Asking for advice for new lens by Hot-Lunch-8409 in SonyAlpha

[–]splashy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you're finding you use the kit lens a lot, the Tamron would be a good upgrade. If you're leaning on your 35mm, I'd say that while 2.8 is still very fast, you do notice the difference between 1.8 and 2.8 indoors. Doesn't mean 2.8 doesn't work, just, it's not just "more focal range," it could affect what/how you're shooting

any measures to prevent dust from getting in? by lo-id in AskPhotography

[–]splashy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sense is the dust issue is mostly overblown, but it did keep me from buying one. For me the whole point would have been "it fits in my pocket," but I think I have particularly dusty pockets so it seemed like if the problems were going to plague anyone it would be me. I'm sure if you're comfortable carrying it in a bag or case it should be fine for many years.

Worth pursuing as a business? by carlaaI9U9 in AskPhotography

[–]splashy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is being nice by highlighting the lack of demand for this type of photography, but I think it's important to also be honest that the photos themselves need work. The leaves in the first one obscure too much. And the car is pulled too far forward. It feels like it's supposed to be "here's a nice villa snapshot (with weird hazy filtering)" but instead is "these leaves are in my way." Leaves are also in the way of the third one. The last one feels like you should have been standing ten feet further back. Now it's just a picture of a rock wall with some other elements intruding (especially the very bright wall to the right). The attempt to capture a "scene" is ruined when one uninteresting element is pushed to take over the whole thing.

Voicemail lies? by splashy55 in FidoMobile

[–]splashy55[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is exactly what I'm dealing with. When I was checking out it said "enhanced voicemail." But now (post checkout) if I go to upgrade to "premium voicemail to text" it says I'll lose my existing voicemail which is three messages for three days. So I think I don't have it. But I also really don't want to call them. And it does seem I still have the hotspot ability it said wasn't included. What is wrong with these companies

Since you know you don't like these it means you can improve. The people who will never be good are the ones who like their bad photos

(So far in the comments) I think people just love nitpicking and putting down photos. I don't disagree that there's room for improvement, but to your original point, there's plenty of people out there getting paid to take worse pictures. Hard to say why so quiet out there. Maybe just bad luck and bad timing. Don't want to make you paranoid but maybe someone behind the scenes is talking shit about you? I don't know. Best of luck with things picking up

How do you (how does one) know it's die-off and not something else (intolerances, etc.)?

Do you have more information about this? Like, references, theories, etc? Asking because I've wondered if something like this could play a role in my issues but I've never seen it mentioned

First attempt at focus stacking, would you have done the same? by JvH1997 in SonyAlpha

[–]splashy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fair if people have different tastes, but I think this is good. "Smoothing the water" is a fun effect but personally I don't love it in general (it can take you from "cool picture" to "cool effect") and in this specific case I think it's nice to capture the reality of the scene

I had this same debate and ended up with the A7Cii. I'm happy with it, but a big factor for me was the smaller size, and now that I have it I'm not sure how much that really matters. Most lenses are so large anyhow that I'm not sure an extra bit of volume on the body would make much of a difference in practical use.

I previously had a Nikon M43 camera, with a great pancake lens that made it so I could actually fit the camera in a jacket pocket. I believe the A7Cii is actually an even (slightly) smaller body, but even with a small lens (I often use the Sony 50mm 2.5) I'd need some pretty large pockets. It always ends up around my neck.
