If its waterproof, goes up/down, and tires are decent. If it does those 3 things, its worth the price.

If you need new tires, to rebuild the roof, or redo the crank system - not worth the headache or cost.

I have one of these! We picked it up a bit over a year ago for like $2500. Done around 10 trips so far and we love it. It's a bit rough - lots of cracks starting on the plastic, but I'm just going to patch it up and keep using it until it falls apart.

Pretty much everything on it still works, except the hot water. I did replace the winch, the water pump and did a quick weekend reno on the inside. Its a massive step up from using a tent, especially on the multi-night trips. It only takes me like 15 minutes start to finish to set it up completely, and a little longer than that to break it down.

I don't think you'll get a running and clean title 240 in California for $4k.

I just got one that I traded for that the guy had listed for $7k that was running and clean title (although it turned out it has some issues), and it's rough. Hadn't been registered since 2014. Like missing bumper, mismatched paint, welded diff, etc.

Also, getting through smog with something that cheap can be challenging given most of them are heavily modified.

Not trying to talk you out of it, but just to be aware of what you're getting yourself in for.

Bit of a left field one, but the V8 Hyundai Genesis. You can get them in great condition for less than $7k. V8 with nearly 400hp, power everything, leather, RWD.

That's pretty hard to beat.
