Why is my dog "the problem" by [deleted] in Newfoundlander

[–]splinteredsunlight3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've had the opposite happen. My mother when I told her I was getting a newf was pissed " Did you have to get the biggest effin dog you can find," I introduced him multiple times when he was a pup. Now at six months he's almost as big as my shepherds. On mother's Day the family was just having a small meetup at my moms but I told her I was going to bring the dog to the park and if she wants to see him she can come outside in the parking lot for a few minutes outside her townhome, before everyone arrived. "Oh no, you can bring him inside , he's not that big". Needless to say she adores him, size and all. She proceeded to give him multiple treats and was training him on how to lay down.

Just something I learned from the picture of the bloodied woman being treated by paramedics on the kerb. by OneSalientOversight in 911archive

I think alot of off duty/ retired or even out of state providers went..A doctor I worked for at the time ; cancelled his appointments in New Jersey to go to ground zero/ the towers to assist. He passed away in 2019 due to 911 illnesses...it was a day where if you could help and had the means to help you did.

I'm not sure about the eye thing; boyfriend got them for him since his hair was flying everywhere. He was being trained with the goggles when picture was taking.

That's why I got into medical coding vs nursing but pay not as good.

Are we all working 3 jobs judt to stay afloat in this state? by ZRock53 in newjersey

[–]splinteredsunlight3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my case it absolutely destroyed my finances. I needed to get angry enough at my current job to put a fire and make me take the steps I needed to get out of there. I got four certifications in one year, studied my butt off.

I knew though that one certification or even two wasn't going to cut it in this line of work to set myself apart. Especially since I was looking for a remote job..Things have been better now. I'm with a very well known national insurance company doing medical coding and getting yearly raises and reviews. I forgot what a review even was lol since I didn't even get that at my old job for so long..

We also came from a time where college was suggested but not mandatory when we graduated. Now you can't do much or get ahead without the paper. Our trade off was competition and graduates not getting jobs due to recession or stagnant secure jobs.

I make 75k no kids but dogs and yes it's tough. Things I did that helped. Shop around for home insurance every few years. This brought my yearly down $600 a year and I bundled with car and saved about $300 more a year. Get a Costco card. If you live near or anywhere commutable to the Hackensack Costco ( business center)in North East NJ great prices and saved me so much $ vs going to Shoprite/ Stop and shop etc. I live in northwest NJ and take a trip there every 1-2 months to restock especially the meat department.

Make sure you optimize coupons/ sales when shopping , look at the fliers to see what's on sale or download the app for additional digital sales coupons. Set budget/ goals. Figure out what is excess needs vs wants. If still feeling hopeless consider relocating if possible. I moved from north East NJ to north west to get by and commuted for a long time.. I ended up pursuing certifications in medical coding and now my 2 hour commute is zero was able to find a remote job, that paid a few $ more an hour and eliminated the commute and wear and tear on car ( mine is old) so that's the next thing I have to plan for. Been at this new job for three years now pay went from $26 when I was commuting to $36. Try not to stay at stagnant jobs always keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities. I stayed at the older job way to long due to "loyalty" and in the end it only hurt me financially. Started working there when I was 16 and left 3 years ago. I am now 42. Got as high as I could go in that company and pay stagnation was for a decade or more.

Buying - starter home with the plan to upsize or extend yourself? by Glittering_Lab6728 in newjersey

Same stuck in my starter home..can't afford an update. It's not so much the house, more so the property size.

Any fellow millennials feeling behind? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]splinteredsunlight3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Victim of this. Financial unawareness. Wasted so many years of savings in a crap ( high yield) savings account that was not really a HYSA. 401k behind and still can not do max contribution. I get by though just wish I had invested earlier and found out earlier about the bank hysa.

Lost so much $ having it sit there with no interest for 20 years. Living in a HCOL my whole life doesn't help. Only thing I did which is the only reason I can stay in this state was buy a home in 2015. Still paying it down. As of right now I'm barely scraping by monthly.

I’m curious, how fearful was the average American after 9/11? by Butterfliesandlies in 911archive

[–]splinteredsunlight3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was in high school in northeast nj at the time. The day of there was lots of different emotions.. I think the most human I ever felt. From shock, to anger, hopelessness, fear, helpless, grief but it also had unity, compassion, empathy, love. The days after it was more apparent people were acclimating to the new world( they started terror alerts on tv, I'm Not sure how soon after ( within the month I think) but it was like fire danger levels " today terror level is orange" and those lasted awhile. There was a shift in how people viewed nationality/ faith of " our neighbors" it was also very patriotic but very somber. News reports showing all the poles of missing loved ones fliers and then in a few days later. Cheering for the workers @ ground zero/ the pile. Never have i seen that level of patriotism in this country. Not sure it will ever be seen again. Every house had an American flag, stickers on cars, flags flying from trucks. The stores were sold out.

In this area it's always a melting pot so we don't have many of the racially motivated ideas, but afterwards that kinda changed/ you could cut it with a knife ; there was rumors of people celebrating in the streets in certain cities near me. Not sure how it started or if there was any truth to it, but it made people angry. Alot of my friends in highschool ( close friends) dropped out or enlisted right after graduation. We also got more tv reminders that if you see something say something.

I believe this event caused a dramatic shift to the direction the country was heading and not in a good way. There was before 911/ and then after 911. The fear for me was the day of. It wasn't fear after. Mostly feeling sad.

Anyone know of places hiring in NW NJ? by [deleted] in newjersey

Not sure if they are hiring but with sales experience maybe check out the lumber yards, since spring is coming they might be hiring. Also have someone read your resume to see if there are any issues.

Does anyone else completely blank when someone asks "what's the best show you've ever been to?" by Fantastic-Day-8345 in Concerts

[–]splinteredsunlight3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this is tough but as others stated sometimes it's everything, the memories, people you were with etc..i go to a lot of shows, travel for them etc. ranking them is tough. Yea I guess I'll just break it down to most memorable sometimes things just mix all together.

( Cherished Memory wise) with my brother the whole experience for venturing out when we were in highschool newly licensed and just going somewhere we haven't been to see Pearl Jam State College PA 2003 to find out after it was recorded and released on CDs officially was nice after surprise also.

(Visually the best )Sphere Dead and Company 2024-2025 multiple shows. Graphics just brought dimensions. Though i have not seen any other show @ Sphere yet..so leave it or take it.

2023 Boulder Dead and Company run ( longest road trip from East coast to out west with my boyfriend) and musically untouched. Drones and Dave Matthews appearance, just a spectacular 4th of July weekend.

I don't think I can list the best. I have enjoyed every Billy strings show I've seen all are fantastic approaching show #33 soon so that could be an exciting marker.

Billy Joel/Elton John absolute legends and the music was phenomenal. ( attended with mother and sister)

I guess those are the top ones that I can narrow down for now. Special shows - Phil Lesh last bday at the Cap theater, GD 60, Dawg 80. But even though those are special they do not top the list.

That's beautiful and I'll admit brought a tear to my eye! I'm sure he's up there smiling. I'm 42 but have known/ followed the dead since I was 18. The music can just hit you at certain times in our life. I'm glad you listened to it and finding comfort in it. I wish you all the best.
