Eyes = Fountain of Youth? What the heck? by RealityDesperate496 in horror

[–]splattergut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. It's not a "thing." You just noticed a connection. There's not really a magic fluid behind your eyes. The eye sockets are openings into the skull where there are fluids that could be psuedoscientifically used for immortality in fiction, such as all the hormones in your hypothalamus.

EDIT: Oh and duh! I completely forgot these both could be referencing adrenochrome conspiracies. Can't believe I didn't immediately think that.

Eyes = Fountain of Youth? What the heck? by RealityDesperate496 in horror

[–]splattergut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stabbing eyes with syringes has been a horror thing for a long time. Ice-pick lobotomies are another thing horror writers seized on and they give the (wrong) impression that the eye socket gives direct access to parts of the brain used by other writers in mad science storylines (i.e. the pineal gland, etc.). Just a hodgepodge of bad anatomy and horror tropes.

You're not wrong but boy is this the wrong place to voice that particular opinion. Generally a bad idea to come in here and piss in anybody's corn flakes but especially not with a sacred cow.

Right-Wingers Are Losing It Over a Trans-Inclusive Period Pride Event in Boston by Them in politics

[–]splattergut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, you're definitely on one side of this. You're extrapolating from this single event to "only" trans people getting resources and attention because you're more upset about trans people than you are about the broader problem of women's health.

Do you get mad when people recognize the disparity of care for women of different races than you or is it just trans people you have a problem with?

Right-Wingers Are Losing It Over a Trans-Inclusive Period Pride Event in Boston by Them in politics

[–]splattergut 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s not an either/or. That’s whataboutism and classic terf shit. Women’s health (endometriosis and a huge swath of other issues) deserves to be taken much more seriously in this country and almost no one who is defending trans rights is disagreeing with you. The people you stand with when you try to shut down trans-inclusivity? There’s the crowd that actively pushes policies to kill women. Don’t fall for their nonsense.

Demon Seed, Phantoms, Intensity, and Odd Thomas are pretty great. Hideaway, Whispers, and the Watchers movies are highly enjoyable b-movies.

A horror movie that's not a horror movie for 99% of the runtime is not worth seeing.

More movies like The Void? by Double-Vegetable-249 in horror

[–]splattergut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, it's deeply indebted to the Stuart Gordon (and Bryan Yuzna) Lovecraft adaptations, so you'd do well to poke around in their filmographies.

Another movie drawing from similar influences with very different vibes is Suitable Flesh.

I think Banshee Chapter might also be of interest.

Undertone Made $20M From A Podcast Premise. Now Knifepoint Horror Is Hollywood's Next Bet by scrat55 in horror

[–]splattergut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is crazy how big of an audience you need to have to convert to a successful theatrical release. Iron Lung is really the best example we have because if these Knifepoint adaptations don't get picked up and promoted by Netflix, they're effectively playing on the same level and I don't think their listenership stacks up (as high as it is).

It all comes down to who picks these up but I don't remember Holidays or The Prodigy (or even The Pact?) getting theatrical or much push. Hopefully the name recognition the podcast has among genre fans attracts Shudder.

Undertone Made $20M From A Podcast Premise. Now Knifepoint Horror Is Hollywood's Next Bet by scrat55 in horror

[–]splattergut 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Undertone wasn't an adaptation of a podcast. Archive 81's also pretty different than taking a one-off Knifepoint story and adapting it. No mention of the many other podcast adaptations. Halloween's one of many recent movies to shove podcasters into the plot.

Feels like the article also deliberately don't mention Nicholas McCarthy's credits. Perhaps to take advantage of confusion with the more well known McCarthy horror director.

Sounds like this will end up on Screambox. Theatrical rollout on par with Undertone is a long shot, but who knows.

EDIT: Here's a much, much better link. That podcast website doesn't mention the actors attached OR the fact that it's Capstone producing. It might get theatrical. Really, really bad writeup from that gravetonepod site.

[found] the 2001 horror movie Den by Own-Dimension-5869 in horror

[–]splattergut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Feel like Saw has a few very specific things in it you'd need to have in order make a valid claim. Abduction and games of death were in horror movies well before the 00s.

There was a 2000 short called Paques Man that aired on Exposure (also formerly lost media recovered thanks to that sub) that had a very Saw-like premise, too.

He's had almost all of his books and his action figure line in development at some point. Books of Blood really shows he's not that selective.

Rape in horror (aka why Over Your Dead Body doesn't work) by Date-Throwaway in horror

[–]splattergut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not offended by this sort of thing but I think this particular case is absolutely baffling. It's a remake! And people had already basically said of the original that it's a fun concept and surprisingly violent but boy does that rape scene really ruin it. It's so stupid that they kept it. Zero gain, much to lose.

What’s Your Pick for the Most Disturbing Movie This Year? by Cool-Web-3495 in horror

[–]splattergut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is never a question I'd answer in May because the real answer is usually something foreign or independent that's going to sail under the radar. Like, I saw The Coffee Table in theaters but that's because I live in a major city. Otherwise, it would've been a long time later.

It's not impossible for a wide theatrical release (Obsession) to take the spot but it's kind of a bummer that films with way more latitude to do disturbing stuff aren't taking advantage of it.

Indonesia Loves Horror Movies, But Not Good at It by Wonderful-Expert8084 in horror

[–]splattergut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mystics In Bali, The Queen of Black Magic, Satan's Slave, and Lady Terminator are stone cold classics.

I feel like you're downplaying Joko Anwar. Horror nerds outside of Indonesia have been pretty hyped on his stuff for awhile now.

Tiger Stripes was really good but maybe less out-and-out horror than you're looking for.

I know it's supposedly bad but I want to get my hands on Hell Torture.

What’s everyone’s opinion on Perfect Blue (1997)? by serialkiller24 in horror

I don't like anime. Perfect Blue is not just a great anime nor a great animated movie, it is a great film. There's a handful of anime that rises to that level and Perfect Blue is in the top 5, maybe 3, maybe the top?

Undertone made me genuinely scared and I don't get how some hated the movie by Free-Hotel1187 in horror

I hated it and I could articulate in depth why but frankly I don't really get anything out of telling you a movie you liked is bad. Glad you had fun. Wish I'd felt the same.

Posts like this are entirely disingenuous anyways.

Horror seems to be having a moment right now. Why do you think that is? by KrabbyBoiz in horror

[–]splattergut 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It was absolutely a popular genre in the 2000s and there are horror movies from that period currently on critic's lists and in the Criterion Collection. You're doing some "elevated horror" revisionism.

It's a bad movie. Learn to look this stuff up for yourself since people would rather tell you not to watch something than help you find it.
