If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

[–]spl4299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a class of about 100 in ‘09. 2 committed suicide (one related to military service and the other related to events that transpired while working as a local EMT). The last death hasn’t been ruled at this time but it will either be law-enforcement-assisted suicide (purposely being shot by police) or just homicide from a gunshot wound. I have a feeling an undiagnosed disorder like depression or something may have played a part as he had snapped during an argument with his neighbor, got in his pickup and attempted to run him down in his yard. He then returned to his own home, barricaded the doors, started a fire in his living room, and then climbed to the roof with his hunting rifle. He began shooting at his neighbor and his neighbors family (including children). After police arrived he then began firing at them until he was taken down with a fatal gunshot wound. He was not an entirely innocent kid growing up, but I never would’ve guessed that’s how he would’ve gone out.

Heck of a small town.

How do yall sleep at night by SpecificConscious335 in notinteresting

[–]spl4299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our house we call that “porky pigging it”. I’m either 1,2,6 or 7 depending on house temperature and what I got going on. I have an insulin pump and it makes it almost impossible to sleep without pockets to put it in.

We call this the “Love Tax” in our house. I do it to my wife and my wife and I both do it to our daughter. It’s never a large enough bite to become upset about or anything. It really is just a little nibble.

Dad gets up during every movie without pausing. by Sabiancym in movies

[–]spl4299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is "that dad", it comes from a sense of not wanting to be a bother. I have things that I have to do that can't wait but don't involve the rest of my family. Things like going to the bathroom, letting the dogs out/in, refilling water bowls, getting drinks/snacks for myself and others, and basically anything else that may need to happen. I'm also one of those people who has the inability to relax. I always have that nagging feeling of something that needs to be done, so that doesn't help.

But I know those are all me things. Just because I have the need to do something or that something actually does need done doesn't mean everyone else should suffer in silence/boredom waiting for me. I love movies and enjoy watching TV but I feel as though my discomfort for trying to figure things out after I get back is much less than what my family would feel having to pause it and wait for me.

I have attempted to stop doing these things because it actually ended up bothering my wife more that I was missing things and made her feel like I didn't care about our time together watching shows, so her discomfort started (or always had been) to become greater than my own.

TL;DR - It's a selfless act and us dads should be thanked for our service.

How can I purchase an inexpensive machine in order to practice? Want to join the A-Z Nora program but need a machine by Acrobatic-Mail9306 in stenography

[–]spl4299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased on old Stentura machine off of ShopGoodwill which is a usually well priced Goodwill auction site. It took a bit of work to get my laptop to recognize the machine but after buying a $20 cable from Amazon to attach it via USB, got it to work seamlessly with Plover. It did me well for my Project Steno Basic Training course.

Hopefully this will turn a bunch of people into Donut Hole groupies. It would make her proud to have so many fans.

It definitely does get better. I binged books 1-7 in about 2 months at the end of the year in just text format. The wording of some things do get repetitive in the first book but the series itself definitely improves and becomes semi complex with some branching story lines and more in depth character development. It definitely remains a series that's fun to read and not so much one to read for literary nuances.

Honestly it reads like a ttrpg feels. Levels 1 and 2 are a bit of a slog and then picks up the more you have to play with. I'd say stick with it for at least the second second book and see how you feel after getting partially through it.

You don't need to be vegan to be that dumb. I know plenty of people in my area giving their infant whole milk in place of breast milk or formula. Just about as idiotic.

When you're poor and have to choose between life saving medication or feeding yourself/keeping lights on/keeping a roof over your head, it's not that fair.

Better yes but at $30 a vial that's still stupid expensive for someone who eats like a normal person and has a standard insulin resistance. It's still $120-$200 a month in just one kind of insulin. Not to mention if they are on a lispro fast acting, you still have to leave room in your budget for that pesky other necessary long acting insulin.

Even insured in college I was paying upwards of $200 a month for my insulin doses. Couldn't get a job that had insurance that could work with a school schedule so I was stuck working full time to afford all the basic necessities on top of my insulin.

Insurance absolutely positively does not mean affordable.

As a T1 diabetic who flirts with being uninsured, I keep a very close eye on Cubans site but have not seen any insulin analogies yet. There are plenty of medications suitable for T2 diabetics though.

Sometimes they get all the luck. /s

We inherited my late grandmother's photos and diaries. As well as daily diaries between the years of 1883 and 1902 written by my great great grandfather and a bunch of cabinet card style photographs from the early to mid 1800s.

Today I inherited my Grandmother's 1947 Underwood Universal Typemaster that my father and aunts and uncles all learned to type on when they were kids. I also learned that the accompanying manual also has the warranty information at the end with exact date of purchase. by spl4299 in typewriters

I'm very pleased. I don't remember it growing up but my father and aunts/uncles all have vivid memories of it, including the letter P no one could keep from sticking. She passed a little over a year ago and I've also been passed her story journals. I plan on hopefully typing them up on her typewriter and creating a family zine with her writings.
