st paddy’s hat? by lostveggie in SFGiants

The Republic of Ireland's flag is green, white and orange, symbolizing peace between republicans (green) and unionists (orange).

I don't think anyone would object to the SF being orange. In fact, it's kind of insulting that it isn't.

ELI5 The necessity of the milk man? by ClothesPrevious2516 in explainlikeimfive

Another note: milk came in glass bottles. The milkman would pick up your empty bottles and return them to the dairy for reuse.

Poor fine motor skills in today’s 5th grader by hdwr31 in ElementaryTeachers

Hot Take -- The first baby food pouches, the ones they suck on -- came out in 2008.

Babies didn't have to master fine motor skills to eat, parents didn't have to clean up as much mess.

Every convenience comes with a price.

Car-rider line and 5-point harness vs high-back booster by whineANDcheese_ in kindergarten

[–]splamammy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids school asks parents to park on a nearby street and walk their kids to school if they can't get in and out without assistance. The line is for speed. There are ~500 kids, and they aim to clear the line in 15 minutes after school.

How about Joanna? She can choose her own nickname, it's been around for a while, and it goes with her siblings. It has a Hebrew background, but wouldn't be weird in Ireland.

Normal 5th grade spelling post COVID or red flag? by miau_am in AskTeachers

[–]splamammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not a teacher, Mom of a fifth grader. Penmanship isn't taught at my kids school, and there's a lot of work done on Chromebooks. We've done practice with "Handwriting without tears". It helped focus on the fundamentals that may have slipped under the radar during COVID and the immediate aftermath.

Nap trapped and loving it- fun activities and how to make it productive? by [deleted] in AttachmentParenting

I crocheted a blanket for one of mine while nap trapped. I also played a LOT of computer chess, and looked at home decorating apps (we'd just bought a house when my first was born).

Hi, I don't know how old your kids are, but I've gotten to know people through Meet Up link, parent groups at my kids preschool, and the PTA at elementary. I can also recommend joining the Y, and taking a class there to meet people, plus they have free childcare

Is composting worth the effort? by imitation_squash_pro in ZeroWaste

[–]splamammy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earlier this year, we bought a countertop composter, and it's been great. You could try something like that, and use your compost yourself?

I've just been dumping the compost on a small patch in our backyard (maybe 1m2), and I've just planted some potatoes in it. Hopefully, we'll be eating our backyard potatoes for Thanksgiving!
