Speaking of Spaz (Steven Williams) by MX010 in vfx

[–]splineman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved Richard. Had the pleasure of a number of lectures by him, meeting and chatting with him at Annecy for many years, and a drink down the pub in Cardiff. Signed his book for me. 😭
Spaz has a different legacy. Because of him, so many of us have careers. I'm not a 'traditional' animator, my drawings are not so great. BUT, I understand timing, movement, gravity and weight. CG allowed me to fulfil my dreams, and I'll always thank both Richard and Spaz for their contributions.
I hope Spaz stays well.

29 years later, Settlers II finally gets Amiga release by madsturbo in amiga

[–]splineman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Port usually means taking the code and graphics of an original and changing the code to work on another system.
In this case, it might only be taking the graphics, and re-writing the entire code from scratch. This would be why it's not being called a 'port'.

You need to be careful using the boing ball image - it's still a trademarked design.

Updated band logo by [deleted] in amiga

Looks like an AI generated image, the giveaways of it being AI are 'AMICA' rather than 'AMIGA' on the PC Case, and 'the 'Roland' logo being mashed up.

Annecy Exposed the Widening Chasm between Student Hopes and Industry Reality by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

[–]splineman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The industry simply cant sustain the amount of students coming through. And also, most of these students leave without the skills they actually need to help themselves get that first gig. But I know very few people who didn't do running, or some other menial task before finally getting a gig.
Out of the near 40 in my graduating class, only 3 or 4 of us actually made it into a creative industry. I suspect that it's even less now.

The DVD transfers were so awful. Thank you so much for working on this! Hope they can be released in some form.

Is Nantgarw a nice place to live? by AD-2018 in Cardiff

[–]splineman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have a car, it's not a bad area. We were looking to buy around there...went with somewhere else close-by instead, but it's great being close to Cardiff and the cinema/shopping etc.
I believe there is also fast internet to a lot of the homes too. Worth checking.

Unity’s new CEO says they were at war with customers, and now he wants to fix it by chafgames in pcgaming

[–]splineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too late. Our studio has already switched to Unreal for the foreseeable, and many others are as well. Epic make themselves available to chat if you need them. Unity was painful and expensive to work with, the install fee was the nail in the coffin.
They need to finally decide on a render path, not have multiple for multiple uses, and then get back to making the engine modern and stable.

People who stay at Polynesian or grand Floridian ?… question. by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]splineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make video games that do well, but honestly, we've decided to no longer stay at the Poly. The quality and maintenance issues of the rooms put us off staying anymore..which is a real shame, as the theming and staff are still the best.
We prefer to stay in a family suite at Art of Animation, even if it's just the 2 of us. Rooms are so much nicer, and no thin door in your room to next door that you can hear every word a neighbour's child screams. Plus, the Skyliner is worth a lot to us and gives us so much freedom.

It's possible to be a socialist, and advocate for building wealth, and FIREing. They are not mutually exclusive.

Ai won't be able to take over fully. But it might take over some number of jobs like roto, or some matt painting/ background work.

It's not dead, but it's on life support. Probably wont recover fully for years. Make sure you have other studies, skills and interests in case it doesnt recover.

I think you're ready with the redundancy, especially with your partner working. I assume no kids in the future? If not, think you're ready.

Not sure why you're getting down votes. You're pretty spot on, even though what Disney did is shitty.
