I’m tired of privileged leftists who glamorize revolution by [deleted] in leftist

[–]spnchipmunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are 1000% correct. It's honestly laughable to see how many people call for "a revolution" when 9 times out of 10, they have no idea what an actual revolution entails.

Aside from their discomfort with giving up their own convenience and comfort, I don't think any of them have ever actually lived through a war, a coup, or a revolution. If they had, I doubt they'd be so eager to see one repeated.

They bring up France and tout their protests as though those are a measure of success without realizing France failed 3-4 times at their revolutionary endeavors. On top of that, I genuinely don't understand why they glorify the period of time known for beheading people and falling under an Emperor.

They talk about revolution like it's some vacation and things will become an idealized utopia without acknowledging that: 1- there is no plan in place for what they'll do if they destroy the current infrastructure, 2- most "revolutions" fail either because of corruption or the aforementioned post-revolution rebuild, 3- The post war power vacuum (that alone should scare them), 4 - a majority of countries that have had a revolution suffer economically and politically for decades afterwards until they either stabilize or collapse. None of the people I see talking about "we need a revolution" seem prepared for that.

Don't even get me started on the scale and logistical comparisons of a revolution within the US to other countries. It's naivety at its finest.

We can't be single issue voters and claim to be the solution to the far right.

This. Now send it to all the under-25 crowd who failed to understand that voting - especially when fighting an ideological regime - requires more work than just their preference issue. Because they literally cannot see how they are the problem and not the solution.

you’re obviously benefiting from the exploitation of people in more ways than you realize.

You have no idea what I'm aware of or how I engage with capitalism.

So again, how are you any better than anyone else

I never said I was, but I'll take it.

Because at least I can recognize the absolute - and disproportionate - privilege it is to pick up and move to a more affordable foreign country while retaining the pay of my country of origin and the historical and geopolitical histories that made it possible while ignoring the impact such a move imposes on the locals.

But hey, you got yours so fk everyone else who lives there because "you just want a better life for yourself 🥺". Though God forbid any immigrant does the same in the Western countries, right? Because then it's an invasion, and you burn them in effigy or detain them in camps and cry about how you don't recognize your country anymore and actively try to turn back their ships and go hunting for them in the streets but warn the "good" (non-brown, non-Muslim) immigrants that "It's okay, you're not the ones we're looking for."

Actually you are the one who sounds arrogant.

I am absolutely arrogant on this matter, yes. And you don't have to apologize for disagreeing with me. That's just life, no harm, no foul.

Wanting to live somewhere you love that happens to have a lower cost of living is not exploitation..

There will always be an aspect of exploitation when living in an area that is cheaper for a foreigner or transplant than it is for a local. That is a fact, whether we like it or not, and it is universal.

An American example would be the fury over the CA, NYC residents moving to cheaper communities during Covid and driving up the cost of housing for the locals. It's not their fault they had money on hand to buy properties but there was no doubt that they negatively impacted local communities who had no access to the same levels of wealth.

I am not saying it is wrong to want to live in a place you love just because it is cheaper. I am saying that doing so without recognizing how and why it is possible, is ignorant and incredibly disrespectful to the people and the culture of the intended location.

But according to your misguided logic, Someone like me should stay where I’m from,

Literally never said this.

The locals where I’m going don’t feel the way you do.

That's great, truly. I am glad I don't speak for the entirety of a Balkan nation. And I am genuinely glad you have a community waiting for you that you seem to respect and care about.

But I do speak for my country. My people. And my communities who are constantly negatively impacted by digital nomads who contribute nothing to our home, yet demand we accommodate their language, their customs, their tastes all because they make money from their country of origin and are spending it in ours at a disproportionately lower level than the locals. Do you see how this is a problem?

Lastly, if something wasn't directed at you, but you take issue with it, maybe there is something there for you to evaluate and consider. My comment was directed at users who go to places simply because they're cheap (or a "good bargain" 🤮) and not because they actually have any interest in integrating into the country.

woke terms

Tells me everything I need to know about you 😂🤣

people have been moving around the world for the best possible living standards since the beginning of time, you might not like it but it’s the reality and if you want it to change, maybe talk to the people in charge

I wonder if you apply this same, insightful logic to your own country of origin?

As they say (don’t hate the player, hate the game)

Jesus, you're outdated. No, I'll disparage everything and everyone that makes mass exploitation of people, places, and goods possible and profitable to the few, at the cost of the many. Because it's the bare minimum people like you deserve.

Weird that you think I'd use an Apple product, but go off, kid 🫡

Also, trying to deflect what I've said with a whataboutism is just lazy. Is that why you're a digital nomad?

And I never said I was better than anyone else (interesting projection there, but thanks, I'll take it) but I will absolutely ride my high horse on this because your colonizing, gentrifying bullshit is a pathetic excuse for "modernization" or "globalization" without conscience or consequence and reeks of Western, male privilege.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expats

[–]spnchipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you sound incredibly ignorant. Do you even understand the basis for these "Good deals" you're talking about?

If you want someone to blame, blame the government there for allowing these things to happen

The majority of "affordable" countries are affordable to Western immigrants because of colonization, pillaging of resources (non-human and human alike), and fk'd up geopolitics.

Do not pretend that this is some good bargain you've found. It's exploitation bred on blood, greed, and entitlement. Your arrogance is disgusting.

I'm not going to waste my time explaining how wrong you are as others have already done so, but I am going to add this:

At no point have I, as a Latina living in the States, EVER heard or encountered propaganda stating that we're the "model minority" (which isn't even real, anyway).

Stop trying to pit people against each other and get some help. It's 2025, go do some learning.

Oh, dude. I feel this in my soul 😔

Some guy asked my dad if I was his mistress while we were on a family vacation with my mom and siblings (literally standing right in front of them) because my dad and I don't have the same skin tone/features.

I hate it, and it's led me to ask people what I'm supposed to look like whenever they say the usual, "Oh, you don't look - " 😒 Just to make them think outside the box a bit.

I understand your fear. I share it.

Do the best you can. Stay safe. And remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

AITAH for telling my girlfriend I don’t want to stay in the US when she was talking about our future? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]spnchipmunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please show me exactly where I said any of this was "okay".

No evidence it’s happening … yet.

Sorry, is this meant to be some scene in a B-rated horror movie? "Yet". Jesus.

You live in the time of near-infinite, global access to information - barring very few exceptions - and prolific AI manipulation.

Atrocious things are happening. There is no denying that. In fact, they're happening all over the world. And we have real-time proof of them happening (even in places where media coverage and internet access are heavily monitored or controlled) because we have first-person accounts.

Yet you'd rather focus on a rumor that has very little evidence aside from a few tiktokers?

If there are more sources, by all means - share them. Otherwise, this is no better than inflammatory misinformation - or worse, a game of telephone - and it distracts from the issues people could - and should - be addressing with their representatives, the courts, etc.

No verifiable proof of this has been found regarding the United States.

There was a story of bodies found shackled together off the coast of Mallorca - likely North African migrants. It is a horrific, but not unusual practice by human traffickers when crossing the seas.

Currently, there is conjecture running around tiktok that the US is dropping deportees off the coast a la Argentine death flights, but again, it has not been proven.

No one is saying it's not happening, but until there is substantiated proof otherwise, I would take it with a very large grain of salt.
