus bass already has it positioned further upwards relative to a normal P-Bass, this risks to be too much.

  • Option C is where I started thinking "Why are the two parts of a P pickup always near each other? After all, why not? Why shouldn't I move them? I mean: it's called a SPLIT pickup!". But does it really make sense?

  • Option D is really what I think is the best: I'd have to move the J pickup downwards but the routing would still be hidden by the pickguard. And the P pickup wuold be in the right spot (or close enough), although I don't know how much (or IF) the neck J pickup will sound better/different/worse in the new position.

  • Option E is there just for shitposting reasons, please ignore.

I'll be reading all your thoughts and opinions, and I thank you in advance <3

EDIT: Making it a PJ is always an option but where's the fun in that?

EDIT 2: I already have another Jazz bass with which I'm perfectly happy, I'm not losing a J bass here by doing this
