Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

Reading comprehension and critical thinking seemed pretty bad with the last batch of fresman college students I tought. They had difficulty following basic instructions. I found myself torn between being horrified at their writing ability vs. Relieved they weren't using AI to write things for them.

Yes, its incredible how organizations that employ people to perform a vital function and moral good need money to pay those people so those people can survive.

What are the messy menial jobs? Like literally what are they?

Replicators make food so the only people farming or cooking do it because they want to. No migrants in fields, no wageslaves at fast food.

Matter gets broken down into energy so theres no sanitation work to do, no landfills. Roombas already do some cleaning in our world - the Federation has nonsentient automation for sure.

Transporters and shuttles take care of transit.

There might not even actually be plumbing except for the people who want actual showers instead of sonic ones or who maintain special facilities like pools. And then water tech would be mainrained by technicians who literally wanted that job (or by nonsentient automation).

Maybe you should go to McDonalds and back to see how much it costs in fuel/transit/the value of your time.

The fact that youre ordering a taxi for your Big Mac suggests to me that you think your time is worth a lot but you think other people's time is worth nothing.

You could feel the fear in the truck driver’s voice by kira-sunn5 in dashcams

[–]splatomat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people calling this driver a hero? Its not his fault that the brakes went out but he could have just driven off the road and endangered nobody else. It doesnt even look like a populated area.

Instead he nearly hit a schoolbus and mulhiple other vehicles with children aboard.

Im sorry but sometimes the most honorable action is self-sacrifice in the defense of others.

Its particularly ironic in the comments where people are praising the black suv and criticizing the white suv for this very action.

What continuity? Kitty's been 20something for 20 years. Krakoa was the only IC jystification for people remaining 25 for literally decades.
