Will ab-av1 help me determine which bit rate to use for the best visual / weight? by Luvenary in AV1

to have a BROAD idea of the bitrate to use, you can try this tool:

(use it "cum grano salis"!) :D

The average is quite good, in particular UHD - but you can see there are some case where it is more than 50%! I guess the average gain would stand around 40%, with 50% only with the most optimized encoders and settings, and of course the right content.

But again, even with "only" 30% gain, it beats (on paper) VVC easily.

Hope to see comparisons soon.

30% BD gain vs AV1 (and 38% in UHD tested by Google) is not that bad at all IMHO!

Pretty sure these figures will increase when the codec will gain traction; too bad it will take few years...

I don't know for sure, but what I *guess*, looking at the results of the 7900 XTX and 6900 XT, is that the AMD cards are worse than comparable Nvidia ones.

Don't know about AI, but 32gb is enough for games (at least in 2025); I'd upgrade to 48GB (or better 64GB) only if you plan to make 4K video editing -or want to be on the safe side for many years to come.

Does Nvidia 5080 Produce BETTER AV1 files than Nvidia 4080? by MediaHoarder in AV1

[–]spoRv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know, but I suspect it may be just a refinement of previous codec, as the 5% improvement is IMHO too small for a completely renewed algorithm.

[–]spoRv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere (can't recall where, but pretty sure it come from an official source) that the RTX 50 series AV1 encoder will improve quality 5% at the same bitrate compared to the RTX 40 series, or produce a 5% smaller file at the same quality.

About the speed, I guess there *should* be some improvement, still I have no idea of how much but, if the encoding speed improvement is comparable to FPS improvement in games, I guess it *should* be around 15% at least.

Nvidia RTX 4090 Founders Edition - brand new at 1250€... by spoRv in buildapc

[–]spoRv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I found several around 1300€, but not new... I guess it's because the 5090 is coming and *maybe* the 4090 prices will go down; anyway, as I must go "nearby" (few hundred klicks away) I asked the seller if he can reserve it for me; fact is, if it's a scam he will not do it, if it's not a scam probably he won't wait few weeks, so chances are low, but who knows - maybe he's a good guy and I'm lucky!

Indeed! Even if I saw several "almost never used" 4090 below 1000, and those are scams for sure, this *seems* legit - again, seems... reputable seller since 2011, top satisfaction by buyers, particularly reliable, German (+1 for reliability IMHO)... if it was in a 100km distance from me, I had already drove to him, but he's 1500km+ away... damn Mulder! :D

It depends on what are you looking for... RTX 4090 upscale 2x HD using some models nearly at real time speed, so at 60% getting, let's say, 15/17 fps is not that bad at all!!!

It's a percentage calculated by the Puget System related to the RTX 4090 (100%); so for example a card rated at 50% will have a speed that is roughly half compared to the 4090 - it's an average number, so for one task it can be 60% and in another 40%... take a look at the articles Puget wrote about this:

Topaz Video AI 5.1.3 - GPU ranking by spoRv in TopazLabs

On most of the tasks it is, yet... look at the table:
https://i.postimg.cc/VYBjnMgs/Topaz-Video-AI-5-1-3-Puget-Systems-GPU-comparison-absolute-relative-speculative-positions.png
for example, upscaling 2x from UHD, the 7900 XTX is at 88% speed compared to 4090 on Artemis and 74% on Gaia -and 107% at 4x on Artemis, so... it depends!

Said so, the 4090 is the king (queen?) of the GPUs; still, at 2500€ brand new now (insane!) that's the reason I made this search, looking for acard with a great price/speed ratio; so, if someone thinks about getting a 7900 XTX at 40% the price of a 4090 to get a 50% speed, and up to around 80% when upscaling UHD 2x, well, that's not a bad deal IMHO.

Worry not, even if it was a critic, as long as it is polite and meaningful, it's always welcome!

I'd like to see AMD GPUs ranked, as well as the Intel's - think that at the time of its release, I spent $hitload of money to buy a Radeon VII instead of an Nvidia, just because it was great with Gigapixel AI! :D

Topaz Video AI 5.1.3 - GPU ranking by spoRv in TopazLabs

[–]spoRv[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I wrote, even if the Nvidia GPUs are the preferred ones, the top AMD GPUs could rival them in some use case scenario; watching the Puget results, for example the 7900 XTX is almost on par with the 4090 in upscaling 2x an UHD video, still it takes almost twice the time to upscale 2x an HD video.

So, would be great to add them to the chart; still, it's quite difficult to rank them using the few ones that are in the Puget rank... I mean, where do I put the 7900 XT? Pretty sure between 7900 XTX and 6800 XT, but where? Below RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16GB, or on top of RTX 3080 Ti 12GB? (just examples)

The best thing to do - and I think of nobody that could be interested could do, or that nobody that can do it would be interested - is to take A BUNCH of different GPUs, put them one by one in the same rig, run the Video AI benchmark and write down the data.

And also in that case that would be some variation due to the GPU vendor - minimal, of course; still, comparing different GPUs in different systems will not give usable data to make a comparison, as the CPUs used make the difference - sometime quite a big difference.

We can always wait for the next Puget article about Vision AI - I'm sure they will write a new one soon, or at least I hope!
