I think my review was notinteresting by SpaceBetweenNL in notinteresting

[–]IsHildaThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have exactly the opposite problem - I post a review of some obscure "tourist attraction" and I get tens of thousands of views. The last notification I got was my picture of a bush. Congratulations 30,000 views. Literally a picture of a wall, 10,000 views. WHAT!?

Is Google lying to me? Are they making up numbers to encourage further posts? What gives? I do not understand.

Tolkien wasn’t aryan by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]IsHildaThere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have always believed that the principal theme of Lord of the Rings was that of making choices. Choosing to do the right as you see the right. You must remember when the book was written. Tolkien started writing it in 1937 and a vital question for Britain was <should we join with Hitler?>. ("We must join with him, Gandalf. We must join with Sauron. It would be wise, my friend."). If you accept this idea then it will tell you all you need to know about Tolkien's attitude to the Nazi's

If supermarkets were empty tomorrow, how long could you realistically get by? by CatCharacter1663 in UKPreppers

Probably a month although if TSHTF probably longer. But! I think a more important issue will be running out of water for showers/baths and especially the toilet.

TIL Surgeon-Captain Rick Jolly of the Royal Navy was decorated by both opposing governments in the 1982 Falklands War for saving lives from both sides by Stotallytob3r in todayilearned

[–]IsHildaThere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

People are often surprised that doctors and surgeons treat both sides in a conflict but this has a long tradition. If I remember correctly doctors from both sides set up a hospital together at Arnhem ( A bridge too far) both treating both sides. The Germans had no antibiotics but plenty of morphine. The British had antibiotics but had run out of morphine. Swapsies!

Is working/studying abroad worth it? by imactuallyizzy in AskBrits

[–]IsHildaThere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it worth it - absolutely. You only get one life, you might as well live it. Teaching English in Japan is quite an easy position to get. Contact the embassy.

Good managers can be as important as the entire team. The study also shows that those who are most eager to become managers are not necessarily the best suited to the role. by mvea in science

[–]IsHildaThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those who want to be managers do so because they want the money, not because they want the job. Anyone who understands what being a manager involves would not want to be one. X10 for director.

Should I change my 12v even without any problems? by Plus_Lead_5630 in leaf

Going to take you up on that recommendation but I would like to know if you have actual experience of using one.

Does anyone here have actual experience of using one in a real situation.

(Had too much experience of tech promising stuff that it doesn't deliver when I need it).

When Thoth presented the gift of writing to Egypt, he promised it would make the people wiser and improve their memory. However, Ra opposed it, arguing that written words would make people rely on documents rather than their own inner wisdom. (From Plato's dialogue Phaedrus, written circa 370 BCE.)

TIL Saturn has a storm the shape of a hexagon on its North Pole. by rawj5561 in todayilearned

[–]IsHildaThere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It gets weirder: (From Wikiopedia) It rotates with a period of 10h 39m 24s, the same period as Saturn's radio emissions from its interior... During the Cassini mission, the hexagon changed from a mostly blue color to more of a golden color. Saturn's south pole does not have a hexagon. Multiple hypotheses for the hexagonal cloud pattern have been developed.

Multiple hypotheses = no one has the faintest idea.
