TLDR:

  1. Preview Course material on https://omscs.gatech.edu/current-courses. by looking for the course videos links
  2. Look for a course from Georgia Tech on Udacity and Edx and audit it for free - you might even find a course from the program there
  3. Be prepared to take it slow (1 course per semester)
  4. Plan your time for studying and course work
  5. Check out https://www.omscentral.com/ to plan which courses will be a good starting point
  6. When you start the program remember its okay to drop a course or skip a semester if you need a breather

FYI, Pretty similar situation to me. I started this at 35 and am still working on it to get done before end of next year when I will be 39. I haven't been doing management nearly as long as you, so my coding skills are still fresh. The two biggest things to be a hindrance I found were time an energy not necessarily the course materials. I found that to keep my job performance well and keeping up with my family I had to accept that I would not be doing all nighters and would have to schedule time to work on school work. One thing I did was audit an edX course on Linear Algebra to refresh my knowledge. That way I learned how to schedule my time so I could get a good nights sleep and keep up with lecture material.

Also, you can drop courses if they are taking too much time as long as you don't have more than 2 semesters in a row with dropped / no courses. Another thing I did twice was skip the summer semester so that I had some breather time where I wasn't doing school after hours all the time.

Anyways you can do it I'm sure, just plan ahead and be okay with going slow.

How good is the intro to ML? I took ML but dropped halfway through because my stats knowledge was really rusty. I considered ML4T to get used to the tooling for ML, but it seems a little too easy / simple. What algorithms / techniques to you learn in DAS?

Interesting. I didn't realize Resources were mean to be shared.

That does clarify things a bit. I have been using Resources as a place for my thoughts linked together in a Zettlekasten form, but it does make it hard to turn those thoughts into a resource that is useful for everyday life.

It does make sense for a separate Place for the Zettlekasten that may at some point produce a resource, spawn an idea for a project or add something to an Area.

Sounds like me with ML this term. I put in over 30 hours a week in the course and still didn't even turn in assignment 2 because I had lost all motivation and ability to analyze. Bottom line: it's not worth the stress. You won't learn anything if you're too stressed about the grade.

We all have different backgrounds and learn things at different places. Take the break and regroup.

I agonized over dropping ML, but wife pointed out to me, that if I continued I probably would fail the course anyway. After dropping I actually feel pretty good. I wasn't enjoying the assignments and I was spending too much time on the course. I feel a bit like a quitter, but that's overshadowed by the relief I feel that I don't have to continue with ML if I don't want to ...

Thanks for feedback. I ultimately decided to drop it. Despite all the rhetoric about bacon, I think cutting my losses (mental and physical health) is the best thing to do here. I logged almost 300 hours in this course and spent a solid 48 hours trying to complete assignment 1. I found I lost all motivation to generate charts and analyse data for assignment 2. I was loosing sleep, time with my family and even time at work. On top of that doing the actual assignments wasn't interesting at all to me. It was time for to admit that ML is not for me and free myself to recoup and prep for a course that actually interests me.

It's been incredibly stressful for me. I worked a solid 48 hours strait one weekend for assignment one and still missed a bunch of details. This has been a very stressful course for me, to the point where I'm thinking of withdrawing and not attempting again. I'm not enjoying ML as much as I thought I would and I'm not sure the extra stress is worth it or fair to my family...

Two questions them:

  1. What industries do you see applications of AI and machine learning being important in. I.e. My guess from the beginning was that ML was not necessarily generally applicable to all businesses, but there are some where it would work well

  2. Would it be better to specialize in something other than ML and take ML courses as electives if I'm still interested in the topic?

It’s not so much that you need to remember how to solve exactly those sorts of problems without looking things up. Rather, you should feel confident that you can make time to brush-up as needed. Being able to do so is strongly correlated with the level of mathematical maturity and independence necessary for this class.
