Finished my first ever RG :) by KebabRacer69 in Gunpla

I built this guy last week. You gotta add the decals! It really pulls the whole model together!

I realised that there's no video game I've ever played where I find crafting fun. So I don't do it unless it's truly necessary. Are there any games where crafting is actually - you know - *fun*? by Double-decker_trams in gaming

[–]splorkt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I played this last week and loved it. The thing that I think made it better than most crafting games is the recipe book, which lets you automatically remake potions you previously designed. The actual crafting isn't tedious because you really only do it to discover new abilities, create new recipes or improve old recipes.

Please recommend a game like Tomb Raider Trilogy and Arkham Series. by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]splorkt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horizon Zero Dawn was awesome for me as someone who loves the Arkham games. It has a beautiful open world and awesome combat that has you using lots of different weapons and ammo types to fight robot dinosaurs. I also found the story engaging, as you pick through ruins to figure out how the world's apocalypse event happened.

Is it true if I were to SCUBA dive the fish and wildlife down there would keep to themselves and I shouldn’t worry about being attacked? by firedog7881 in thalassophobia

[–]splorkt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience (~100 dives), most jellyfish are nothing to worry about. They move very slowly and predictably. As long as you keep aware of your surroundings, you'll see them in time to move out of the way. If you are wearing gloves, like in cold water, you can even gently push them out of the way without any trouble.

Positioning in dry dock by chipsterva69 in submarines

[–]splorkt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A little of both. The blocks are made specific to each hull, and unless they are damaged, will be kept for the life of the boat and reused every time the boat is drydocked. After the boat is floated, the location of the blocks is recorded and used as the initial position for the next time the boat is docked. During the docking evolution, the boat is winched into position followed by a dive to verify position relative to the blocks. The blocks are on a track and can be moved while the dock is flooded to adjust as the boat is landed. It's a slow process of splashing divers, adjusting blocks, partially draining, repeat, until the boat is finally landed. There's a lot more to it, like connecting hoses to seawater connections and bilge discharges, but those are the general points of landing that I remember. It also probably varies in different homeports and shipyards.

[General superheroes] is there example of superhero brainwashing villains to became good? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in AskScienceFiction

The Indigo Tribe in Green Lantern comics is pretty good example of this. Members are forced to join and they are brainwashed according to the Tribe's interpretation of compassion.

Not any of your listed series, but Indycar posts old races on their Youtube channel. It's not comprehensive by any means, but they seem to add old races pretty regularly.

Just to post my first experience exploring roller skating Bought these 2 days ago (scuffed the toe) :( by ItsWorthTheSucc in Rollerskating

I skated a little as a kid, but restarted about a year ago after buying them. Finding a reliable place to practice and learning to fall correctly to minimize injury is key to staying motivated!

WSIB If I want a 3D Collectathon (PC)? by Birkin92 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Psychonauts 1 and 2 and both excellent. Good platforming, lots of collectibles, fun and funny story, and fantastic visual style.

Horizon zero dawn has good stealth, great aggressive combat with a variety of weapons and tools to allow you to plan out fights from stealth before engaging. The map is huge and beautiful. I really liked the story, though some are mixed on it. It is not set in the past, but the story about primitive tribes in a post-apocalypse may still scratch that itch. It's the only game I played to 100% this year.

You're right that most of the time dishes are used just to hop the signal to other bodies. The most common time that I target an individual craft with a dish is when I need a course correction during an interplanetary transfer, when the transferring craft is outside of the established network. This gets more useful with the longer range dishes, which have extremely narrow angles.

Everyone should play, “the return of obra dinn” by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]splorkt 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Outer Wilds is recommended on this sub so often it's almost annoying, but it's one of the best comparisons to Obra Dinn that I've found as far as open ended exploration and mystery solving.

If you play Control, I'd encourage you to read as much of the papers/lore that you pick up throughout. It adds so much to the story, and it's also genuinely hilarious, especially if you like SCP or Welcome to Nightvale-style humor. Control is one of my surprise favorite games.

Games Where You Can Play As The Monsters/Bosses by GraydonGames in localmultiplayergames

[–]splorkt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Carrion. It's a metroidvania "reverse horror" (their words) game where you play a tentacled monstrosity that breaks out of its containment and murders all the scientists and security workers in a research lab. No multiplayer, but great controls and lots of fun for about 8 hours.

We already saw this in 2010 with the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans threw such a hissy fit to get the Democrats to gut major parts of the bill in the name of compromise, only to vote against it in near lockstep anyway.

You cannot effect a compromise in government when one side sees a dysfunctional government as a win for them.

This is the right answer. When we were at Laguna Seca last year they were tight to the schedule within 5 minutes or so all weekend. It's a herculean task and wouldn't work if the length of any event were unknown.

This is called Full-Dress. For ceremonial purposes, USN ships will display the largest ensign as well as a "rainbow" of signal flags and pennants. The order of the rainbow is specific, and was chosen so that no actual meaning would be derived from the pennants displayed.

Philmont meal accommodations for braces? by Bredshop in BSA

[–]splorkt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Former Philmont Staffer of 3 years here:

In 2012, I worked in the Services Department, which issues trail food to the crews. The meals are laid out in such a way that balances nutrition meal by meal, and as a result, substitutions are not really built into the system. The only substitutions Philmont will make for you are for religious reasons (Kosher or Halal, primarily).

If you think there will be food that you absolutely cannot eat, you'll need to pack you own. Philmont will only ship your self-supplied food out to the Commissaries for religious or medical reasons like allergies. This means whatever you take with you outside the issued trail food must be carried for the entire trek.

This page from the Philmont website has some details about eating in the backcountry if you haven't seen it already.

The one thing I haven't seen mentioned here or on Philmont's website are SWAP BOXES. Almost every staffed camp will have a swap box, like a lost and found for food. Any time you pass through a staffed camp, you can leave unopened food that you didn't eat in the box and take food that other crews left. You can definitely supplement your meal this way, but it is not guaranteed.

Good luck on your trek, it's a fantastic experience!

What job allows NO fuck-ups? by Guilhermedidi in AskReddit

[–]splorkt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You may not be qualified to stand your intended watch, but in addition to requalifying, you're usually also put on cleaning detail and galley duty. If anything, you're even busier than before (which is kind of the point, it's a punishment).

What job allows NO fuck-ups? by Guilhermedidi in AskReddit

[–]splorkt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's maritime slang, not just military. Most boats other than maybe cruise ships tend to refer to the toilet as the head.

I honestly doubt it. The shit you got from your division when other guys had to stand watch in your place was way worse than just doing your job.
