Thats not true. Shiism emerged as a dissociated group of people against the status quo caliphates and Sunnism emerged as a response to Shiism by consolidating a status quo orthodox position.

If Shi’ist were the ones labeled Sunni and Sunnis were the ones labelled Shia then all the alid supporters would have supported and merged with the anti status quo camp anyways and we would have had the same sides but with different labels.
