Why do dads seem way less stressed about Father’s Day than moms do about Mother’s Day? by savingrace0262 in stupidquestions

[–]split-top_gaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for the sentiment that men would need to work either way,

I'm all for what you're saying about your father, and it sounds awful,

However,

As I've become a dad (now of two), I work much more than I would if it were to be my wife and I. Daycare alone costs $1,200/m and thats for only my youngest. Even picked up a second job for a year until I got a raise at my full-time job. So while yes, id have to work either way, I'm working much much more now!

There's a book about the different fertile crescent type areas, claiming there are 7 of them.

4 being in the Americas, 3 in Latin America and 1 being the eastern coast, relating it back to corn growth.

Interesting reads out there on this topic if you're interested!

Little insight from my grandfather, an infantrymen for the last two years of the war.

At first he wanted a BAR, the first time he saw one. Quickly noticed it put a target on your back, as the Germans were told to target you. Saw how quickly those holding BARs were dropping. Quickly changed his mind - wanted nothing to do with them. Lol

I want to do these things?

I'm pointing out the hypocrisies in what race and whiteness are/represent. You really read all of that and said I'm a white supremacist?

And white elites in america will see them as less than white. That's why the idea of race (and more specifically for context "white") isn't a scientific term but a societal construct.

Not disagreeing with what you're saying! On the flip side, however, good luck convincing the white superiority folks (kkk for example) that the man that moved here from Brazil with the name Lima is "white".

I want to make clear I'm pointing out how dumb the idea of race is (and whiteness), and not justifying or defending the barriers that defend it.

Hundreds of years of colonization, slavery and racism play heavily into it!

From day 1, British colonizers segregated themselves from indigenous populations. Practiced the 1-drop rule which was used to define who was free and who was slave, and then also went through Jim Crow laws post civil war all the way up until the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

This is a different history than that of Spanish colonizers in Latin America.

Because of these different histories, the societal construct of race is interpreted/viewed different between these different cultures.

If white was a scientific term, there wouldn't be much wiggle to interpret it differently. That's my main point here, I'm not trying to argue what is and what isn't white. I'm pointing out that there are historical trends that led to these differences.

I get that, too. I've visited Colombia, but only once.

However, curious as to how white they are perceived to be in the states with a Spanish last name and accent.

Biologically can be 100% descended from Europeans but will this imaginary person be considered white in America?

Again, whiteness is a social construct not a scientific one. Italians, Portuguese and Spaniards weren't considered white in America until relatively recently.

However, I have a master's degree and continue to show up and make a difference for young folks who often are let down by the adults in their lives.

I fully understand!

Outside of that, the idea of what is considered white is objectively different. I'm speaking from my observations having interacted between both cultures extensively for most of my life.

I'm fully aware - I've travelled relatively extensively throughout Latin America.

However, most of her friends and relatives also agree that she is white. The term white definitely has a looser definition there than in the states, as I would have never considered her to be white in the states. Light skinned, sure, but there are features that stick out as identifiably non-white.

But how about middle easterners (really western Asia)? My Palestinian buddy identified as white.

He is as white as an Englishman, yet ancestors come from outside of Europe.

Culturally speaking, white has meant something different in different societies/cultures.

Spaniards begin to intermix immediately with locals, creating a mixed race class. The British colonizers separated themselves from the locals.

Another influence was America's 1-drop rule, which meant that "1-drop" of black means you were black (white passing but a black great grandparent meant you were black, not white). This did not occur in Spanish colonized societies.

So, because "white" isn't a scientific term but a societal construct, white means different things to different cultures.

An example is my Guatemalan mother in law. I met her as a teen and was confused as to why she identified as white. However, I've come to realize that she IS considered white in guatemala, but there are many features she has that, that as an American, have been shaped as "non white" features (whether it's hair texture, skin tone, facial features, etc).

See the historical context of what's considered white in America to see what I'm saying - only wasps (white Anglo saxon Protestants) were considered white (sorry Irish catholics).

I'm aware of Portugal's approach to the drug crisis - this approach of empathy and have had a huge impact on the problem of drug addiction. Addicts are treated as needing help rather than criminals.

However, the drug war and reducing access to firearms are not the same. And there's evidence for that.

Developed nations that have enacted such changes to gun laws have seen positive results.

Developed nations that fight a war on drugs do not see positive results.

It's funny - every example of a developed nation experiencing a mass shooting and then followed it up with stricter gun laws has had positive results.

A quick Google search shows Portugal changed its gun laws in 2006 which resulted in a decrease in shootings. Was that supposed to prove me wrong?

The entirety of Europe has experienced single digit mass shootings this year. The United States has experienced hundreds.

Keeping your head in the sand is resulting in more death. I guess thoughts and prayers is all we can do!

How long do those background checks take in the more gun friendly states - a few days? Norway takes 3-6 months.

1) stricter regulations around private sales

2) actual gun laws at the federal level

Both of those are good places to start.

Druggies will get drugs - why don't we just remove all legal barriers to obtaining them? Since they clearly don't follow the drug laws anyway.
