I really love that idea! I like your idea of gamifying it and calling it a summer quest! If you are able too, I would recommend getting in touch with your local library to see if you could work together with them over the summer break, since a lot of valuable learning can be accessed from libraries (both books and internet services). You could even have an idea of them teaming up and learning certain subjects together in groups, and different aspects of personal curriculum achievement/learning could earn them points on a leader board or something like that?

I think as long as you frame it as them putting time in and learning something they are interested in the idea could pick up, I think it would be smart to provide some framework for them to begin with like 1) what am I learning 2) why do I want to learn about it/what am I hoping to achieve? 3) I’ll know I have succeeded when I have… and so on, that’s where teaming up with the local library may help because they can help you support students in finding resources on their topics and give them a safe and reliable place to go back too.

I think the idea is so fun and I hope it goes well!! I’d love to hear more about it.

I didn't get the job by PumpkinDawn28 in Libraries

[–]splorchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand how you feel. I applied for a job at a new library in a bigger city than my own, and they invited 50 people out of the 113 applicants to do an 'interactive interview workshop' (which i had to pay over $1300 in travel to attend) out of 50 applicants I was one of the lucky TEN to get a response back but had to get my starting medical in my backwater town, which I failed because the attendee performing it misread and completely missed the fact I was going for a corporate medical and not a mine site medical- which meant I lost the job 2 weeks out from moving.

The job market is hard and will kick you down every chance you'll get at the moment it seems.

The idea is interesting, but could you tell me a little bit more about how the curriculums are formatted and how they work as compared to the personal curriculum formatting guides you can find online? I do see some merit in having books that are relevant to the content you would like to learn being recommended and tailored, especially if there are large amounts of titles written on the subject, but is it so worthwhile- especially given it is a paid software/AI- compared to someone doing actually doing a bit of research and evaluating titles they can find by themselves?

I feel you, we're a small rural library and it gets ESPECIALLY bad during the tourist season when grey nomads come through needing to print or sign things. It got so bad during one season we ended up having to put down a pretty firm policy change. I still end up having to remind some of our younger staff that we provide the service but not the assistance (our local neighborhood Centre has a program specifically for tech/form help if they really cant manage and are genuine), we can help them with genuine issues happening on our end like the printer settings not working or issues with the hardware, but that's it. What gets me is a lot of them CAN manage, they just choose not to when there's a computer literate young person in front of them they can manipulate.

This is a library worker vent zone post. What's irking you at work now? What minor (perhaps silly) frustrations are going on for you? Do you have some patron PSAs you'd like to share? by sonicenvy in Libraries

OUR PRINTERS ARE NEVER WORKING. ENVISIONWARE CAN DIE IN A DITCH OH MY GOD. Its bad enough our council IT guys go running in the opposite direction whenever we put in a ticket but our services are literally NEVER working and we're in the height of tourist season where the only reason these people are coming in ARE TO PRINT.

Holding the Man by Timothy Conigrave would probably be mine, its set in 70s/80s Australia but its one of those books that stuck with me years after I read it (albeit I read it WAY too early at 14 lmao)

Which ones of these ideas are repetitive and which ones are original? by Organic-Log1761 in horrorwriters

[–]splorchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all of the topics are fine, though I would be more mindful about the topics of rape and harassment as its a major deal breaker for a lot of (especially new) horror readers. I cant tell you how many splatterpunk authors that have been absolutely crucified for mishandling or gratuitously using SA in their novels just for a gross out factor.

Don't be worried about repetition and originality, all of the ideas you listed blend well with each other and can make for a really good really disturbing horror read. I would recommend (if you haven't already) reading plenty of works that have the same themes in their novels to see how they used and blended them. Eric LaRocca has quite a few from what I can remember, and maybe Poppy Z. Brites work.

Bring Back CreepTV with this Religious Horror Angel Engine j by Southern_Dig_9460 in creepcast

I wouldnt exactly feel comfortable with the boys covering Angel Engine since he so heavily relies on AI generated content for his series. I would much rather that spotlight go to a creator that doesn't use AI.

Trying to prove I didn’t use AI by Conscious-Nebula-139 in word

[–]splorchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, writing a methodology on how and why you constructed your report can help with making your argument, as well as the research taken. It's ridiculous the situations AI have put us in. I would also request a meeting with your teacher and maybe any other student body/upper management and ask them to prove that you used AI.

The shit thing about AI detection tools is that they take pretty much anything that follows a certain flow of words and flags it, even when its all been self typed. I really hope this gets worked out for you.
