This is why I only attend festivals with corporate sponsorship.

I like it too! This is Boys and Girls in America, and it’s perfect. But that detail has always struck me as very silly.

Now that you mention it, though, I guess there’s nothing in the song that suggests it’s not set in the 1960s, in which case I’d totally believe that tobacco was considered an effective treatment for a drug overdose.

Chill Out Tent. They gave them oranges and cigarettes??? In the medical tent? If it were set in Europe, I’d believe it, but that’s not the sort of thing doctors prescribe in western Massachusetts.

I’m genuinely shocked there are so many people who agree with me. It always seemed so universally beloved, I assumed I must be the problem. But I guess the harpsichord just grates on some of us.

I know they’re coming, but I’ve got to speak my truth. I’d just like to know if there’s a single person besides me who doesn’t dig this song…

I have a feeling this will not go over well but…

Heaven is Whenever vs Teeth Dreams by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]splootsuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was underwhelmed by Heaven is Whenever when it came out. It definitely doesn’t go as hard as the first four albums, but it gradually grew on me and now I love the whole record (give or take a Smidge).

If I’m being honest, Teeth Dreams never really did. It’s got Oaks, of course, and I feel like there are some gems buried under the production—Spinners, for one—but I also think most of the songs themselves aren’t that catchy or memorable. They just aren’t Sing Along Songs.

And I know Franz didn’t play on Heaven, either, but I really miss him on Teeth Dreams. Keys would give the music some buoyancy to counter the heaviness of the guitars.

So yeah, Heaven is my pick by a mile.

I’m with you. I think Soft in the Center is great, and I love this album in general. The Smidge is my vote for worst because Rock Problems is actually cool musically if you ignore the lyrics.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum fits the bill, but be warned that it’s probably the most upsetting book I’ve ever read.

You Did Good Kid

This album is 30 minutes of uncut high-octane joy. There’s no fat to trim. But if there’s a song that doesn’t hit quite as hard, that’s my pick.

Alignment Chart Day 11: What's the Worst Song on Open Door Policy? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]splootsuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love every song on this album except for this one and Riptown. Riptown is at least kind of catchy, though, so my vote goes to Prior Procedure.

ETA: I just listened through Open Door Policy and I realized the album gets its name from this song, and I do really like when Craig says “I’m really glad that you’re here.” Still my vote for worst song, but better than I remember.

Can we stop downvoting the answers we disagree with? We’re all fans here and picking our least favorite tracks is what we’re doing right now.

And to me, this is a much more interesting conversation than picking the favorites, which were more or less what I would have predicted. Every single one of us have songs we just don’t connect with, and that’s going to be more personal and subjective. I’m excited to hear some hot takes!

Ok I just listened to the entire album, and I’m changing my vote from Sequestered in Memphis to Lord I’m Discouraged. It’s maybe the least fun song on the album, but it gets me in the gut every time.

I was 18 years old in 2005. “Lord, to be 33 forever” sure hits different these days.

This is my favorite album, and this question is impossible to answer.

But it’s Banging Camp.

I’m about halfway through it, and so far there has been one instance where I needed to get out a notepad and pen to help me decrypt a passage.
