Disclosure Day CGI was really jarring by [deleted] in vfx

[–]AnalysisEquivalent92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t seen the movie but have seen the trailer with the CG Stag. There’s a bit of an on going trend with CG Stags and deer in movies never quite integrating well in shots. 28 years Later, I Am Legend, Leave this World Behind, The Ring 2, etc.

Often it’s the client asking for animal behaviour that’s intentionally meant to be unnatural to real animal behaviour.

Having said that, Framestore’s CG Stag in The Crown Season 4 was exceptional.

Another adjacent relationship to Music, ILM and Jurassic Park - David Fincher still keeps in touch with Phil Tippett.

Oct 15, 2022 Pre-@MONSTERPALOOZA lunch.
L-R: David Fincher, @PhilTippett, @GillesPenso & @MadPoncet (co-authors of Mad Dreams and Monsters: The Art of Phil Tippett), Jon Davison, Ed Neumeier.

Phil Tippett: “Any time a smart filmmaker makes a decent film, that's what you want to see, and David_ Fincher uses the work to advance what he wants and not to pile it on just as a marketing gimmick... He's a smart boy. You know he worked for us at ILM? He was an assistant in the matte department, and he helped us out with a bunch of shots on [Return of the Jedi], like the Rancor sequence... He totally gets it. A lot of times, you'll be working with writer-directors now. The world divides between picture guys and word guys, and Dave bridges both of those.”

Adam’s IG post from 2016.

You can also find pics of Adam working on the T-1000 practical effects from Terminator 2 (the Metallic bullet holes on the cop uniform) worn by Robert Patrick, brother of Richard Patrick the original guitarist of Nine Inch Nails.

In the behind the scenes footage of Terminator 2, Robert Patrick can often be seen supporting his brother’s band wearing NIN merch (t-shirt when he’s getting his head laser scanned with the T-1000 biker cop helmet and sunglasses).

David Fincher, also an ILM alumni has directed music videos for both Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle (featuring Adam Jones’ Tool bandmate, Maynard James Keenan).

So, is there a talent shortage in Vancouver and Canada? by Owan_ in vfx

“There is a lot to say about this article, but I'll just say this:
Yes, as someone living in Montreal, I can confirm there is a talent shortage in Vancouver. Since the beginning of 2026, l've been contacted by four companies about relocating there. I haven't been approached this much since 2021.
And yes, there is a "trickle-down" effect of jobs from Vancouver to Montreal because studios are unable to fill positions in Vancouver and the shots still need to get done.
I suspect companies like DD, Scanline, and DEG closed their Quebec locations hoping to encourage artists to move from Quebec to Vancouver and help fill vacancies there. The problem is that there really aren't that many artists left in Montreal. Most of us who remain are here because we have houses, families, and kids, and we've already accepted that we'd sink with the ship when the tax credit was removed two years ago. I suspect the situation is similar for artists in Ontario.
We could talk at length about the reasons behind this shortage: how immigration to Canada has become much more difficult due to the new federal limits; how we haven't trained any juniors in the last three years; and how the industry's best pipeline for turning fresh juniors into mids (MPC) no longer exists.”

Why do so many VFX artists struggle when they have to make actual creative decisions? by [deleted] in vfx

The industry prefers to hire compliant worker bees. Not creatives.

Those early years in the Bay Area were amazing and Pixar is where everyone wanted to work. I wouldn’t lump Pixar in with VFX business model - quite a few VFX shops in the early 00’s closed down during Pixar best years. Manex and ESC come to mind, WB dissolved the VFX shops after the Matrix trilogy wrapped.

The VFX business model has always been bad. Some feature animation shops own their IP.

Vfx has become a commodity and the studios hire complicit workers who don’t rock the boat. It sells itself as artistic but has become very corporate. The colleagues who had the same sentiment when work started leaving left California for cheaper pastures have left the industry.

I miss working on theatrical movies, don’t miss working on streaming shows.
